Do any of you out there use a GDL 39 in your vintage Mooney with the standard windshield?  I'm starting to really like the Garmin pilot app and considering to pick up the new GDL 39 3D.  My concern is the size.  I have never seen one in person but the photos make them look a bit too big for the glare-shield.  The non 201 windshield doesn't leave much real estate for gadgets up there.

Thanks in advance for any pireps!

I use a GDL39 in my '62 C which has a one-piece windshield, but not the 201 long one. I just wedge the 39 in sideways to the right of the tubular center brace. It sticks in tight between the dash and the bottom of the windscreen, and the antenna freely rotates so is easy to position. I've never had it bounce out during  maneuvers or turbulence.

How long until Garmin pilot starts putting in some kind of svd at least on par with their Garmin 796 view, into their iPad app?

No idea. But I suspect with the new GDL 39 3d in service, it won't be too long.

Dave, thanks for the info. I might give one a try. Though I hate putting stuf on the glair shield.

I also wonder what they are doing with the flygarmin website as well. It's been offline for a bit. I wonder if they are trying to duplicate the ForeFlight function to cross populate the devices you own. Today, you can upload your Garmin flight plans from your iPad Pilot app to flygarmin.com and then have access to them with your iPad Mini, iPhone or another iPad. The limiting factor is that it doesn't load them up into the active flight plan. You still need to load it, then make it active in flight planning.
