I have used both. Maybe I had an early portable device but there was akways a power/charging issue and I think the warranty was pretty meager (90 days?) So I bought a second one and maybe even a third generation. Those things are nice but pretty flimsy. I got in moderate turbulence one day and it flew off its mount. I put in a 345 and it works great. Not having to worry about recharging and toting the portable around is nice. Plus I suspect in 20 years when you look at my panel the 345 will still be there, I suspect that 5 or more portables will have come and gone.

What is the best case scenario, timewise, to put a GFC 500 in a Mooney M20C?

PS Engineering 8000BT vs Garmin GMA 345
jazztheglass replied to Lance Link's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
+1 for PMA8000. Love the USB charger. I was reading the features and there seems to be one I haven't used. Any comments on bluetooth "Audio IN" for lack of a better word (I forget the actual feature phrase) It basically lets you bluetooth the audio from the ATC and your intercom to an audio video recording device like a go-pro or maybe a phone. -
yea- no me saying you have another job is a little bit of a red flag

I would ballpark it like this: Shelter: Hangar fees would average $450 per month. You could get it as low as $250 or as high as $600. Tie down would be less than $100 per month. But your own hangar is priceless. Its like the treehouse you always wanted as a kid and the clubhouse you always wanted as an adolescent. It is an escape. I say that you could rent a hangar and not even have a plane and it would be worth it. Maintenance: Will depend on the plane but $7500 per year is a reasonable average. Insurance: Will depend if you go liability only or include hull value. I hate insurance in general of all types. Remember their MOA is to collect premiums and deny claims. But you probably get liability insurance. If you have a loan payment likely you will be required to have hull insurance. $4000 est. As mentioned in previous posts having your own plane is lovely. It is freedom and fun. Life is short. Buy the plane.

HELP- I am doing a mini upgrade to my Cessna 340: having professionals add engine monitors, an aspen, a G5 on the FO side, and fixing the autopilot. While they are doing that, the wife and I have been keeping ourselves busy with the upgrades we can do: new carpet (kit from SCS) new fuel cap paint, O-rings new placards and circuit breaker panel lettering new leather like interior (we actually did this ourselves) all new seats (we skinned the 30 year leather off the old ones and had an upholstery shop do these) new paint (and some new pieces) of the plastic trim window covers and now we are replacing all the external screws around the windows (under mechanic supervision) because they are rusty (this is actually kind of a pain to do) What suggestions do you guys have that an owner with limited mechanical skills but good energy and enthusiasm can do while his plane is being upgraded. I probably have a few more weeks of working time. FREE STUFF (and some that will be posted on Ebay) I have the old (one year old) carpet. I bought the "lightweight" kit from SCS last year because it sounded like a good idea. It was too light weight for me. If anyone wants it, it is free for the taking- just come get it. It is actually a fine product- just not robust enough for my application. Plastic window covers. I have four of these- not sure which windows they cover. I know know how to fix these but when I first bought the plane I went to Osh Kosh and bought new ones during a buying spree. They do need repaired but it can be done easily. Free- come get them. And they I will list on Ebay the myriad analog instruments I removed. Tach generators, what I call Mercedes type twin cessna instrumentation, airspeed indicator, altimeter, turn co-ordinator, etc. If anyone knows of something they want just email or call me. They are all located at KLOU. I'm going to post on the twin cessna and POA as well.

Landing gear small emergency!
jazztheglass replied to FastTex's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I had a similar episode. Retarded the throttle and got the gear not down audible warning. It ended up being the gear motor. Had it overhauled/exchanged by Lasar I believe -
Someone mentioned VW but it conjured up Nazi images Good call on the corvette- about as much room in the back seat!

So, at supper tonight at what I consider the world's best fly in restaurant (Les relais, Louisville, KY) I had the conversation with some pilots about what model airplanes correspond to model cars. We agreed upon cessna 172 (Ford taurus) and even cessna 152 (ford escort). When it came to Baron's we said Range Rovers. But when it came to Mooney we were split. My wife (500 Mooney hours) said Lamborghini Our friend (100 Mooney hours) said Porsche- I nixed this because of the negative association with the ill fated Mooney with the porsche engine I said Jaguar- old type, maybe even convertible. Anybody have another opinion n the Mooney or another airplane. It was fun conversation!

I am looking to buy "shrouds" for a JPI connector for CHT probes: https://www.jpinstruments.com/shop/cht-probe-4-pack/ They are the white tubular things in this picture. Does anyone know what they are actually called and where they may be purchased? It looks like JPI only sells them as part of this kit? Thanks Jefff

Overhead Panel Lighting Conversion Kit
jazztheglass replied to Mooney-Mark's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I must have an incandescent light somewhere because it does dim mine. At the next annual I am adding these: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/fiberlite.php?clickkey=1905324 -
Overhead Panel Lighting Conversion Kit

I replaced mine with LED bulbs. A little better light. Less heat when they fall off and bonk you on the head. https://www.superbrightleds.com -
Can't upgrade avionics if i wanted to
jazztheglass replied to McMooney's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I actually love the 480. It is quite old but there is a yahoo group that is a good source for help with parts and procedures. There is always a new box on the horizon but the 480 is a safe capable instrument. I inherited one when I bought a plane two years ago and it has been trouble free. -

So after deciding completely against the stormscope one of the ebay venders sent me a link for a scope "more in my price range." Which was kind I thought. SO here it is, what do you guys think of this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/352465483588

I appreciate your comments. My on board real time radar is good for about 50 miles before the resolution suffers. I think with that in real time and the ads-b ForeFlight and Xm 796 weather on minutes delay I can continue to fly conservatively and avoid any embedded storms. The stormscope would offer a fourth source and it is in op at present. I guess it technically might identify areas of heavy or extreme radar echoes that don’t have convective activity but to be honest I generally steer clear of these.

I've chased down the leads given on this and other pages. Thanks for the suggestions! I appreciate the cell phone discussion but I'm flying at 18-22K typically and have never had a wisp of cell coverage there. I have been impressed with the ads-b lightening strikes on foreflight via my garmin 345. The price of the processor alone for a wx-500 is going to be north of $2,000 with shipping. Probably north of $3,000 when installation is included (maybe less since the panel is apart right now). I know there are many people who swear by them but at some point I don't have an endless supply of money for the planes! Currently in the 340 I have real time onboard radar, xm weather, and ads-b weather. I think I will wait and see if the price comes down on the wx-500 or a used one comes on the market. I susepct the price will come down with the strikes being shown on ads-b. I guess one of the other reasons I wanted to get it working was that my MFD would always say sensor fail on that screen as I was shuffling through. That just kind of aggravates me. How much would the price of a processor come down before I would buy it. I don't know 50%? If I could get it installed for under $1500 I'd probably do it. What do you guys think? What is the value it adds, what price would you pay?
