rockydoc Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 After I purchased my Mooney, I sent in the FAA Bill of Sale and Application for New Registration--all with original signatures. The FAA has since contacted the seller and asked him to return the original registration and AWC to the FAA. The FAA has made no attempt to contact me. When I check the FAA website for the N number, it says that there "MAYBE" a problem with the registration. I then check for cancelled registrations. The FAA website says that the aircraft is not on the list of N numbers to be cancelled. Is this SOP to return original Registration and AWC to the FAA before receiving the new documents? Quote
201er Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 Not sure, but just wanted to point out that the "government slim down" forced through by our favorite democrats has wreaked all sorts of havoc on FAA documents processing. A lot of stuff is backlogged in the system. Quote
Matt Michael Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 I believe that returning registration is standard now but not airworthiness certificate Quote
Rhumbline Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 I'm certainly not qualified to answer to this but I purchased my plane early this year and the new registration showed up within two or three weeks of having submitted the application. Is it possible that the registration had lapsed prior to your transfer application? Quote

Is it possible that the registration had lapsed prior to your transfer application? I should have added that I submitted nothing more than the Bill of Sale and Registration Application Form 8050-1 Original copies of the latter had to be obtained from the FAA through a FSDO or OKC. rockydoc Posted October 26, 2013 Author Report Posted October 26, 2013 The registration had not lapsed. I submitted BOS and Original Registration App with original signatures. I have checked the FAA website where it clearly states that the only 3 things required are what you mentioned and what I submitted. Quote
rockydoc Posted October 26, 2013 Author Report Posted October 26, 2013 Has anyone on this forum who has registered an aircraft been required by the FAA to return the previous Registration and/or AWC? Quote
RocketAviator Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 Never return the AWC, yes you (the seller) are required to surrender the registration card within a very few days 3 I think but not sure. The new owner is required to carry a specific part of the 8050-1 (I think this the 3 part carbon copy form) you will get from FSDO or your title agent, until the FAA issued registration arrives to replace it. In the case of using a Title / Escrow agent they will handle everything except sending the registration back to OKC, they will do that too but most just send it to OKC directly and save a step. NEVER give up or send back your AWC certificate! 1 Quote
Jamie Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 I didn't have to do that. But. I don't have it with me (it's still in the plane) but the registration from the previous owner is still in there along with the new one. I seem to remember verbage on it about how it's supposed to be returned to the FAA in the event of a sale, signed by the original owner. I remember, because I thought this was odd and asked the broker about it. Apparently this either isn't done in practice, or I'm don't remember correctly. It could be on the -state- registration (ohio was previous state, and apparently they require a separate registration). What does the current registration (the paper kept in the plane) say? Quote
Dave Marten Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 Hold on to the AWC! Surrendering the old registration card is OK ( In your case, I'd mail the old reg card back to OKC directly and inform the previous owner of such). AWC stays with the plane. Something sounds fishy about the previous owner's request for the AWC...NO! Quote
MB65E Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 If you do forget the registration post sale, You'll get a letter from OKC if the registration is not returned. No fear, All you need to do is write a letter back stating the reason the Registration was not sent in. " The aircraft was sold and delivered with with the registration, it is no longer available" Did this back in May with a helicopter. I was stumped too and spent 20 min on hold to figure it out... Just more paperwork... -Matt Quote
