RoundTwo Posted March 3, 2024 Report Posted March 3, 2024 Is there a preload torque for the nosegear? The only thing I can find in the service manual is based on spring compression. Maybe the nose gear tool I have is for pre-J models. Quote

Huh, mine is an F, but the preload tool is only for checking the mains. The nose is a spring measurement. 1 Quote
Guest Posted March 4, 2024 Report Posted March 4, 2024 There is a nose preload tool. There is not a spec for my j, but I have been advised by some knowledgeable Mooney folks that you should strive to have it about 125 in/lbs. The man I spoke with told me that he had seen Mooneys with the nose gear set per the mx manual (reference spring compression) and not having adequate preload. I got mine from Knr tools. The owner is great. He has a lot of helpful information. Quote
EricJ Posted March 4, 2024 Report Posted March 4, 2024 The nosegear preload tool doesn't apply to J models. Instead there is a spring compression measurement that accomplishes the same task. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted March 4, 2024 Report Posted March 4, 2024 If you set the spring compressions correctly, the nose gear preload will be within the old specs. The nose gear rods should be set as even as you can get them. You want the springs to just not completely compress when they go through maximum compression, which is just short of over-center. That is what the procedure in the manual is trying to achieve, but most people don’t get it, so they tried to make a simpler procedure. 3 Quote
