I am considering an N number change for my aircraft.  I would be interested in any comments or suggestions forum participants would have regarding my latest irrational idea.  Any experiences, pros, cons, suggestions appreciated.

Also I am looking for recommendations of a good paint shop in the Northeast should this project go forward.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

I fly multiple aircraft and do a fair job at keeping the tail numbers straight on radio calls, change the number of one of them and I assure you i would be making corrections and or missing calls until I got use to the new number

We are as well. You might stumble for a few days, but I'm assuming you're changing to a number that means something to you, so you'll catch it quickly. Airline pilots change their call sign every leg.

Just make sure you change the little placard on your panel to your new N-number and it shouldn't be a big deal. It's not so hard to remember to say it...what will be a bit more difficult is to remember to listen for it when you're with ATC. You may get a few "Nxxx...do you copy?" questions until it becomes second nature.

I would put the new number on in a vinyl placard and not paint.  One day you will sell the plane, possibly to a different country where the registration change is simplified when it's just a vinyl placard.

I changed my M20K's number from 9599U (try saying that one aloud several times; even the controllers shortened it as soon as possible) to a number that is a combination of birthday and initials. Adjusting to the change was no problem at all, since I really disliked the original registration. Dealing with the FAA was also a non-event and really inexpensive.

Clarence's idea of vinyl numbers is a good one. Jeff's suggestion is also right on; it may even be required since the placard on the dash was original equipment.

Glad to hear dealing with the FAA was a non event and inexpensive.  That was a concern.  I like the idea of vinyl numbers but would probably still paint the background.  I will definitely research that option.  Will also replace the little N number placard on the panel, although dealing with a changed call sign is not a concern.  Thanks for the comments.

Any suggestions on paint shops in the Northeast?
