My Mooney M20K has about 1050 lbs useful, flies 190 knots at cannula pressure altitudes (FL180 and below).


So my plane could easily do your mission (3 total people) with about 55 gallons onboard.


If you're trying to do this with 4 people, I recommend a Cessna 206, Cessna 210, or Beech A36.

The three passengers include myself, the 100lb box is just a senario for extra weight that passengers may want to bring with them. I was thinking 30 lbs each with 10 lbs left over.

Parker- Does 794 NM max range in your A/C make sense to you considering the OP req's for fuel reserves? If we take 1050 less 700 lbs of payload that gives a max fuel load of 350 lbs. My POH uses 5.82 lbs/gal but many use 6 lbs/gal. Therefore 350/5.82 ='s 60.1 gals max. fuel load less 9.1 gals (45 min reserve at 12.2 GPH) or 51 gals. useable plus reserves. Divide 51 gals by the fuel burn at altitude of 12.2 gph gives 4.18 hours endurance. At 190 knots that would seem to provide a no wind range of 794 NM. That range would be further reduced by the higher gph fuel burn in time to climb. That range still provides adequate fuel for the revised mission of one fuel stop.

My J with that loading could do about 750 NM with a VFR reserve.  I've done 900 NM solo and had 15 gallons left (out of 64) with just a little help from tailwinds.


I don't think any Mooney will do that mission non-stop without LR tanks and busting the gross weight limitations.  Going 1000 NM non-stop *should* require some urinary relief if everyone is staying hydrated like they should (especially the pilot!).  In a Mooney, this is a delicate operation, and I've never done it with pax on board, nor would I like to unless it was simply unbearable.  That is something else to keep in mind if you plan to spend 5-7 hours in a plane at a stretch.  With that in mind, splitting the trip into a pair of 400-600 NM legs makes some practical sense.  :)

None...your closest bet with 2-3 passengers is a Bravo with Monroy Tanks. Nothing stock.


Get a B-55.....or an A36 with tip tanks. They are old, but a Twin Commanche with tips might work too.

Leaves a few extra gallons in the tank


Cris's Eagle has more power and scimitar type prop with the screamin upgrade.

I fly regularily 1000nm with two people non stop so doing it with three people and a stop is no problem with just about any Mooney. Winds will be an issue (going West may be harder) but it should still be doable. Trick to range is being able to run LOP properly (don't want to start something here but it does make a large difference).
