MooneyMitch Posted August 17, 2010 Report Posted August 17, 2010 We just returned from a terrific trip to/from this National treasure. Lots of gorgeous scenery up and back. Hiking in and flying over this majestic part of our Country is a memory we will not forget. I will post a few photos soon. WOW! Quote
jlunseth Posted August 17, 2010 Report Posted August 17, 2010 So did we. We were there over the weekend. Were you at GPI, I heard another Mooney on the radio, maybe that was you. We cane from the east on Friday night though, and the weather was really something. Overnighted in GTF to avoid crossing the mountains in the dark with tops to FL250. Saw some rams at about 10 ft. at the Logan Pass area. Two were full curls. Had a rental car from Hertz that we got through Glacier Jet, it had an electronic key, and when it was time to leave the car and key would not recognize each other, so we had to hitch a ride down to GPI. Hertz was called, but that car may still be up at Oberlin for all I know. Quote
skyking Posted August 17, 2010 Report Posted August 17, 2010 Hi Mitch: Let us know when the pics are up. Thats a beautiful part of the country. Quote
MooneyMitch Posted August 17, 2010 Author Report Posted August 17, 2010 Russ, we could see easily Canada from flying over Glacier. Kept a close on eye on the GPS so we didn't cross over accidentally. We do want to experience the Canadian Rockies in the future. Looks like GXPD has entered photos of those for us. WOW is the word. Takes your breath away, that's for sure. There are few mortals that get to view such spectacular sites from just above the terrain, as with Glacier. Flying is awesome, especially in our Mooneys. Quote
skyking Posted August 17, 2010 Report Posted August 17, 2010 Nothing beats mountain flying if done right. We are making tenative plans to attend the Colorado bash at the end of the month, weather permitting. I dont want to get too excited yet but i would love to bring the old "A" model to sit among her newer siblings. Quote

GXPD Posted August 17, 2010 Report Posted August 17, 2010 Mitch I agree with your assessment of flying in the mountains...WOW!! We are blessed to live in a part of the world that gives us the freedom to fly in such majestic air. Glacier park is a beautiful place to fly. Not for the uninitiated though. Winds in the valleys and passes can be wicked and doing a thorough weather assessment essential. KGPi very nice airport and CBP folks very nice. Hope you get a chance to come up this way. Lot's of nice places to fly. Quote
MooneyMitch Posted August 17, 2010 Author Report Posted August 17, 2010 Hi Steve. "Not for the uninitiated though. Winds in the valleys and passes can be wicked and doing a thorough weather assessment essential." This is why we stayed nice and high and went early in the AM. We resisted the tempation to drop down and rip through those passes. It was stunning regardless. One day to your area for us. Happy flying to you. Quote
skyking Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 Mitch:OK you are on. if we dont make the Aug get together we will come to the MAPA convention in Oct for sure. Guaranteed. Email me the details, like hotel etc. Now why is it a special day to you? Birthday? The day you met Jolie? (and brother, you better remember that day! LOL) Quote
eltee Posted August 19, 2010 Report Posted August 19, 2010 Here's a little Glacier...the only US national park without flight restrictions... http://www.backcountrypilot.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=5697 It's kinda nice to "tour" the park for an hour or so and still have legs for the Pacific coast of Washington with IFR reserves...Moo Ney!
