Hey everyone!

Have a simple question. I have a W&B app on my iPad and I was pluggin in some numbers. Here is what I have:

380lb in the Front (2 Passengers)

270lb in the Back (2 Passengers)

25lb Baggage

51gal of fuel

It is saying this is within limits. Without going to into specifics of the empty weight of my aircraft and such, does this sound right to you guys that it would be within limits? I'm not looking for exact numbers, just seeing if I'm in the right ball park or something is wrong with my configuration. Just seems like quite a load for this plane but I would be pleasantly suprised if its doable.

Yeah, I know, 2 passengers in the back of a M20C will be like a can of sardines. :)

Do you not know what your useful load is? I suppose all Cs have a gross of 2575. Out of the factory your empty weight would have been about 1600 pounds but over the years added equipment probably reduced you usable to around 900. YMMV.

Your example with 300 pounds of fuel, 675 pounds of people and baggage is probably a little over gross but again you need to confirm what the figures are for your specific plane.

I would think the CG is well within limits based on the limited info. Is the software generic of have you put in all the correct weights, arms, and envelops?

For my '70 C, you're a bit heavy but CG is good. It all depends on your empty weight and arm. Note that it will vary slightly depending on the weights of the front seat occupants and which seat position they use. Hopefully both will slide forward somewhat for the back seaters. It's not too bad for an hour or two, just not in hot weather [so says I who have never ridden in my own back seat . . . but I've made several 4-person trips, only one round-robin much over an hour].

The chart shows CG within limits by just over ¼", but also 11 pounds overweight. Simple to correct by removing some gas or flying one lap around the pattern before boarding passengers.

Fly safe out there!

My December '63 C model was right at 1000 lb useful and I flew with similar loads quite often with no problems.  From sea level.  Flat terrain.  No reasonable loading configuration could get it out of CG.  Generally, if it would fit in the plane, it was safe to fly.  The plane has a great useful load for180 hp but high and hot operations would be something else entirely.

Just curious...what's the serial number of your plane?

The short answer is yes, doable, but that would put me within 10 pounds of max gross and I probably wouldn't fly it that way with the DA's here in the southwest most of the year.

Using the wt/bal. Program on fltplan.com for my C model shows you're fine at my C model limits.

CG is good, but remember there are different moment arms available for the front seats depending on full forward, or full aft positions on the seat tracks. With two pax in the back, your front seats will be using the shorter moments.

Besides being free and useable on-line, or off line. The fltplan.com program is very user friendly. It also gives you the option of emailing the final computations including the graph with fuel burnoff for your trip.

Like all such programs, it requires initial set-up, but once you've done that, it's quick, easy and accurate. I use it on my cheapie Android tablet.....it works fine, but it also works onthe iPad.

I would not for a moment encourage or endorse flying a Mooney outside the limits proscribed but if I had to choose between risking fuel starvation and taking off 60# overweight and I had plenty of runway and no terrain to out climb I know the plane does not turn into a pumpkin @ 2625# or 49.5".

Flame on.

As you know Part 121 ops are very conservative, but they do weight and ballance by "average weights". As I recall, all bags are 30#, all pax are 170#.

Do you think one of those "documented, certificated, approved" takeoffs over the years might have been " little" over-weight?

The engineers told me that no one ever worried about the wings folding on any given flight, but a great deal of attention was paid to the cumulative effect over the life of the airframe.
