  1. The G3X is pretty low profile. It's not like the G5 that sticks out from the panel. Having flown the TXI, I wouldn't flush mount it given the option. I use the edge of the screen to stabilize my hand when using the touch screen.
  2. Great list of down sides to the Garmin. It's cheaper than the TXI system, but you give up a few things to get the cheaper option. I have a 10" TXI display (with the EIS) and I wouldn't not say that the screen is anywhere near too large. There's a lot of info on that screen. I'm not surprised by the limitations of the G3X system. Wide compatibility is desirable, but it's not free. The closes system certainly does give Garmin the ability to capture more dollars from the aircraft owner, but it also gives Garmin the ability to more quickly test the systems and reduces the cost to bring them to market. TXI or G3X- pick your poison- or go elsewhere and take your chances. I'm on the record of what I think is going to happen to Aspen. Great product 10 years ago when it came out- revolutionary. Today- it's not competitive. 12 months ago when I looked at new planes I considered an Aspen the same as King AI/HSI. In the future- my money is that most buyers think about Aspen equipped airplanes exactly the same. Doesn't change the capability of an aspen equipped airplane, but I do expect it to change the desirability.
  3. Who is going to buy Who? What would you pay for Aspen as a company right now? Great product 10 years ago. Now? competing against the certified G3X? If you were aspen, what story would you tell to raise capital to buy Avidyne? If you're Avidyne, why would you buy Aspen? These are both second tier companies (nothing wrong with that) in a very poor competitive position. They have great products on a stand alone basis, but they're not integrated. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of the technical side can correct me, but I suspect there isn't more opportunity for integration by putting the two companies together. Dynon has room. If they can get their STCs together there will be room for more players. Dynon has an integrated system; integrating Avidyne navigators into Dynon Skyview would be interesting. Aspen, JPI, EI, others- they're now in a very poor competitive position for any single engine piston airplane sales. We'll see what happens for twins and other larger aircraft.
  4. That's in the ballpark of what I paid for a GFC600 install. I suspect they don't want to do the job at this point. My shop installed the servos in ~2 days; I would expect the GFC500 install to be about the same. My plane was already disassembled, but still, your number is really high. I would expect you to be in the 20K range for 4 servo install. I'd get another quote.
  5. Paging @Jetlag. I suspect he has some information he can share about this. My money is that he's been under an NDA so he may need to wait until Garmin releases him, but hoping he can share more about his GFC500 install and recent flight with the new equipment. Edit- OKAY.. now we know he has something to share- King equipment in the classifieds. This is going to be good...
  6. Agree. Stick a fork in Aspen.
  7. I believe the radios are just LRUs. It's not clear if the remote radios are part of the STC or not, but either way it's pretty cool. I have the TXI in my panel. I saw something coming- I actually have all the wiring done to plug and play the G3X on the right side of my panel.
  8. “Low” end glass panel that works with a GFC500. Closed system architecture.
  9. JPI used to offer the 830 as an upgrade. They'll sell the display without the sensors. The other alternative is to buy a display that was pulled out of another airplane for upgrade. Shameless plug- I pulled a JPI700 out of my Bonanza. It's my understanding that the instrument is the same- 700-->800 is just more sensors. I don't know if it would need to go back to JPI for configuration.
  10. I agree. I put an engineer hat on and I agree with you. When I put a politician's hat on...
  11. It’s my understanding, from posts in web forums only (i.e. no real knowledge), that Garmin is able to work in house to develop new STCs without waiting on the FAA. From news reports, it sound like Boeing has a similar capability that Boeing used for the 737 Max. We’ll see if the investigations change these arrangements with the FAA and slow the progression of development. I can’t blame the FAA for making changes and slowing down progress in light of the accidents of the 737 Max, but I hope the loosening of regulations for GA don’t change based on what Boeing appears to have done with the Max.
  12. I'm shocked that it's 75 lbs heavier but you would know.
  13. My guess is that the G3X doesn't get certified, but there's something new coming down the path that will replace the G3X. My guess is that the new system will end up with a closed Garmin architecture that in effect ties the airplane to Garmin equipment. In other words Garmin PFD, G5 backup, GFC500 autopilot only, and the big one- it's only compatible with Garmin navigators- I believe using the MapMX data format would do the trick.
  14. for 2 people the G3 turbo FIKI is fantastic. If you want the useful load increase you have to step up to a G5. I needed the useful load, wanted turbo and useful load. The A36 was a better fit for me as the FIKI wasn't on my list. Better weather in TX than Michigan.
  15. I look forward to seeing pictures of your SR22...
  16. Good looking airplane. Upgrading? What are you looking at?
  17. I would buy that in a heartbeat in Dallas. If I were moving to Denver I would pull the trigger on an end unit immediately. I’m sure there are land lease, taxes, and possibly HOA on top of the purchase price.
  18. I just turned 40. That day is probably coming very soon!
  19. I wear an Apple Watch daily. I also have a few automatics that I love. The Apple Watch keeps me in the loop with everything happening so I don’t have to keep my phone on me. Let’s me focus on family and I don’t worry about whether a client is calling, or if something is blowing up. It’s also handy to have that level of connection, but at the same time be unable to pop open a browser right quick and see what’s happening in the news or on mooneyspace. Helps me keep my focus on the right things at times. A little crazy? absolutely. Sad to admit publicly? Yep- no question. But it works for me, so I’ll stick with it. Regarding the battery- my 2 year old watch rarely got below 50%. Just got a new one with cellular connectivity and it typically is about 60-70% when I charge it at the end of the day. The battery is no big deal.
  20. They probably don’t know anything more than you do. Most large companies treat wide distribution of news to employees the same way as press release. People with a need to know have seen the products and the details, but the existence of a new iPad mini probably isn’t known by the guy who works in the visitors center. He gets his news from MacRumors the same way I do
  21. What part number? I have a KS 272A p/n 065-0061-13 that I need to sell. Out of a 28 volt airplane so I suspect it won't work but...
  22. I'd call DMAX and ask him if he has anything hiding up in his loft.
  23. Take a look at a beech debonair. If you buy one with the IO470 K (225 HP) engine it will be very similar in performance and price to a J. The 6 cylinder engine will likely be a little more expensive to own per hour than the 4 cylinder lycoming, but it would be within spitting distance. Edit- whoops- ovation/bravo not J. I’d take a look at a 210. If you want FIKI none of the 4 seat bonanzas are eligible for FIKI.
