I realize this question will sound like a novice but does anyone know the part number for a Champion or Tempest oil filter for an A3B6?  I do my own oil changes and had a couple of CH48103's filters in the hangar.  Got busy for my first oil change after changing to the A3B6 engine and had a nearby A&P change my oil for the first change.  He noted that he had to put a different filter on it and that I could no longer use the CH48103s.  However when checking Champion and Tempest fitment there is no mention of the A3B6 oil filter.

Thanks

Tempest AA48110-2 filter or equivalent. I think the A1B6 engine is the same filter, the only difference is the prop flange bushings and prop clocking.

I just checked Champions data sheet and it appears that they call for ch48103-1 for the J 201 Mooney. I also checked the specs on the this filter and the one you stated 48110-1. It appears that the 48110-1 is shorter and the thread (sae) is 3/4 instead of 13/16. The shorter sounds good but the thread needs to be right. Are you sure that the 48110-1 is correct. I just ordered a filter from Chief Aircraft and they told me I needed the 48103 filter. I'm glad this post came up and want to be sure what filter to install.

I change my oil and filter regularly and use the 48110-1 from Champion and 48110-2 from Tempest on my A3B6. I'm a little surprised and confused by references to a 48103 filte, particularly if the threads are different.. I'll be interested in seeing comments.

the J can have 2 type of engines ( i am not talking about rocket conversions, STC'd, etc...):

io-A3B6D

io-A3B6

both by Lycoming.

i believe the first one is the most common

the 2 engines can have different accessories. (refer to the Lycoming parts catalog)

the filter for the D engine is Lycoming part number 54D19627 (sold in the aftermarket as 48103)

the filter for the A3B6 engine (non-D) is Lycoming part number 54D19625 ( sold in the after market as 48110)

I just checked Tempest filters and found the only differences are the thread length. the 48103 filter appears to be 13/16 long with 16 threads and the 48110 filter has a thread length of 3/4 inch with 16 threads. Guess this means that the 48110 is a bit shorter (1/16) inch. Would 1/16 make any difference on thread length on the new io360a3b6 engine?

We figured it out pretty quick once we tried to bolt the A3B6D filter we already had to the A3B6.  The filter and the case both had studs protruding from them. I couldnt find a nut to join them.

FWIW our factory engine came with the 48110 filter installed, and the best way to develop a new idea is to copy someone else.

Checked again on champions data page and seeing their pictures. looking at the picture of both filters shows the 103 filter not having external threads and the 110 filter having them external. Crazy that they would change this from female threads to male. I'm going to order a 48110 filter.

right on. nothing wrong with remove and replace with exact same.

all pieces and parts on a certified aircraft should have a part number on them.

Thought I would pass along some info on good prices for the Tempest 48110-2 oil filter (for the IO360-A3B6 engine). I ordered a set of 6 filters for $105 that includes S/H from qaa.com (Florida).

I believe it is the diameter of the nipple sticking out from the filter.  3/4" diameter and 16 threads per inch (TPI) or 13/16" diameter and 16 TPI

Oil filter biology lesson:

48110 and 48111 filters have a male stud and thread, meant to screw into the oil filter adapter on O-360, IO360 A1A, A3B6. Engine with two sepperate magnetos. There are still a few of these engine flying with the old OF712 stud used when AC made filters, in this case it took a 48103 or 48104 filter out removal of the stud.

48103, 48104 filters have a female threaded hole meant to screw onto adapter stud on IO 360A1B6D and A3B6D. Engines with Dual drive magnetos.

48108 and 48109 have female threaded hole meant to screw onto adapter stud on IO 550, TSIO 360, TSIO 520, TSIO 550. Engines made TCM.

48110, 48103 and 48108 are shorter filters, others are longer filters.
