In a classic case of "while you're in there..." I'm now planning to upgrade my engine monitor system while I have the engine out for overhaul.

Out will come a complete JPI EDM-700 system with CHT & EGT probes (4 cylinder!) and the fuel flow transducer.  Hoses might be included as well...TBD.  It will include the entire harness, old-style data dump serial port, and EGT/FF panel switch, and users guide.  System and display were working perfectly when I last flew prior to removing the engine.  $1500, 30-day checkout period included.  I also have an OAT probe from my salvage plane that I'll include, but the harness end was cut and I'm not sure if it is usable.

Available separately is an EDM-730 unit, with no harnesses, from my salvage J.  I've powered it up on the bench and it seems to function normally, and the display looks great.  This would make a great upgrade for those of you with a -700 or -800 already installed as it is plug-n-play.  It was previously programmed with fuel flow, OAT, TIT, and I believe Oil T & P.  I can try to verify the options if it matters.  I believe JPI charges $150 to re-program a unit to whatever parameters are needed, and update the operating software to the latest rev.  $750 outright, 30 day checkout period.  SOLD SOLD SOLD

I didn't even price-shop the -730, so thanks for finding that link!  I just pulled my price out of an orifice, and I think it is fair.  It should be sent back for a software update and re-programming to the next user's specs, so even with that modest additional cost it still ends up being a deal since there is no core charge with me.  I think the -700 unit is worth ~$500 by itself and could be sold easily enough.

I've been mulling the 930 vs EI vs Insight details for over a year now.

I've seen the 730 in the "slow" J, the one with the stinky pants and AOA...

It is a great display of all the key engine parameters.

Wake up call for anyone that does not have an engine monitor. Today could be your day!

Best regards,

I don't think there is a wrong answer out there among the modern engine monitors.  My plane came with the EDM-700 and it is a GREAT package.  I consider it the minimum benchmark for capability.  I wanted a primary replacement (although originally didn't plan to do it right now) and I insist on having it on the left side of the panel.  As my panel sits today, I cannot fit the -930, MVP-50, or the AuRacle into my space available, so kinda by default my choice was going to be the -900.  I've flown a little bit in a friend's Mooney with one installed, and my initial reaction was it squeezed too much into one medium-size display, but I eventually got used to it.  His was a Rocket with 6 cyl + TIT, so it was more crowded than a 4cyl version.

I plan to remove the original EGT, tach, MP/FP immediately, and disable the oil pressure since it has a pressurized line inside the cockpit (bad idea!).  Eventually I want to do a clean-sheet panel and remove the cluster gauge as well.

I wanted to upgrade from the 830 to 900 or 930, but JPI has not been able to get approval to leave in the existing components and just add the extras the 900 or 930. At OSH they said it was the exact same parts, but according the the FAA the whole 830 would have to be removed and not just an upgrade option. They were working w/ FAA to get the upgrade approved. I have not followed-up, but I would like the 900 or 930 as a primary. Anyone heard if they got the upgrade approval?. I do like my 830, just would like a primary to remove the existing old stuff

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the harnesses are identical and not serialized, so if you put down in the logs that you removed the 830 and installed a 930, there would be no way to determine if the harness & probes were there or not.  You'd have to add the new sensors and probes of course...

Me too I have same set up as you and would love to do this. All I would need is fuel tank levels, oil pressure and amps and if have everything....let me know if you find out more!

I was trying to find a used EDM-700 with probes about a month ago.  And would have snapped this one up immediately.  But I've just purchased a new G2 from Insight.  I like the easy to read color display and the SD card in the front for easy access to stored data.  I bought it with the S&F discount and a good deal from my local A&P.  Now to just get it installed.

Twinter (and others),

For the most part the probes and harnesses look the same.  P1 is still the power harness, but is now 20Ga pwr/gnd wire with a choke and no serial port for data.  P2 and the ECT/CHT probes are the same. P3 (RPM/MP/OP) harness the same, but the pressure transducers are different.  P4 (FF/GPS) looks the same.  P5 (FP,FQ,Amps) is new.

My recommendation is to bite the bullet, and buy a whole new set.  Work closely with your installer to see what he is comfortable leaving the same (EGT and CHT probes and harness, FF transducer, OAT etc.) and at the end you will have a complete system as removed with some new probes / wires, some old for resale.

This is better than waiting for JPI to come up with an upgrade package, because an indicator without probes and harnesses has surprisingly low value because of the cost of building up a system out of spare parts.

Don,

Your knowledge is appreciated.

Try not to turn it into a sales pitch. There is a commercial part of this board that is better suited for that.

Hi All,

I'm a wannabe Mooney owner, had the chance to do some long flights in a 252 and a Bravo.  Plenty of time in Turbo Arrows and now a Seneca, so the 252 is my favourite despite what some might think about the engine.

Current ride is a Seneca II and a C172 amphib, busy building a Super Cub from a wreck with all the bells and whistles.  I can't help myself, end up buying a lot of nice avionics and engine monitors, so have some nice surplus stuff for sale.

Day job is developing power projects, had good success with some small hydro and wind projects in BC and Alberta.  Currently on a break, so spending way to much time on aviation bulletin boards and the airport CYPK, where I have a nice big hangar filled with projects and airplanes.

It is still available.  I've got one guy interested, but I haven't snapped pics of the entire "kit" yet to share with him.  PM me if you're interested!  Thanks
