Mooney down over New Hall Pass • Los Angeles
N9201A replied to DustinNwind's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
This is exactly what I’m saying. Sharing INFORMATION. Speculation or guesses aren’t information, and elevating either to the level of fact creates confusion and can create issues for others who remember casually reading it on MS but don’t readily distinguish between actual fact and someone’s guess. We can and must police ourselves. -

I agree, some would argue anything. But man, I hope that argument is wrong. Speculation, rumor-mongering and sniping are not why I’m here. MS gathers a wealth of expertise on myriad Mooney subjects and aviation generally. That’s all fact and expert opinion, and bringing all of that together in one place is tremendously valuable. There are also numerous friends and acquaintances I see occasionally with whom it is great to interact. Even if we only see each other once or twice a year, it’s great to connect. I am sure it’s too much of a burden to monitor every post. If zillion-dollar Silicon Valley companies can’t do it, how can MS? For those who snipe because they feel they can offer neither knowledge nor expertise, try a joke now and then. Share your personal experience. Like all of us, continue to build your knowledge base and expertise. But above all, take the guessing, sniping and rumor-mongering back to Twitter, FaceBook or wherever middle-schoolers gather nowadays. -

There is a good chance that an overwhelmed pilot won’t hear anything a controller says. In times of stress, our situational awareness drops as our focus narrows significantly. That’s why it’s important to focus on what will keep one alive: “Aviate, Navigate, Communicate.” Perhaps a calm voice reminding one to “fly the airplane” can be helpful, if it is heard. Van Nuys is one of the busiest GA airports in the country, and its controllers are top-notch professionals. This transcript reflects that: As the controller recognized a pilot in distress and tried to talk him back to this basic—just leveling the wings as asked might have saved lives here. It’s a tragedy for the lives lost and families impacted, but let’s not forget the impact on the controllers working the situation who had to watch an airplane leave their screen, knowing humans were imperiled, and trying to do whatever they could to help. Those in the tower that day will also carry some heavy memories of this incident. Speculation and sniping doesn’t add any value and diminishes the collective professionalism of the thoughtful and dedicated pilots here. Let’s wait for the NTSB to do its job. -
If the facts I heard are right, S Korea has 1/6 of our population and has tested 25x the people we have. I’ve not heard anyone authoritative on what percentage of the population already had the virus and didn’t know it. Is the “flattening the curve” strategy needed if some portion of the curve is behind us?

Not recently, but I’ve Mooneyed into KLAS and KSFO. I’m sure current fees and fuel fees are listed on ForeFlight. -

Love of flying in the Time of Coronavirus

Just heard today about three people I know well in three different states, each of whom has just tested positive and is now self-quarantined. Unfortunately, in each case, they’d either just come from, or were headed home to, a different state. This situation is aggravated by schools shutting down and sending college kids schlepping home suddenly. It seems if CV hasn’t happened near you yet, just stand by! -
Simply, changing the direction away from another plane most effectively in close is done with yaw, not bank. It’s immediate and also allows you to keep sight of what you’re trying to avoid instead of going “belly up” (and therefore blind) to it. We are taught from student days that planes turn by banking, but this is least effective and responsive when in close, as well as dangerous. So stepping on the rudder away from the threat is best—in our light GA planes. Bunch of published materials on mooneycaravan.com in the “training” section, look at “blind” or emergency procedures. Or go for a ride with a pair of qualified form pilots, it can be a lot of fun for those with whom it resonates, and you really get to know how to fly your airplane.

WELL DONE! There are not a lot of things that should be done instantly in an airplane, but avoiding a collision is one. Only by practicing emergency procedures can we build the muscle memory to execute those types of things. Glad you obviously devoted enough time to it to avoid becoming a statistic. Don’t forget an ASRS report. You may even want to call the tower once you’ve had some time to think about it and try to prevent a reoccurrence, they may not realize how close you got.

Has anyone had a complete engine failure ?
N9201A replied to spokewrench's topic in General Mooney Talk
Years ago, I attended a seminar by an NTSB investigator who shared some really interesting facts about survivability of forced landings and crashes where the pilot never stopped flying the airplane. It was eye-opening, and it completely changed how I thought about losing an engine. The sole purpose of the plane is as a structure to absorb energy until stopped. Before taking off, decide that when the engine quits, the hull belongs to the insurance agency. Don’t try to “save” it. He shared multiple examples of pilots who shed energy landing on baseball fields or even a tennis court, anything clear with stuff that the wings could catch on and decelerate at a G rate that was survivable. He compared this to fatalities resulting where pilots passed over similar spots trying to stretch their glide to a road and stall/spun, or found too late the road to be obstructed by wires. It was contrary to what I had learned as a new private pilot and quite eye-opening. To this day I’m surprised more isn’t discussed about this. -

Naw, not even close. Limp-wrested hysteria is paying a doctor to say you have heel spurs to avoid military service when your country is at war and your peers are volunteering or getting drafted. THAT is hysteria! -

Yes, if they don’t know better than to steer clear of us, that’s THEIR problem! How dare they gather in public, use mass transit, or expect their fellow citizens to extend a modicum of common civility and basic prophylactic health measures recommended by scientists who’ve spent their careers studying for such an eventuality... When is that next rally? I’m feeling a little phlegmy, but what the heck... -

Do those ruby slippers work for CNN evil liberal conspiracy stories AND FoxNews red state hysterical propaganda? Or do I need different colored slippers? Maybe one for each foot? I thought this was an aviation forum... -

If you don’t know what was in place in 2019, you won’t know what is different from what is in place for 2020. Every clinic attendee will understand and have to demonstrate implementation of the 2020 procedures. In addition, Operations has continued to refine our programs and policies, and there will doubtless be more learning in 2020. Finally, attendees at the first 2020 clinic (many of whom were Bonanza, Piper or other non-Mooney pilots) participated in a detailed and interactive dissemination of the 2019 incident. This presentation and discussion is also planned for each regional clinic, as well as sometime in Madison before the flight to Oshkosh. It’s possible this will also be a forum presentation at Oshkosh. A lot of good learning was had that can be shared.

Besides the “training” pages of mooneycaravan.com and b2osh.org, please see FFI.aero, flyfast.org, and flyredstar.org. If you’ve had military formation training, you’ll recognize much of the material. Feel free to PM for details or to connect to someone in leadership near you. If you’re local to a clinic stop by, visit with us in OSH (the Caravan tent in the North 40 hosts a well-attended MooneySpace social), and we also practice with B2Osh folks in many areas of the country as well.

Asked an acquaintance this once under similar (albeit uneventful) circumstances. His response: “If I get in trouble, l can always just pull the chute.” That worked for him until he put himself in a situation the chute couldn’t help, night CFIT.
