I'm journaling the "new to me E" story in a Google Docs document. Right now it's kind of a jumbled mess, but the later pages are a roughly as-things-happen chronicle. If anyone's really bored enough to want to follow along, PM me for the link... It may end up being a 'cautionary tale,' but I remain optimistic. :)

Chris, consider putting a link in your signature line...

I have seen a few people do this kind of thing...

MS has a blog area that nobody seems to be aware of.  Mostly accidental posts are in there.

Best regards,

I kinda want to keep the 'raw' version semi-private. When the journey is complete (at least the first chapter; 0A7 -> KSMO), I'll edit it into something coherent and post that. Likewise for other milestones. Kinda want to keep my unedited stream of conscience ramblings non-Google-indexed. For now.

Excellent write up.

One quick note regarding your Jep updates between Fusion on Mac or Windows.... you can always cal Jep customer service and tell them the situation. They'll reset the count on your downloads so you can use the windows machine.  So just FYI, you might already have it worked out.

Best of luck on the trip. I think you're gonna have a great time.

Thanks! Regarding Jeppesen, yeah, I figured that's the case, but it also gave me the impetus to get this thing working under VMware Fusion (I was sure it would be possible, though it was as semi-arcane as I anticipated). The netbook would have been really a PITA, with its tiny (1024x600) screen, incredibly slow performance, etc.

I'm giddy... Everything's falling into place...

Regarding the tool kit... as @Mooney_Mike I think said, you need a cell phone and good credit card. As long as you've got those covered... it's just one flight at a time between fuel stops.

If you try to cross the country on a schedule in any light single, you'll likely be disappointed.  But if you plan to take it just one fuel stop at a time, a Mooney will impress you with how far it will go.  Enjoy the trip!

From my trip from Texas to So. Cal recently, there's one thing I wish I had, even without a turbo charged plane... my Oxygen tank. I couldn't easily bring it on the airline to go get the plane, but I sure would have liked to have it for the 3.5 hour leg under the clouds in NM/AZ dodging rain shafts and I would have probably had to be over 12,500 to go over. About the only 'tool' I brought was a towbar, since the plane didn't come with one. Some plastic cleaner, rags and a funnel would have been nice though.

I keep a minimal toolkit in a Tupperware box: small socket set, reg & phillips screwdrivers, pliers, crescent wrench, safety wire pliers, Leatherman tool. Leaves room for a small can of Plexus and some sunscreen.

This traveling method took me from WV to western WY and back. I hit 200 hours total time enroute. Several XCs in a row, lots of new experiences and plenty of fun!

Enjoy your trip!
