charlesual Posted April 11, 2018 Report Posted April 11, 2018 I recently sent my 3 blade Hartzell out for inspection and reseal. They statically balanced as part of their service. They suggested I dynamically balance when it got remounted which I just completed. I was completely blown away what a difference this made. I literally can put a glass of water on my dash and there would be no movement. Best $340 I ever spent. Sensenich prop at KLNS (Lancaster) did the work and takes 1-2 hours. Great restaurant next door too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 4 Quote
Htwjr Posted April 11, 2018 Report Posted April 11, 2018 I had mine done a few months ago. Wish I had done it sooner. Quote
carusoam Posted April 11, 2018 Report Posted April 11, 2018 Great Pirep, Charles... Got any detail on the IPS, before and after? Best regards, -a- Quote
charlesual Posted April 12, 2018 Author Report Posted April 12, 2018 Great Pirep, Charles... Got any detail on the IPS, before and after? Best regards, -a- I know what an IPA is. Heady Topper is my fav. Not sure what IPS is. If you’re referring to how much weight he put on, all I can say is he screwed 2 different weights onto the flywheel and validated the results with a 2500 rpm run up. What I was told is dynamic prop balancing should really be referred to as engine, prop and spinner balance. A lot of forces at work. Another small point is if you loose a blade or otherwise get massively imbalanced. The vibration forces could literally shake a motor off the aircraft which would be a very bad day indeed. Probably not recoverable if airborne for obvious reasons. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
BKlott Posted April 12, 2018 Report Posted April 12, 2018 When I had mine done the pre-balance vibration was .4 ips (inches per second). After the process it was fluctuating between .01 and .02 ips. The improvement was amazing! Quote
carusoam Posted April 12, 2018 Report Posted April 12, 2018 Inches per second... the units that dynamic prop balancing is measured... Before can be close to one... after can be a really small number... IPA is pretty good too. Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
Browncbr1 Posted April 12, 2018 Report Posted April 12, 2018 I found that a nicely balanced prop significantly reduces pilot fatigue. Quote
