On my 65 Mooney M20E it seems like someone removed the flap for the power boost. Does anyone know of a good reason why someone would do this?

I’m at a lose!

That alternate air intake system has been updated… through the years…

Where the update was able to flow air more freely and the benefit of the alternate route wasn’t worth the dirt and ice problems that it had…

So… consider the plumbing upgrade when getting rid of the ram-air door…

PP thoughts only, my Mooney doesn’t have a ram-air option…

Best regards,

Neither does mine, they were put on planes built in between. Sometimes they were removed when doing other cowling or front-of-the-engine work, because afterwards it provided little extra manifold pressure.

When you removed the flap, do you mean there is just a hole there now or has it been covered up? If there is a hole there you are getting “unfiltered air” into the engine

Most of the time its because the seal around the flap degraded and had to be replaced, so they disconnected and sealed it up at some point. Ive thought about doing it. On the E model, as ive been told, its actually helpful. On the J and up it seem the cowling has changed enough it doesnt really matter anymore.

There isn't an open hole and it doesn't seem to be covered up, it looks as if the lower cowling has been replace. Please explain how covering up the opening helps.

It stops power loss from a flap that doesn't seal off properly when closed.

If the cowling has been replaced, then its likely not there. Coving a hole also helps reduce air resistance. Less air resistance, more efficient going through the air.

When the ram-air gets removed…

Some planes go through the process of making it look like it wasn’t ever there…

Of course… some Mooneys get a complete upgrade to a newer cowling…

Checking the back side of where the ram air used to be… might reveal some fiberglass work…

PP thoughts only,
