I've only done it a few times, but the times I have saved some big diversions when I could go up and over vs around. And going into Canada, though I doubt it would matter. But if something happens and everyone starts checking all their little Gov and Insurance boxes, I don't want someone to tell me I'm not covered because of a technicality.
pkellercfii Posted November 1, 2023 Report Posted November 1, 2023 Last I heard, which was at least three years ago, from my AME at the time, Canada is not accepting basic med. That’s not a point I’d take any chances on if I were going to fly into Canada. I’m still maintaining my FAA 3rd class for occasional climbs into the flight levels, and, possibly, future international travel. —Paul Keller
cliffy Posted November 3, 2023 Report Posted November 3, 2023 Like I said- IF you can handle the limitations Basic Med is the way to go - especially if you have an SI To each their own however.
Pinecone Posted November 3, 2023 Report Posted November 3, 2023 If they would raise the altitude limit to FL240 for Basic Med, I would be a happier camper. But I can live with it. I understand that Canada is waiting for ICAO acceptance of Basic Med. It will make the reg change much easier for them.
0TreeLemur Posted November 11, 2023 Report Posted November 11, 2023 My Class III medical expires at the end of this month. Yesterday I had my BasicMed physical appointment with my Dr. It turns out that he was surprised that he could do that and had never done one. Just before I left for the appointment I read up on how to educate M.D.'s just in case. Glad I did. He was up to speed very quickly and the whole thing took me maybe 10 minutes after the waiting room. Yay! No more certified letters to the FAA for my SI. 3
DCarlton Posted November 11, 2023 Report Posted November 11, 2023 I completed Basic Med this past week too for the first time with my GP who knows me fairly well. He had reviewed the AOPA introductory packet I left him months ago and was pleased to do the physical. I'm a believer in the process now. It was a more comprehensive and productive use of time than I've previously experienced with an AME. To facilitate the process, I took him recent eye exam results. https://www.aopa.org/advocacy/pilots/medical/basicmed/physicians-guide-to-basicmed 1

I print out the Doctor Information package from AOPA and drop it off at the urgent care place when "making an appointment." Then he's ready when the time comes, and it goes quickly with no surprises, 1
