pgrusenmeyer Posted February 6, 2015 Report Posted February 6, 2015 I'm a new Mooney owner, a 1963 M20C . Thrilled to have it. Love to fly it. A fair amount of "deferred maintenance" needs to be done. I need a spinner. Have a Lycoming O-360-A1D Engine and a McCauley Propeller Model # 2D36C14. Thanks, Pat Grusenmeyer Quote
RobertGary1 Posted February 6, 2015 Report Posted February 6, 2015 Might start with your favorite prop shop. Might even be time to have the prop torn down anyway. Quote
carusoam Posted February 6, 2015 Report Posted February 6, 2015 Welcome aboard PG. What happened to your existing spinner? We have a knowledgable prop guy around here. Best regards, -a- Quote
bonal Posted February 6, 2015 Report Posted February 6, 2015 Welcom, tell us about yourself and you 63. You might check with Lake Aero Styling 707 263 0412 ask fo Dan, i think they have a couple used ones on the shelf that are servicable Quote
RobertGary1 Posted February 6, 2015 Report Posted February 6, 2015 I've had great experiences with Stockton Propeller. They were able to track down a used replacement case for my governor rather than sell me a new unit. (mine was no longer produced). -RObert Quote
M20F-1968 Posted February 6, 2015 Report Posted February 6, 2015 I think there is one on E-bay that I saw earlier today in passing. Quote
pgrusenmeyer Posted February 7, 2015 Author Report Posted February 7, 2015 Thanks for the responses. The spinner has approx 1 1/2 inch crack that has been stop drilled 3 times before I purchased the Mooney last fall and has cracking beyond the last stop drill. I'm not willing to keep stop-drilling. New prop with annual last May prior to sale. Not sure why the owner didn't replace the spinner at that time. I have not been able to detect continued cracking but several knowledgeable folks at my airport, including my A&P expressed concern, as in it is not likely to pass annual and a spinner coming apart in flight is no fun. I spoke with Dan at LASAR, new spinner is available but not used. He recommended K & K Specialty Welding in Wisconsin, an FAA certified shop who will repair and yellow tag for about $200, so I'm going to try repair before replacement. Pat Quote
pgrusenmeyer Posted February 8, 2015 Author Report Posted February 8, 2015 Daver, thanks for looking, that is not the spinner. I'm attaching a couple pictures of my current spinner. It measures 13 inches in diameter and 13 inches tall, with 10 screw holes around the base, 5 on each side. There is a brace on the inside of the prop openings, where you see the rivets. When I took the spinner off, I discovered the brace is cracked near the crack in the spinner. So I'll have to see if it can still be welded. I have a lead for a replacement from a MooneySpace PM. bonal Posted February 8, 2015 Report Posted February 8, 2015 The spinner that came with my D had a small crack less than 1/2 inch that was stop drilled. I was advised on my first annual that stop drilling is not an approved fix for spinners. Got it welded and that took care of the crack until a new crack formed in a different spot so I replaced with another spinner. The welded crack was still a ok Quote
carusoam Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 When looking for a spinner. Look for the proper filler plates as well... They fill in the backside area behind the blades. They also have a tendency to crack at the fastener holes... Or, I just don't see them in the photo...? Best regards, -a- Quote
mooney82q Posted February 12, 2015 Report Posted February 12, 2015 I have a spinner, backing plate and doublers from my 1965 Mooney M20C for sale. It has about 5000 hours on it. Last year, I replaced my propeller with a Hartzell Top Prop that came with a new spinner. My former propeller was a Hartzell. Not sure if there is a difference on the cutouts on the spinner. Let me know if you are interested. I can look up the part number for you. Mert Bean - 602-369-6410 KDVT Quote
ryoder Posted February 13, 2015 Report Posted February 13, 2015 Spinners look cosmetic to me. Are they structural? Quote
carusoam Posted February 13, 2015 Report Posted February 13, 2015 Ryoder, Cosmetic, yes. Specially when they are shiny. Aerodynamic, yes. Pointy on the front end. Under stress, yes. Rotational forces are pretty strong for the pretty little thing. In a tough environment, yes. High vibration, while being stressed by air pressure, rotational loads and varying OATs... Highly engineered, more or less. Light as possible, while being strong enough, rotationally balanced and color matched! Can't technically fly without it, AW issue... The engine, prop, and spinner are all part of the AW tests as is, in place... Keep in mind, I'm only a PP. This question may be better answered by a mechanic... Best regards, -a- Quote
M20C Posted February 16, 2015 Report Posted February 16, 2015 I just completed the cowling mod on my M20C which required replacing the spinner assembly... I have the spinner, backplate and filler plates if anyone is interested. Excellent shape from a Mooney with 2000 hours TT Quote
