It's coming up time for considering an overhaul of our engine on our (1965) M20-E, which is now approximately 2,700 hours SMOH.  The Lycoming is running beautifully: smooth, about a quart of oil added every 12- 14 hours, excellent temps and great power.

I subscribe to the Mike Busch theory on overhauls: keep flying until the engine starts telling you it's ready for an overhaul.

Plus, overhaul times are running 4 to 7 months at present (for a lot of reasons) at many shops.

Has anyone priced getting a factory rebuilt engine made (I don't think they are just sitting around), then swapping it out with our old engine when it is delivered?

What would a running, high time engine fetch on sale? Good for core only rebate?

If the net price is relatively reasonable, and the wait time would only be that needed to switch out the old for the "factory new", it seems like a reasonable trade off.

Alternatively are there engines out there that could be bought and sent off to a reputable shop and rebuilt, then swapped in a similar manner? Where would I look?

Thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,

Bucko Strehlow

You should check Western Skyways. I have bought two overhauled engines from them and had good results. After sale service was good too. And you reduce downtime by flying the old one till the new one arrives.

I started on that path and both times the broker (AirPower) called me back and said Lycoming offered me a rebuilt engine for the same price. On the factory rebuilt you have 6 weeks to return your core.

As Skip pointed, check AirPower for prices. IIRC, latest price for rebuilt IO360-a1A is $38.5k. I paid around $34.5 in January add it was delivered in June. You need to send the old engine as a core, otherwise they charge $17.5.

If you have original engine to your E, rebuilt and new is only option from Lycoming - they wouldn't replace it for OH engine older then 38 years. But if you go with rebuilt,  you can order it and fly the old one and do the swap, plus you get the rolling tappets good warranty and such. after all said and done, factory prices (a year ago) were not much more then other big shops... Even some smaller one would charge the same or more for OH and the lead time was longer.

Good luck

They also got Lycomjng to accept full value for my core even though the case was in 4 pieces and only 2 pistons were still attached and they were seized
