kris_adams Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 Hi Everyone, My son and I are planning to head out next week (7/11 or 12) flying from Atlanta to Las Vegas. We have a lot of ideas around the Grand Canyon/Vegas/Winslow/Page area but we are struggling to find much to see between AR and Alb. Anyone know of places to overnight or even fly in for lunch on this route? We may overnight in Amarillo. Thanks again for the suggestions. Kris Quote
Joe Zuffoletto Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 About the only place I would stop between AR and ABQ is Austin, TX. A little out of the way but much more interesting than Amarillo! Quote
smccray Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 Plenty of choices in TX. For lunch, Hard8 BBQ is just off the field at KSEP (just west of DFW). There's a restaurant on the field at KRBD that's pretty good- I'll buy you guys lunch if you come in here. There's self serve fuel on the field, or ambassador has great service (my landlord and preference). Cheap fuel and a good FBO in Borger, TX. 2 or 3 crew cars and some decent hotels in town, but not much night life. Don't know if they let you keep the cars overnight, but a quick call will take care of that. Quote
rob Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 Depending on your schedule and such, Oklahoma City is a good stop. The national Memorial is a must see, and all of bricktown is very nice. If I were you, I'd consider overnight there as opposed to Amarillo. Ponca City, OK, a little out of the way, has a Mexican place that's among the best I've ever had, and it's on the field. Other than that, not much around. I flew from Memphis to Santa Fe last year, We stopped for fuel and lunch somewhere unremarkable based on fuel prices, but didn't find anything else worth lowering the gear Quote
kris_adams Posted July 2, 2012 Author Report Posted July 2, 2012 Thanks again for the suggestions. It was tough to find a place on this route since I'm so unfamiliar with the area. Kris Quote
rbridges Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 that sounds awesome. Let me know how it goes. Who knows, maybe I can talk my wife into a west coast trip someday. Quote
Hank Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 Good stops depend on how far you want to depart from the straight line path. You could visit the Hangar Hotel in Fredericksburg, TX; or you could stop in I-forget-where, MO for some throwed rolls. [No, the rolls are not THROWN to your dinner table, they are "THROWED" to you. Hope you and your son can catch!] The people are very friendly, but table service was incredibly slow, in Columbus, NE, on my stopover there. Other than that, I can't contribute much on that part of the country. Of course, Yellowstone/Glacier/Grand Tetons are waiting off to the north, too. Quote
moodychief Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 If you aren't intimidated by a 2600 foot grass strip you should consider spending the night at Beaumont, KS. After landing, you taxi on a county road a couple hundred yards to Main Street. Be sure to stop at the stop sign before parking next to the oldest wooden water tower. http://beaumonthotelks.com/ Quote
jetdriven Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 As my wife says, they are "Flyover states". They only have worth because the hold the east coast teabaggers and west coast liberals apart. Otherwise, no redeeming quality. Nonsense, says I. Where else can you see 15 Cadillacs buried tails up, in the ground or the world's largest ball of twine, or foil? Corn 6 feet high? Minuteman missle silos? eh? eh? That's what I thougt. Quote
Hank Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 Anybody have a copy of "Roadside America" handy??? Quote

Guest Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 THANK YOU VERY MUCH FANTOM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very well put and happy 4th to you. Quote
Hank Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 One last thing to remember, Kris. Atlanta to Vegas is a two-way trip--there's no need to fly the same route both directions. Mix it up, go different places coming home, see more of the country. Above all, have fun! Quote
