outermarker Posted March 26, 2023 Report Posted March 26, 2023 I have an IO360 A1A that I’d like to get a mechanical tachometer for. Does anyone have one sitting on a shelf that they might considering parting with? I’m old school and understand needles and markings quicker than flashing led’s. If you have converted to a digital tach, what did you install? I’m on the fence at the moment and really don’t know much about the good, bad and ugly of the digital tach, but this old dog can still learn new tricks. Thanks! Quote
carusoam Posted March 26, 2023 Report Posted March 26, 2023 your not alone preferring the analog display… but, there have been digital displays to help with that in Mooneys since the 80’s PFM…. Many mechanical tachs have been replaced by the one EI has… kinda of an electronic gauge that simulates the goodness of the old analog one. The O1s got a digital tach, that displays by moving a servo driven needle. there is some MSers that had an old tach… 1) First they had the cable replaced… 2) Then they went with the EI tach… https://iflyei.com/product/r-1-rpm-tachometer-instrument/ 3) Then they went with the JPI900… Let’s see if @Marauder is around…. For questions bout the EI tach find @oregon87 Best regards, -a- Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted March 26, 2023 Report Posted March 26, 2023 I have the UMA tach. I have had it for over 10 years. It has been mostly trouble free. It is an electronic tack with an analog display. It is also the cheapest option out there. The only trouble is with the pickup that goes in the tach cable hole. It has vibrated apart a few times. Since I started lockwiring it in place, it has been trouble free. Quote
Wildhorsetrail Posted March 27, 2023 Report Posted March 27, 2023 I've got a mechanical tach removed from a 79 M20J that I'd sell if you're interested. Quote
cliffy Posted April 4, 2023 Report Posted April 4, 2023 Had my tach replaced with the Horizon electronic tach years ago. I guess no longer in business. Took some time getting used to the numbers bouncing around all the time. The feature of being able to see which mag had issues was nice but not mandatory. Had I to do it again I'd probably stay with the mechanical tach. I'd change the tach cable at the same time. Easy to do at any speedometer shop (if they are still around). Buying used, you have the issue of the hour meter in the tach being set for the last engine it was on. Quote
