FlyingDude Posted November 29, 2022 Report Posted November 29, 2022 Hi gang, Sick of constant oil leaks through the butterfly clamps on the rubber connector between the oil return tubes and the engine block nipple on my IO360, I just purchased Lycoming worm clamps... But, I saw that Vans people prefer spring clamps, due to their constant squeezing. They say that these spring clamps follow the expansion and contraction of the metal nipple/hose, and thus never loosen up. https://vansairforce.net/community/showthread.php?t=208654 https://vansairforce.net/community/showpost.php?p=1185599&postcount=3 Anyone used them on their certified aircraft? Any MS/AN parts? Thanks. Quote
A64Pilot Posted November 29, 2022 Report Posted November 29, 2022 I first became aware of spring clamps on US made Automobiles in the early 70’s If you use them buy the special pliers with the cut outs for them to fit, makes it a lot easier. Same thing on Amazon is $10 more, they have cut outs on the ends too. https://www.autotoolworld.com/Irwin-Industrial-Tools-1773627-Pliers-Hose-Clamp-8_p_221956.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiA-JacBhC0ARIsAIxybyMF1UdzxNS-fbawASoOgp_sIOZYyUGz2fTAKa1b7ZzQcLHPmHzlOjEaAtd2EALw_wcB Different pliers for the flat clamps, the baby Continental uses ring AKA wire type. But my 1946 Cessna with its C-85 engine has spring clamps on its push rod seals, so they have been on Certified aircraft since the 1940’s. Not sure that gives you justification to put them on a Lycoming, I think it depends on the manual, if it says install worm clamps I think not, if it says install clamps, then maybe. 1 Quote

carusoam Posted November 30, 2022 Report Posted November 30, 2022 My M20C got new hose clamps of the proper size… When I got the plane… there were a few of the wrong size… and many that were decades old…. The first leaks we stopped… were the new hoses and clamps… The second leaks stopped… were the old cork seals under the rocker covers…. +1 for new oil return hoses, hose clamps, and seals… Things to consider if you can’t get the spring style clamps… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a- Quote
