The-sky-captain Posted July 14, 2015 Report Posted July 14, 2015 I always punch a small hole on top of the filter, then turn the filter so the hole is pointing about towards the ground. Then put something like a water bottle with the top cut off under the hole (thinking this form a funnel would work well here?). Then I use the air compressor in another hole I ouch on what is the top now to blow as much oil out of the old filter as possible. Yeah, that's a good job for the form a funnel. I also use it to drain the oil overnight from the engine and for catching the oil when checking the suction screen.
PaulB Posted July 14, 2015 Author Report Posted July 14, 2015 I bought one of those form a funnels but ended up not needing it on my most recent change. What I did was drain the oil immediately after flying and then coming back a few days later to remove the filter. Didn't spill a drop.
Shadrach Posted July 15, 2015 Report Posted July 15, 2015 How many of you actually put a wrench on your filter? Perhaps I'll get flamed for it, but the only time I've ever needed to use a wrench was when one of my partners did the last oil change and over tightened the filter.
DonMuncy Posted July 15, 2015 Report Posted July 15, 2015 Ross, I always have to use a wrench to take my filter off, and I always tighten it with a wrench as well. 1
Shadrach Posted July 15, 2015 Report Posted July 15, 2015 I turn it about 1 to 1.25 times beyond gasket contact and then safety wire it. Never had a leak, never had a problem at removal.
bradp Posted July 15, 2015 Report Posted July 15, 2015 There's a torque value printed on the filter. I use that and safety. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1

We torque every filter every time. DC4 compound makes them easier to remove. Every filter is opened and examined. Clarence
jetdriven Posted July 16, 2015 Report Posted July 16, 2015 if you tighten it 3/4 turn beyond gasket contact, it is right at 21 FTLB where it should be.
Royski Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 In my plane with the IO-360A3B6D, if I am at the usual 6 quarts and the engine has not been run recently, there is no significant amount of oil in the filter to make a mess. Personally I like the tradeoff of this versus the vague benefits of draining the oil while the engine is hot.
