Ya know I guess in our area hangar space is relatively cheap as compared to most other parts of the country however I can't see for the life of me why the city or county government has got to have their hand out trying to steal our damn money at every turn. In our town for example, you can't get into a city owned hangar unless you're on a waiting list for half a damn decade, you can build a hangar which is called a "Condo Hangar" a small one costs about 100grand then you've got to lease the land from the county/city which is a few hundred a month, then they tax you on it which makes no damn sense to me since you don't own the land. The lease runs out and you don't own the building, they take it back from you when that happens. You aren't allowed to live in it and if they catch you using a mechanic that isn't an "approved" mechanic (one that has probably paid the city/county some sort of fee) they can throw you out, it's a crying shame this country is so Effed up! It's like dealing with the mafia! It's sickening!

Sorry something not working right, can't edit now....any ways give the government long enough they will screw everything up.

Our class delta airport at RST has the same issues......politicians running the place with the only FBO there being signature and gas at $6.69..... And that's self-serve! Don't ask what full service is.

We have a bunch of new, cheap to rent hangers, that have settled and flood with water (which I could live with) but they must hate GA because they have ridiculous insurance requirements and square footage minimum requirements that start at north of 8,000 ft to eliminate even the thought of signature getting competition.

A good fellow has been trying to start a FBO for the little guys as RST, doesn't even have a GA mechanic on the field because none of the surrounding airport mechanics can afford to reside at RST. If you fly to RST just hope your plane doesn't break down.

Besides that we got nice control tower folks. 4 private hangers all on government leased land......

Most of this junk comes down to the airport sponsor (the city, county or whom ever) taking Federal money to improve the airport. Lots of entanglements when that is done. If the airport takes Fed money it can't sell the land to private folks unless the Feds agree (ya right). Hangars on Fed supported airports are required to be used for aviation purposes only (no condo hangars with living quarters). The sponsor has to comply with fire regulations dictated by a national standard book and the definitions are astounding if you read it. The airport must have a "Master Plan" on file with the Feds. It has to be updated on a certain schedule and the Feds have to approve it. If the airport has ANY commercial airline service it's a quagmire to wind your way through the rules especially on the "Security" aspect.

How many airports can a kid on a bicycle get onto today and just wander around getting interested in flying? I did it when I was 15 every day but NOT NOW!

Go volunteer for your local airport advisory board and see what I mean. I did it for 3 years here.

And we wonder why the thought of flying is dying out!

Cliff you nailed it.. You've have to wonder where there bread and butter will come from when we are not replaced by younger pilots. I grew up watching sky king with major urges to go fly. What's up with the 20's yr. olds. Wish I had answers but we are run by a bunch of whores who think GA is rich folks with full pockets, they don't realize we need to budget in an effort to support the love of our life...I wonder if the Wright Bros are looking down at us and seeing what has come of there dreams?

The flip side to Cliff's accurate statement is that with the federal money comes the commitment to operate the facility as an airport for basically for ever. Without that, most counties would have closed up the airport and sold the land to developers long ago.

Conspicuously missing from this conversation are the three words "supply and demand".

By utilizing regulations to unnaturally restrict supply, they can demand from you wealthy plane owners, whatever the traffic will pay.

Agreed.

And I am on my local airport advisory committee - in fact I am the chair of the committee.
