lamont337 Posted March 3, 2012 Report Posted March 3, 2012 I'd like to add an oil filter adapter to my C and see two choices, one from Casper Labs and one from B & C Specialty Products. Does anybody have any experience with either one of these units or any others that didn't come up in my search? Also not real sure if I should go with this upright style or with a horizontal type due to cowl clearance. Horizontal is twice as much $$. Links for each are below: http://www.chiefaircraft.com/aircraft/oil-system-filters/filter-conversion-kits/cl-1000a-stc.html http://www.bandc.biz/oilfilteradapter-stcpma.aspx Horizontal: http://www.chiefaircraft.com/aircraft/oil-system-filters/filter-conversion-kits/lyc-lw13743.html
Piloto Posted March 3, 2012 Report Posted March 3, 2012 Before buying any of these adapters verify clearance with the engine mount and accesories. José
markeg1964 Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 I have a M20B and my A&P recommended P/N 77852. He preferred not to use a remote mount and said this adapted works well on Mooneys with limited space behind the motor. I thought it would be hard to change the filter without making a mess but it is not hard at all. I’ve been really happy.
Ned Gravel Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 Clarence put the same one on my 65 E model that Mark has on his. Works well. No problem even for me to change the oil and filter. Gotta be a little careful on catching the drips in unscrewing the filter, but that has already been discussed elsewhere. The only other considerations are the safety wire ones and how much torque to apply to the new filter when installing it.
Lionudakis Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 I just got one for my 62 C, It is a horizontal ( filter is inline with crankshaft) from J&J Airparts, I haven't installed it yet, but just looking I don't see any clearance issues. It is rumored to be the same part lycoming buys and rebrands, but cheaper. 150 bucks, plus shipping and gaskets for the temp probe and vernatherm. FAA-pma'd part. Superior has one to, for 190ish, same part.
Riq Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 Here is my experience....4 hours and a couple custom tools later the 77852 did not work on my 63 m20c. The prop cable bracket was too close in the rear to allow any filter access. A remote filter would have to be the answer in my case. I should have measured with greater accuracy the first time. Not sure what others are finding, but I never found this out from anywhere on the net so I thought id save someone the hassle someday.
BigTex Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 I already loose sleep over hoses going to the oil cooler. The hassle of changing the filter every four months is far less than the chance of two more hoses leaking or going bad.
N601RX Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 I got this one from aero-in-stock about a year ago. It was around $150. The lycoming version was over $500 http://www.aeroinstock.com/products/product_search_results.php/search=IDc3ODUy

The hassle of changing the filter every four months is far less than the chance of two more hoses leaking or going bad. I added the lasar oil cooler relocation kit last year and eliminated those 2 long hoses that are close to the exhaust. If your needing new hoses anyway, the kit isn't a bad deal.
