Energizer or Lightweight starter for IO 550A in Missile
BobAustin replied to BobAustin's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Steven, Yes I would like the exact Energizer model when you have time to get it. Sounds like the lightweight starter is a no go on the IO550. PS Thanks for all the useful info you guys. -
Have annual coming up and have slow starting and occasional whirring when starting. Replacing the 2 Gill 35s with Concorde RG-35A this week to remove that variable. Forum has many posts for and against lightweight starters...Has anyone been happy with them in a Missile ? Ovation may be similar. Starter adapter may also be suspect.

To clarify... My Missile (serial # 5) when converted by Rocket Engineering was Experimental with a large sign in the window. The reason was that Darwin Conrad had not yet gotten final certification from the FAA. A couple of months later it was received and I simply took down the sign. Rocket has a great relationship with the FAA and had no problem with my Mooney Missile.

Scattering ashes anyone have experience using Mooney
BobAustin replied to RocketAviator's topic in General Mooney Talk
Speaking of someone always flying with you... When Al Mooney died, Roy LoPresti and I decided to scatter his ashes above the Kerrville Mooney factory. As you may guess a significant portion of Al Mooney flies with me in N211ZN to this day !! Bob -
Switching to Concord RG-45A from Gill G-35 in Missile.
BobAustin replied to BobAustin's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Thanks Seth...I will order the Concords. -
Wondering if any Missile (or Rocket) owners have switched. Mine is 14 V thus two batteries in the box far back in the tail. The dimensions are slightly different between the two batteries and they should fit...but ? Had problems with Gill G-35 life probably due to the inability to add water...thus going to sealed should help. Comments welcomed.

On my Missile they (2ea 14v G-35) Are in a box that is way back in the tail come along with a 19 lb weight to offset the io550. Still have about 1050 lb useful load. No easy way to check water level so going to Concord sealed batteries at annual. The extended space would be useful.

I have a spare cap from my M20J. I took off w/o locking down the lever and had to buy a replacement...then found the original cap. You are welcome to it for no charge. Probably needs new o rings. Send me a PM with your address and I can send it to you.

I have the Battery Minder installed with the aircraft temp probe. I have two 14V Gill G-35 mounted in extreme rear of my 201/Missile. The fluid level is only checked at annual because of the limited access. I leave the Battery Minder connected all the time. Using Don Muncy's suggestion I left the Battery Minder off for two weeks and sure enuf the plane would not start. After overnight charging it started right up. Batteries are about a year and a half old ! Previous Gills also lasted under 2 years. Guess I need Concords at annual in December. Any suggestions ?

Shakedown cruise, let the troubleshooting begin...
BobAustin replied to KevinR's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I agree with all of the suggestions BUT...in 2 different planes with a G530 and with a G430W the old King 165 is much more sensitive and has a longer range. Just use the 165 / 155 as your COM radio.- 17 replies

I use the Ultra Low Level CO2 detector sold by Aeromedix.com. Cost 199 and is far more sensitive than others. http://www.aeromedix.com/carbon_monoxide_detectors/ Bob

I saw this plane at DuGosh and these poor photos do not do it justice ! It simply is the most beautiful Mooney I have ever seen...and that covers 30+ years with Mooneys.

ADS-B is coming-What are you doing about it?
BobAustin replied to cliffy's topic in General Mooney Talk
Hondo, Interesting post re KT-74 vs GTX330ES...I have a G430W and a panel mounted 696. The screen on the G430W is too small to display traffic but the 696 would be perfect. Does the GTX330ES have the ability to show traffic on the 696 ? -

Have a Missile and it performs well at non-oxygen altitudes yet will quickly go to the teens if you want to. Most of our flights are 10.5 to 13.5 at 180k and 11.5 to 13.5 gph. Carry portable O2 and use O2D2 and use it sparely...ie 3 trips of 650nm per tank. I have 3000+ hrs in J models and takeoff performance in Pagosa Springs CO (KPSO) at 7600' elevation Is fine with 300 hp but not to relaxing with 200 hp. Usual loading is 320 lb crew, 92 gal and 100 lbs junk (about 40 lbs below gross). This allows landing with 2+ hours of fuel in reserve. 650 nm trip. See Scotts post above...he has it spelled out. No too many Missiles around but worth considering.

I use a Mini on a yoke mount and deal with the glare by shading the Mini when necessary. If the direction of flight gives too much glare I quickly remove the Mini and put it in my lap. Used it today and have good photo but unable to reres and upload. Can email to you if needed. Forgot to mention that I have an 85 Missile with the same yokes.

OK...my stranded with dead battery story. Back in early 90's we went to the Baja for fishing in our 85 M20J. You know what happened when we took the bags out...bumped the switch and left it on for 5 days. This was at a dirt strip at a fishing "resort" with no facilities. To compound things I had failed to bring the plug in jumper cable... Luckily ours was the last year for 14 volt battery. Finally found a guy with a van and a set of trashed out jumper cables. Got my wife into the pilot seat told her what to do, had to hold the jumper cable on the battery with side door removed, got guy to race his engine and wife to crank. IT STARTED... blowing sand on me while I paid the guy, remounted the battery door...climbed over my bride and flew back to Texas over 150 miles of the Sea of Cortez. No bulb for me. LED flashlite is fine.

Yearly maintenance cost for Mooney Bravo versus 252
BobAustin replied to manoflamancha's topic in Mooney Bravo Owners
Rocket engineering has support for my Missile as well. They are very responsive.
