  1. A POH will give you the performance to expect. There are a million opinions posted in this forum suggesting what to look for and what to avoid.....use the search function. Transition will depend on your proficiency.....I recommend you find one to rent with an instructor and invest a few hours getting an idea. Many more opinions to follow............
  2. Yes Yes Yes The XM shows you what was..........usually up to a few minutes ago. You have to interpret movement of the depicted weather, but I find it extremely accurate and useful. By filing....you are in the system, and you can always request a higher altitude to get on top or request slight deviations to go around something. You can always cancel if you don't like your clearance as long as you can maintain VFR. As to your first question, you can, but there are some that you shouldn't fly into......if at all possible. My opinion only......
  3. All of you "experts" used whatever info you chose to use. in your own purchases of an airplane. If you want to buy an airplane with........damge, maintenance,or repair history......then do so. If you want to use particular info to disqualify a purchase....then do so! Stop trying to convince others that your own opinion is fact and that everyone else should subscribe to your opinions. Just sayin'..........
  4. Quote: mschmuff Ok folks, I need some advice. I am looking at a '69 F in NY - it's on trade-a-plane. He is asking $43,900. Engine is solid and just had a new crankcase because the old one developed a crack. So new bearings as well....so some fresh internal parts....assume TBO+ should be no problem to achieve. Good mods but needs an IFR GPS.....comes with a 396. Brittain auto pilot probably needs servicing. Here's the catch - undocumented damage history from 1976. 432AE - you can google it. Runway incursion. There is a log book entry clearing it to fly to another airport "only" less than 30days after incident. But no record of a repair. Is this a deal breaker? It's had 36 annuals and a new engine since. If it's not a deal breaker what is a fair price? Thanks
  5. I am from the camp that thinks the IR should be mandatory. Aside fro allowing you to fly in weather, I believe it absolutely makes you a better VFR pilot as well. I routinely file IFR, even on severe clear days. Many moons ago.....I was told by a crusty old retired navy and airline pilot......that the IR separates the men from the boys. I tend to agree. Just sayin'
  6. I have a 696 yoke mounted and I have no issues. I am 6' so the panel is not obscured in any way. But that's just me..........
  7. The Arrow has a built in headwind that even the best A&P cannot uninstall. The Mooney not only cruises faster, but climbs and descents are much faster in a Mooney. The Piper doesn't have that awesome looking tail section either......just sayin'
  8. Quote: mschmuff Yeah I saw that turbo in TX - way out of my price range....As for the "E" the corrsion scares me..a lot! It will usually be only me flying it but I will take the wife and daughter places. I don't want to limit myself...and my daughter will eventually grow! I also notice there are a ton of "E"s for sale so resale may be more of an issue with an "E" than an "F". I'll probably still go down and look at it...The guy definitely put some money into it.
  9. Look into 2RR.....River Ranch Resort
  10. Right next to Sun is CJ Cannons......an excellent restaurant for breakfast and lunch.
  11. Quote: dmc What does a 76 model have over say a 67 model?
  12. Phil has worked on 4 different Mooneys that I have owned. I recommend Phil. He certainly knows Mooneys and he is a pilot as well, which in my book, is a huge plus.
  13. Find the plane you want and make your offer. I don't see prices going up.......and if you buy right, and they do go down a little.....you still won't be in a bad spot. If you are going after an F model, I would find a 76 model........if you can swing a J model, I think you will be much more satisfied. If you buy more plane than you can manage or afford, it will take the enjoyment out of your flying. You can find a "vintage" plane that has been severely upgraded.......and that is to your benefit. The reason you find so many Mooneys out there with gear-ups is because in most cases the plane was traveling faster than the pilot. I am from the camp that prefers the NDH endorsement. I spent many months looking for the plane that I have. If you find a plane that you want....negotiate.....it IS a buyers market. My opinion only!
  14. 2000' is do-able in a Mooney.......but no room for error. As far as asking prices.......make offers! When I was shopping for my J model, I discovered a lot of "optimistic" sellers. I made several offers on different planes and one person accepted and I fly a 201. Be patient and use diligence and educate yourself as to what you are shopping for.
  15. I agree with most everything said. I have had both. I prefer electric ......for me........manual gear is too dated.
  16. I did teach a lady to fly in her own Mooney 201 Turbo Bullet..........I don't recommend a Mooney to learn in....it is not as forgiving as a Piper or Cessna. I would suggest that you rent till you have your license........a low wing such as a Piper Warrior. My opinion only!
  17. Coming out of a Cherokee 140 and into a Mooney.....you may need to visit the NASA training center for transition training. I have owned a C model and 2 F models. As shortbodies go, there are certainly more C models out there than there are E models. The E will be faster than the C. I would look at the F models as well, while you are looking at C and E models. Pricewise, you have more options in the C model.......but that extra 10 inches in the F model sho is nice to have. Good idea to do your IR in a Mooney My opinion only!
  18. I say RESEAL!..........I also fly ROP!
  19. I sent you a PM
  20. A major OH is probably going to be more than $30K and I would expect at a minimum of a $10K annual........it ran out in 2010 which means last annual was in 2009. Un less you can steal that airplane.........there are others!
  21. Call Phil Jimenez.....PJ Aircraft.....he is located at KAVO but he may even know the airplane. As the buyer....you choose your own shop for prebuy. If it is a Scott Macdonald plane, Scott probably knows Phil. 954-868-3319 There are many on this forum that can vouch for Phil.
  22. Quote: allsmiles This post regards pilot preflight negligence and deficiencies. Running out of fuel is not a preflight deficiency per se. However pushing/pulling the airplane around by the prop is considered negligent.
  23. Quote: HopePilot I was pushing the plane back yesterday (tow bar and hand on cowl), and heard a gurgling sound. I had just flown and the plane was hot. Was that oil?
  24. I use Travers and Associates
  25. I for one, am not the least bit paranoid about engine failure. Shit happens! All anyone can do is excersise diligence when taking care of their aircraft, and following recommended maintenance procedures, and being prepared for the possibility of a situation. Common sense plays a big part as well. I fly at night. I fly over water. I fly in IMC. I support a Mooney mechanic! I am more worried about being hit by by an errant driver in a car than I am about an engine out. But that's just me.......
