laytonl Posted October 18, 2023 Report Posted October 18, 2023 My grandson soloed a few weeks ago in our Citabria making him a fourth generation pilot. I told him he had to learn in the Citabria, but he will have access to the Mooney for his instrument rating when the time comes. He got his drivers license two days after turning 16 and soled the next week. He also has discovered girls. He will find all three pursuits expensive! lee 21 2 Quote
Echo Posted October 19, 2023 Report Posted October 19, 2023 (edited) That is fantastic Lee. Made my day. How many hours to solo? I had 13 hours in a Citabria and already had my PPL. I was about to solo and someone at the club that had just soloed braked to hard and without instructor weight nosed plane over into a prop strike. Bucket list to get that tailwheel solo some day. laytonl Posted October 21, 2023 Author Report Posted October 21, 2023 It’s complicated. Levi has been flying with either me or his father since he was 12. We didn’t get him an instructor until about two weeks prior to his 16th birthday. After about four hours, his instructor said he was ready, but my insurance required 10 hours with an instructor prior to solo. So, he soloed after the 10th hour of instruction. funny story. Early on, my son said Levi was pretty sloppy with coordinated turns, so they went out and he demonstrated 4 or 5 spins to drive home the importance of keeping the ball centered. He said, the ball has never left center since. The instructor also commented that his turns are always perfectly coordinated. lee 1 Quote

dkkim73 Posted October 21, 2023 Report Posted October 21, 2023 Congrats to all! That Citabria will surely treach stick and rudder skills. I was sharp for a while after flying one; I probably need to again... Cars, planes, girls. Just need to start juggling chainsaws but that sounds pretty banal by comparison. Quote
laytonl Posted October 23, 2023 Author Report Posted October 23, 2023 Anthony, we are increasing the pilot population the old fashioned way - grow your own! Lee Quote
