Dripping oil after oil change
Mooneymite replied to ncdmtb's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Obviously, there are different levels/types of "fear". However, I think that healthy fear is a necessary component of aviation safety. One of my nephews once asked me how long it took to get over fear of flight. I told him that after 46 years of flying, I'm still fearful. Everytime I do a walkaround inspection, I ask myself, "How is this thing going to try to kill me today?". Is that fear? -
Dripping oil after oil change
Mooneymite replied to ncdmtb's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
This was about the only thing that caught my attention. What was it clogged with (!!!)? It isn't too unusual to have residual oil from an oil change. Often, if a mechanic doesn't know about "the trick" when changing the filter, there can be oil that pools near the nose gear and continues to drip for a flight, or two. However, the oil level will tell you if the oil spot is from "residual oil", or if it's coming out of the engine. If the oil level stays the same, you're probably good to go, but it just makes sense to mop up the residual oil for a variety of reasons. -
I figure it's about free as long as my wife doesn't snoop in the checkbook. Don't worry, be happy!

What? Who did that? Where did they do with the original comm antenna? I'd like to hear "the rest of the story"!

Congratulations on your sale. Sorry to see you give in to reality/practicality. However, let this be a stern warning to the rest of us Mooniacs to NEVER figure the true cost of operating our addictions...er, aircraft. :-)

CODY, Wyo. - A missing plane belonging to a Seattle pilot and his brother has been spotted on a mountain slope in a remote area of Wyoming not far from Yellowstone National Park, officials said. The plane, a 1963 Mooney M20C aircraft that was reported missing on Saturday, was spotted Monday morning by the Park County (Wyo.) sheriff's search and rescue team on the eastern slope of Howell Mountain. The condition of the two brothers who were flying in the craft is still unknown because rescuers have been unable to reach the crash site. The two - identified earlier as Ward H. Zimmerman, 86, of Seattle and his brother Robert, 84, of Huntsville, Ala. - were on a cross-country trip when their plane disappeared.

Fly-In Cookout Saturday May 17 KHRJ Erwin, NC
Mooneymite replied to jpusser's topic in General Mooney Talk
Wow! Read these comments: http://airnav.com/airport/KHRJ/WARREN#c This is an FBO we should support. -
There are probably a lot of variables that would mitigate any specific number. The compression, the type and condition of the prop/hub, and, of course, the atmospheric conditions. In the situations I know of where an intentional gear-up landing (gear won't extend) is made, it's running about 75%, the pilot can't get the prop to stop windmilling prior to touch-down.

Clearing a bank lien is pretty easy. I did a deal on a plane that had been bought by a broker at a Sherriff's auction. The owner was in jail and not in a mood to sign anything for anyone. Yeah....bank liens are easy!

If you just want a nav/comm, you can get a working KX 170B really cheap. Old technology, yes, but they work well and last a long time. These radios are being removed for up-dated avionics and are stacking up on the shop shelves. Check around. Of course the real question is do you really want to invest in old avionics?

Garmin 430/530 Waas data card wanted

Wait just a minute, Hank. Line forms to the rear on those $80 cards! Reminds me of the day my kids got in a big fight over imaginary cookies. :-) -
Garmin 430/530 Waas data card wanted
Mooneymite replied to mike_elliott's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
Pretty simple. Either it works, or it doesn't. Not too much risk. However, if you're offering me your Garmin WAAS card for $80, I'll take it! :-) -
Garmin 430/530 Waas data card wanted
Mooneymite replied to mike_elliott's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
I wonder if anyone has reverse engineered the data card and made an "adapter" to use some common form of memory chip? I'm not sure what the legality would be since this is memory used on a "certified unit", but I suspect the perpetrator would have no trouble selling his adapter. Obviously, _I_ would never buy one, but what if the hangar fairies brought one into my hangar? -
New Landing Gear Biscuits/Sore Bottom
Mooneymite replied to Wakeup's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Gosh! I could almost fly my plane from ATL to Tempe, get you to do the job in 4 hours and fly back to Georgia in less than the OP's 36 hours. 4 hours is impressive! -
Yes, public records are public....kind of. It's interesting that many aircraft owners are masked by LLC's, or Corporations. Others hide in fractional arrangements. Lot's of the rich/ powerful/ famous don't want people to know they own a high-dollar plane, or where they are flying. Try to find out where your favorite fund manager is flying his Global this week end! There are ways to hide.
-
Absolutely, correct. Whatever it is that makes you forget to put the gear down, will also make you forget to do the checklist.
-
That's an odd one. I know there are a couple of set screws, but from your description, I presume it is "something else". Maybe you could post a picture, or two and educate us all. My carb is probably limited too. I'm sure my C will do 300 mph if I can just get that darn carb adjusted!
-
I agree. Wheel spin-up. If it stopped when you applied brakes, I think you found the cause.

Good point....instrument training makes one a more precise VMC pilot! The military teaches flying with reference to visual, instruments, and formation.....each reinforces the other building on one another.
-
I am a proponent of adding the instrument ticket right away. Look at how the military trains pilots....there is no hiatus to allow VFR habits to harden. Moving right into flying by reference to instruments just makes sense. In my (limited) experience, the pilots who have the most difficulty with instrument flying are the ones who wait. They have a lot of difficulty "letting go" of the visual picture. They are also the ones who allow their instrument currency lapse because they are so much more comfortable VFR. Get that IR....the sooner the better! And the tailwheel endorsement.

Temporary Rough Engine At Cruise
Mooneymite replied to Hawth200's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Absolutely! Classic carb ice scenario. From FAA Flying Tips - P-8740-24: Pilot response to warning signs should be: Apply full carb heat immediately (may run rough initially for short time while ice melts) All those folks who say they've never experienced carb ice with their O-360 need to add one word: "Yet". -
Hmmmmm. That's not out of a hangar that has all sorts of cool airplanes/war-birds is it? Wiley Sanders' place?
