WilliamR Posted June 13, 2016 Report Posted June 13, 2016 I have a M20K 252 with the TSIO-360-MB engine. The tail pipe PN654884/649004 is in need of repair (the last couple of inches have separated and the last 6 to 8 inches are very thin, not uncommon apparently). The engine is at 1300 hrs and new exhaust will come whenever I overhaul the engine. So, not a huge amount of time before a new exhaust. The dilemma; do I buy new surplus at $1100, or do I have it "overhauled" for a max of $500? The shop I've found to "overhaul it" is Aerospace Welding in Minneapolis. Has anyone had experience with them? If the reviews are good, that's the route. Before anyone recommends Acorn, I've already checked with them. Their repair cost was north of new surplus and therefore not really a viable option. I will note, they were hugely knowledgeable and helpful. Thanks William Quote
BDPetersen Posted June 14, 2016 Report Posted June 14, 2016 I've used Aerospace several times with great results. I even recall hand carrying a piece to MSP using an airline pass for quick repair. They know their stuff. Quote
mooniac15u Posted June 14, 2016 Report Posted June 14, 2016 Have you checked with Dawley? They did a complete rebuild on my tailpipe for about $250. http://www.dawleyaviation.com 1 Quote

Hoeschen Posted June 14, 2016 Report Posted June 14, 2016 I've ran exhaust from Aerospace Welding in MSP and from Acorn Welding in BC. Couldn't go wrong with either. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
carusoam Posted June 14, 2016 Report Posted June 14, 2016 Welcome aboard, Hoeschen. Does your experience with th welders include Mooney exhausts? Best regards, -a- Quote
Hoeschen Posted June 14, 2016 Report Posted June 14, 2016 Welcome aboard, Hoeschen. Does your experience with th welders include Mooney exhausts? Best regards, -a- Nope, continental O-470. For lycoming exhaust I've ran Vetterman on an O-320 but that was experimental, so no help there. My point is both are reputable shops, unless there is something peculiar with the Mooneys that I'm not familiar with? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1 Quote
N9453V Posted June 14, 2016 Report Posted June 14, 2016 I used Aerospace Welding in MSP for my engine mount (inspect, magnaflux, repaint) and Dawley to overhaul my exhaust. Great experience with both. -Andrew Quote
carusoam Posted June 14, 2016 Report Posted June 14, 2016 Hoeschen, Often, the next question may have additional technical detail. There were two types of heater muffs used back in the day and various versions of stainless steel including differences in wall thickness. My intention isn't to quiz the new guy as much as find out how much Mooney specific details you may be familiar with. Your experience with the shops is certainly appreciated. Best regards, -a- Quote
jetdriven Posted June 14, 2016 Report Posted June 14, 2016 Im running an AWI rebuilt tailpipe. They cut the pipe off the flange and weld on a new pipe. Then they cut the flange off and put on a new flange. Rebuilt but all new pieces. FWIW I think highly of them, and will use them again. Quote
AndyFromCB Posted June 14, 2016 Report Posted June 14, 2016 (edited) They did the engine mount on the Bravo and it came back looking like new. Great guys. On time and on the money. Edited June 14, 2016 by AndyFromCB Quote
WilliamR Posted June 16, 2016 Author Report Posted June 16, 2016 All, thanks. I've been busy working a couple deals that have me and my analysts running 24 hrs. I'll probably go with Dawley or AWI. They both seem to be priced similarly, also based on my conversations with them. Again, thanks William Quote
