Quote: aerobat95 Well I am looking at the tail mods next. Mooney Mart has a 201/212 kit that looks intersting so I was thinking about that. I probably could just get the mods from Lasar or SWTA though. I was also considering the flap hinge covers. Reguarding my previous mods I am very very happy. My plane has the lower cowl mod, oil cooler relocation, flap gap seals, wheel well liner, and the 201 windshield. With these modifications I am consistantly seeing 155-157 KTAS in the 7500-9500 ft altitude range. I have taken now a trip from San Antonio to Enid, two trips from Enid to Columbus, MS and back, and multiple trips up to the Wichita area and each time I see the same TAS on the same fuel flow. One of the things I am also considering is the M-20 Turbo Kit....right now they are selling for 29K....its alot but it would be a whole new airplane that would be able to cruise above the majority of weather at a respectable 180 KTAS. So who knows....

Quote: fantom That looks like a nice prospect. Phil in Avon Park (954-868-3319) knows Mooney inside out, and could do a PPI for you for a lot less $ than Daytona, which I believe, is a good shop also. Regarding the broker on the west coast of FL, life is just too short for that misery, IMHO. A short parable: The little boy was walking down a path and he came across a rattlesnake. The rattlesnake was getting old. He asked, "Please little boy, can you take me to the top of the mountain? I hope to see the sunset one last time before I die." The little boy answered "No Mr. Rattlesnake. If I pick you up, you'll bite me and I'll die." The rattlesnake said, "No, I promise. I won't bite you. Just please take me up to the mountain." The little boy thought about it and finally picked up that rattlesnake and took it close to his chest and carried it up to the top of the mountain. They sat there and watched the sunset together. It was so beautiful. Then after sunset the rattlesnake turned to the little boy and asked, "Can I go home now? I am tired, and I am old." The little boy picked up the rattlesnake and again took it to his chest and held it tightly and safely. He came all the way down the mountain holding the snake carefully and took it to his home to give him some food and a place to sleep. The next day the rattlesnake turned to the boy and asked, "Please little boy, will you take me back to my home now? It is time for me to leave this world, and I would like to be at my home now." The little boy felt he had been safe all this time and the snake had kept his word, so he would take it home as asked. He carefully picked up the snake, took it close to his chest, and carried him back to the woods, to his home to die. Just before he laid the rattlesnake down, the rattlesnake turned and bit him in the chest. The little boy cried out and threw the snake upon the ground. "Mr. Snake, why did you do that? Now I will surely die!" The rattlesnake looked up at him and grinned, "You knew what I was when you picked me up."

Have you guys ever considered Cedar Key for a fly-in destination?

Check out LASAR or SWTA first.......just my opinion.

I have the Garmin 696 and I get the $54 a month XM WX service. Hasn't failed me yet. Prior to the 696 was a 396.......no issues. With the portable GPS, you still have the option to take the WX with you if you are doing a trip in your car.

Newb - 196 mph possible in SWTA mod F ?
gregwatts replied to garytex's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
That does seem very optimistic. That would make your F model faster than my 201. -
I have owned this J model for only a month.....but I have owned a Mooney of some sort for approx. 17 years. I am working my way thru the Mooney alphabet.

Re-position vent window air scoop
gregwatts replied to omega708's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
It should just be a narrow adhesive strip. Carefully peel it off and use some "Goo Gone" to clean off the extra adhesive. -
Mooney flying for Christmas or New Years
gregwatts replied to MooneyMitch's topic in General Mooney Talk
I just saw on CNN, that santa has his reindeers flying ROP! Imagine that! -
Quote: Dougflyer71 Thanks for the posts. I'm 6'6" most of leg. 230lbs. I sat in a m20c a long time ago(before kids). I thought it was quite comfortable. But I have a family now and would like to see how much room is behind the seats in the medium body models. Newer long body is out of budget. Also, even though I sat in a Mooney I never flew in one.

Quote: jelswick Good grief. Can we cut Allsmiles some slack? I read through this thread and what he posted was his opinion based on feedback he'd received from I assume a reputable shop. If I hear information from a mechanic or shop that I reasonably believe might help someone on here, I'd share it and no, there's no guarantee that it is accurate, it's just sharing information we've received. The tone he was jumped on with looks inappropriate to the tone he was using and just makes what is an otherwise very entertaining and helpful site very frustrating. We get enough discord elsewhere without people bringing that here. Feel and share some cheer for the holidays people, please.

How to do new style panel in 64 M20E?
gregwatts replied to anAscendancy's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I did it with a 68 C model and it came out real nice. While you have the panel all undone, you might take the time to remove old bundles of wire that have been left behind the panel. I was able to remove about 5 lbs of wire out of mine. I bought my panels from LASAR. It is labor intensive but you will be happy. -
Try lube on the bendix starter.....you prolly have the old style starter.
-
When I had my 68 C model, I bought panels from LASAR. It was not a 201 style panel, but it was an upgrade. I think it came out to about half the price of an actual 201 panel. As far as being "worth it".....that is entirely up to you. You may not recoup the entire cost if you sell your plane....but you get to enjoy it while you own it. For my $$$$$ I would not go for the 201 panel........LASAR and possibly SWTA have a panel upgrade that won't rape your wallet. You keep the toggle switches and cluster guages. but you get your instruments in a more modern configuration. My opinion only!

Contract control towers targeted for cuts

Contract control towers targeted for cuts
gregwatts replied to GeorgePerry's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Quote: GeorgePerry That depends on the amount of traffic in and out of a particular airport. Some of these airports are downright dangerous without a tower......especially airports with a lot of training activity. Having flown out of airports such as SGJ or BCT prior to towers........where everything from ultralights with no radios to center of the universe jetjocks mix with barely speaking English student pilot.......I am thankful for towered airports. Try flying into LNA someday when the weather is nice..........will scare the hell out of you. -
Contract control towers targeted for cuts
gregwatts replied to GeorgePerry's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Quote: GeorgePerry http://www.aopa.org/advocacy/articles/2011/111216-contract-control-towers-targeted-for-cuts.html I personally welcome this move....Control towers at GA "only" airports don't offer any real increase in Safety or air traffic expediancy. Thousands of uncontrolled airports operate safely with only a unicom freq and Center control for IFR approaches and departures. AOPA is making an issue of the OMB recomendataion which I think is a mistake. They should embrace the change. Austerity measures are coming across the range of the Federal Government and DoD. Rather than swinging at every pitch AOPA needs to pick it's battles a little better. Fewer control towers = less federal oversight = more individual pilot freedoms. -
Quote: KSMooniac Those of you routinely using less than full flaps, I have to ask why? Using full flaps reduces the landing speeds, which in turn reduce the forces on the landing gear, as well as tire and brake wear. We pay the bills, so I wonder why any owner wouldn't want to maximize the life of consumable components like tires, donuts, and brakes.
-
Touch and goes are a training exercise normally done in training aircraft. It is hard on an airplane......you are paying the bill, so have at it! I rarely ever use full flaps....if I have to go around, I am fairly close to take-off settings. In winds above 30 kts, I barely use flaps....if at all. But that is just me.............

I recently had my tach checked to find out that it was reading ~80 rpms high. The tech....at a reputable prop shop at LNA.....told me that it is not necessary to replace the tach. Apparently, most tachs have an error. If it bothers you and money is no object, replace it....but otherwise......just manage your power accordingly. My opinion only!

I, too, joined this forum for intel. I want to hear about the good and the not so good. Perhaps trashing Cole Aviation was a bit harsh, but if th OP had an issue, I am interested. All the same, if someone does an outstanding job, I want to hear about it. Good companies do make mistakes...and good companies rectify their mistakes. There are also bad customers. Some customers can never be satisfied. I would hate to see censorship take place on this forum. I personally have found useful info in between all of the expert opinions. Just sayin'..........

What are aerostar mooney's? 200,201 and 220?
gregwatts replied to anAscendancy's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Aerostar owned the company for one year....I believe.....1971. I owned N6817V which was an Aerostar 220......a 71 F model. -
Quote: dmc Another question. Is it really that hard to transition to a complex? Is lowereing and raising the gear really that difficult? How about the prop? Or is the Mooney just more difficult to fly?
