Seth Posted August 11, 2013 Report Posted August 11, 2013 So when flying up to Martha's Vineyard today from Washington DC ahead of the President, the New York airspace was very congested. I was flying IFR on V1 between DIXIE and JFK. NY APR: Mooney N1165N, NY APR, what is your airspeed? 65N: Indicated or true? 65N (160 indicated, 180 true) NY APR: It doesn't matter, please slow down by 10 knots for spacing. So, I slowed down, they transferred me to the next controller and when I asked them if I could speed up, they didn't know about the speed restriction, but I was still gaining on the aircraft ahead of me so them bumped me up to 8000 and removed any speed restriction.. It was a great flight - first time recently I've been told to slow down -Seth 4 Quote
bnicolette Posted August 11, 2013 Report Posted August 11, 2013 That is a great feeling Seth. Fast machine you got there! ATC wants indicated in knots if available. Above FL290 they want mach # unless specifically asked for knots. Quote
HopePilot Posted August 11, 2013 Report Posted August 11, 2013 Today, I was told I was 60 knots faster than the traffic at my 12 o'clock and it was suggested that I should climb for that and other traffic issues I was having/creating. Quote
sreid Posted August 11, 2013 Report Posted August 11, 2013 Seth, that is an x-rated post title and I am ashamed of it. Steve 2 Quote
Seth Posted August 11, 2013 Author Report Posted August 11, 2013 Thank you Brett - I thought it might be indicated but I wasn't sure. Steve - I hope you're joking - I usually joke around like that but in this case didn't even realize until you pointed it out!! -Seth Quote

For that matter, some pilots I know don't know the difference :-( Quote

DrBill Posted August 11, 2013 Report Posted August 11, 2013 What was your flight plan filled speed ? Were you close to the speed you filed ? Just curious.. perhaps they had some slow traffic at your altitude or the plan was screwed up somewhere. BILL Quote

The plane ahead of me was going 145 indicates. They popped me up to 8000 and then had me climb to 9000 about 15 minutes later. It was VERY busy around JFK on Saturday. Quote
