Steveair Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 Hi All: Want to know if anyone has a pattern for making (sewing) a boot for the landing gear johnson bar. Also for the aileron and flap push rods that go down through the dog house of nose wheel. Quote
Shadrach Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 I winged mine using the old one (which resembled a rotten bulap sack) as an example... It will require 2 pieces. you will need to form a fabric tube (slightly oversized) which is held in place by 2 rubber O-rings. The tube is sewn to a rectangular piece that is glued and screwed to the floor. You may cut the rectangle to allow for extra material where the bar travels. I used a stretchable ultrasuede. It took me 3 tries to get it right. But I'm not addept with a sewing machine or a needle and thread... Quote
Steveair Posted April 5, 2011 Author Report Posted April 5, 2011 Thanks a lot Ross. I cut the old one off over a year ago and threw it away as it was rotten, not thinking I should save it and use as a pattern. Quote
knute Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 Lake Aero (LASAR) replaced mine a couple of years ago, and it's a nice clean fabric boot- you might ask them about sourcing. -Knute '66 M20E - N6066Q - KSQL (San Carlos, CA) Quote
Igor_U Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 As I understand it, LASAR makes their boot themselves. I’ve ordered it few years ago when refurbishing my interior and I didn’t like it at all. It was made out of thin stretchable fabric and workmanship was not good at all. My wife sewed me a better one using thin vinyl, more durable and looks better. YMMV. Igor ‘67F @ KPAE Quote
sleepingsquirrel Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 Can you put one of these on, without putting the aircraft on jacks, without crashing? Quote
carusoam Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 Check into Airtex for alternatives. I got some boots from them when upgrading the rug in my M20C. http://www.airtexinteriors.com/ Sleepingsquirrel has a good point. It may be difficult to get the fit around the Johnson bar correct while it is in one position. The boots for the control rods may require that the rods be disconnected, this is also worthy of having the help of an A&P. Best regards, -a- Quote

Igor_U Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Well, On my plane, boot is held by the plastic trim piece on the floor, between the seats. You could remove that and, while retracting gear, slip the new boot over the Johnson bar. Fastening the trip and boot could be done safely, on the ground. While I am not recommending this, it can be done; I know someone who did it. Or you can wait for next annual inspection. mooneygirl Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 I got mine from LASAR as well. Very high quality. I tried to figure out a pattern then thought I better go with LASAR part. Quote
Igor_U Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 Ross, You are right about the floor trim and nose gear well (cover) must be removed to attach the boot… after all our planes must be the same. I’ve look into this 5 years ago so memory is somewhat faded. However, this can be done with the gear down while safely on the ground. All you have to do is first slip the boot over Johnson bar when in transition. I don’t recall any glue on the old boot but I know it was not original; screws are holding the booth quite good but adhesive would prevent any possible movement. Igor_U Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 Ross, I have a question about the carpet (picture #2) piece surrounding the J-Bar: Is that custom made or comes with Airtex kit for Mooney? My carpets are old and green and currently I have no such piece between the seats. I’ll probably order from Airtex. Thank you. Igor ‘67F Quote

kerry Posted April 8, 2011 Report Posted April 8, 2011 My johnson bar boot is a black sock which was placed by the previous A&P owner. It functions fine but everytime I look at it I wonder if the previous owner wore it on his foot and if he did I hoped he washed it prior to installing it on the johnson bar. Quote
