DanM20C Posted February 2, 2021 Report Posted February 2, 2021 I flew into Airventure with the Mooney Caravan in 2018. It was my first flight with the Caravan so I had not yet been assigned a call sign. Of the 70+ Mooneys on the ramp at MSN this little guy chose to lay under my plane. He was sound asleep when we arrived on Sunday to fly into OSH. After a few photos he ran off, toward the Air National Guard facility. So at the Caravan Banquet I was given the call sign "Groundhog" I wasn't thrilled with this name as I was hoping for something cooler, something more personal. About a week later it occurred to me that my little run in with CO was on Feb 2nd, Groundhog day. So "Groundhog" happens to be very fitting. Now Groundhog day has a new meaning for me. Today is the 4 year anniversary of becoming the luckiest guy alive. So happy "Groundhog" day everyone! Another interesting fact. The F16's that intercepted me during my little nap were from the Madison Air National Guard, the same place the groundhog ran off to. Cheers, Dan "Groundhog" 7 2 Quote
201er Posted February 2, 2021 Report Posted February 2, 2021 Congrats Dan groundhog! Word of advice, don’t go anywhere near the mayor of NYC. He killed the NYC groundhog Staten Island “Chuck” back in 2014. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/ny-de-blasio-groundhog-day-staten-island-chuck-killing-20200128-uei2wqa6g5fzrd3kzwqvi7ve4y-story.html%3foutputType=amp 1 1 Quote
GeeBee Posted February 2, 2021 Report Posted February 2, 2021 I encountered two groundhogs today on the road on the way to the airport. I guarantee you they did not see their shadows or the car than ran over them! 1 Quote
hammdo Posted February 2, 2021 Report Posted February 2, 2021 So, they truly are ‘ground’ hogs.... ;o) -Don 1 Quote

Ross Statham Posted February 2, 2021 Report Posted February 2, 2021 Many years ago while living in metro Atlanta I saw a dead beaver, flattened and straddling the double yellow lines in the middle of a busy road in Gwinett County.... wait for it.... called Beaver Ruin Road. (No kidding.) But not on Groundhog Day. Looked very much like the above photo, but definitely flatter. Or am I too much off topic on this? 2 1 Quote
GeeBee Posted February 3, 2021 Report Posted February 3, 2021 Beaver Ruin Road, I always have trouble saying that without breaking into laughter! By the way anyone ever see a baby groundhog? I've had two in my yard. They grunt and growl like the Tasmanian devil in Looney Tunes. 2 Quote
201Steve Posted February 3, 2021 Report Posted February 3, 2021 Your story keeps getting more wild Dan! You know, ironically I brought you up last night. I am the maintenance officer for our local CAP squadron, and our safety officer gave a briefing on CO poisoning. I took the opportunity to speak to your story and lobby for a sensorcon that would actually be useful as opposed to the trash paper card that’s currently being relied on. I mentioned that I’d try to find your discount code. I log on and your re-threads are right on top. Hm. 1 Quote

Funny, I brought Dan up just this afternoon while talking with a client. Happy Birthday Dan! You have made quite an impact on many people, some that you never even met. @DanM20C I hope you and your beautiful family are doing well. 1 1 Quote
