Lood Posted March 5, 2013 Report Posted March 5, 2013 Changing the starter is indeed quite a PIA, but nowhere 8 hours worth of pain. Quote
Will.iam Posted April 21 Report Posted April 21 Aaaah I’m snake bite! Just replaced my starter with a remanufactured stater and did not get 4 starts before it quit!!! Tried banging on the starter and that didn’t work but when an A&P verified starter was getting 25 volts at the terminal, he had me put the ignition to start and while i held it there he banged on the starter and started working! Had no idea that was an option so if you can find someone to hold the ignition to start while you tap on the stater you can maybe get another start out of it. We put the top cowl back on and crossed our fingers and it started up. I flew it directly back to the shop and when i shut it down tried to start the engine and it was already back at the dead spot. Of course still under warranty but not labor which i think for an item that lasted less than a week and 4 starts labor should be covered. Here is the data plate for a data point on starters. Quote
Will.iam Posted April 21 Report Posted April 21 Can’t get a photo to upload but the dataplate is: Aerotec Prestolite MHJ-4003 24 volts. 1 Quote
Brent Posted April 26 Report Posted April 26 I recently replaced a SkyTec starter with a new 149NL. The prior starter went 14 years and 970 hours. The unit was still cranking when I removed it, but it was starting to move at the mounting plate. Quote
M20F-1968 Posted April 27 Report Posted April 27 I have a almost new Sky-Tec Aircraft Lightweight Starter Model 149-12LS Sky-Tec light weight starter which is like new. I replaced my original starter with this new on. It was on the airplane no more that about 20 hours when I built a new baffling which needed an inline starter - airbox and air filter which required an in line starter due to lack of space for the solenoid position on this starter. Please see the Aircraft Spruce page for this starter with specifications and new pricing. The starter sells currently ar Aircraft Spruce for $1145.00.
