Ragsf15e Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 Hello - Does anyone have contact info for a CFI in near KGGG (Longview) for an insurance checkout on a "new" M20F? How much should something like that cost? Thanks! Quote
Hank Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 I bet The Don has some. Maxwell Aviation at GGG. Quote
mike_elliott Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 A couple of ideas here, Garret is one of Don's ferry pilots. He could actually teach you something other than just getting in the required hours in for insurance purposes. It depends on what your end game is, to learn how to fly your plane or get the mandated time in on how you should go about this. Parker Woodruff might be another good choice if he is in the area. Don is heading to Tom Rouch's right at the moment to help him celebrate old age, but he can arrange Garret for you. call his cell. Quote
BTR Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 I was lined up with the ferry pilot for my check out. I had zero hours in a Mooney when I picked up my M20F after the prebuy/annual at KGGG. I spent 5 hours with him on Friday afternoon of which only less than an hour was in the plane. Saturday afternoon (after his regular students lesson) we spent about 5 hours in the plane and he was ready to sign me off. I think he charged about $600. I think if I had to do it over again, I may spent a little more time to find someone that does Mooney specific training. Don't get me wrong this instructor had many hours in Mooneys , but after flying my plane for almost a year now, there were some topics that where not covered and some topics that could have been covered more in depth. I did feel comfortable (safe) enough when I left on my two hour cross country trip home. The insurance company did not require a specific number of hours. Just a sign off by a CFI. Note: the CFI was not the previously mentioned Garrett Quote
Ragsf15e Posted June 19, 2014 Author Report Posted June 19, 2014 As usual, thanks for the inputs! I appreciate your time and thoughts. I'm so excited to get in my new plane, I'm sort of thinking past the insurance checkout, but if I'm paying that much, I hope to get something out of it! Quote

You can expect to pay a decent CFI about $50 hour, Mooney specific instructors are about 50-70/ hour, but you will get more in your hour relating to your plane than a generic CFI. As a Mooney Specific MCFI, I cannot emphasize the importance of the principle of primacy, Learn it right the first time, it makes my job and your job easier in the long run, and will be cheaper in the long run. Mooney CFI's are cheaper than the guy wrenchin on it in Texas, for sure, just as vital to keep you safe, and as a datapoint, a heck of a lot cheaper than what a plumber costs. And if your not careful what you eat in Longview, a lot less than the heart surgeon 1 Quote

Note: the CFI was not the previously mentioned Garrett Was this by chance Jason Kramer? I spoke to him about getting checked out in my Mooney but I thought he was very expensive and wanted to spend quite a bit of time on the ground as well as in the plane. I think he quoted me $600. I used Tom Tweeddale out of Denton, TX. He's not Mooney specific but with over 600 hours of instruction time in Mooneys. He met me in Longview, we picked up the plane and flew it to Sherman, TX. On the way we did maneuvering, slow flight, stalls, etc. There was also plenty of time for theory questions and learning the systems. In Sherman we did several landings and takeoffs including short field, soft field, etc. and picked up fuel. From there we flew to Hidden Valley to drop Tom off at home. The insurance required 5.0 hours and a signature in the log book. Tom charges $35/hour. Quote
BTR Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 Yes it was Jason Kramer that I used. I don't want to sound negative about him. I think he did a good job for me. Looking back I would have liked to have covered more power managment, engine managment and maybe some topics that would be seen as important by someone that owns and flys his own Mooney on a regular basis. Since this is my first plane to own, I was and am still absorbing as much quality information as I can get. Quote
Hank Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 Sign up for a MAPA PPP. Lots of good information. My first was five weeks after I finished my required dual. Quote
