  1. Just wait till avgas reaches 12$ a gallon while jetA stays at 4 A fee of few dimes per gallon of avgas might cover the turbine's landing fee or whatever it is they pay
  2. Would depend on the magnitude of the leak I think. I believe i have a leak, had posted in another thread. A high low test is on the cards his week. Mine runs smoothly LOP but at a higher fuel flow 9 gph at 8000 feet instead of 8.5 that it used to do before. And there is a lower than normal cyl 2 CHT but still above 300 F. So prolly a minor leak.
  3. Right .. So the leaky cylinder should run even cooler (CHT) than its brethren and i think there should be no valve damage because those reside in the cylinder head which is cool. This implies that one can run ROP for speed only if LOP operation is smooth and works fine first, at least in the IO360 .. Never thought like that.. Interesting
  4. Posts on a site hardly work, judging from the number of people who dont search forums i think a review system works perfectly well instead of a numerical rating. People can read the reviews themselves and judge emotional versus factual content. Case in point are restaurant reviews - highly subjective but statistics is on the restaurant's side. If an overwhelming number of people are positive, the business is doing something right. But reading those reviews you will also see a Lot of emotional content that you dont care about also ... Frankly the only difference between you and the big name tank sealers might just be their web presence? Add a few glowing reviews and details of how carefully the process is done and the business instantly becomes famous
  5. I understand the feeling, although my issue is with another industry. Problem is that no one knows what quality of work you do. Maybe we need an online ratings site where people leave ratings for work their A&P did. People can pick and choose the clsest a&p with good ratings at the correct price.
  6. If there is an induction leak, isnt it safer to run LOP instead of ROP. With rop and a leak you might get into the bad iperating region aka red box. But running LOP you'll only go further LOP. might run a bit rough but no harm done..?
  7. I called the airport and the line guy started my pre-heater without me having to go to the airport 8 hours before the flight. When I tried to tip him he refused jovially. I was new to the airport then. I later realized that he owns a mooney in the hangar right next to mine He is retired and just likes being at the airport ... Quite awkward but funny in hindsight But at other airports i tip for above and beyond service and also leave glowing reviews in foreflight comments section for that FBO - they deserve the business. I do not subscribe to the tip "just because" model.
  8. 1500 is low for any kind of IFR approach. Havent seen anything like that even in the flat north east. So probably a VFR into IMC incident
  9. I had the same issue and i was a tailwheel pilot before the mooney (decathlon). The part of tailwheel flying that helped with my mooney landings was looking out on the side at about 10 o clock - that gave me a good perception of height above runway. At this point i am holding the nose level and then once the runway appears close enough i transition to the flare and do what everyone is mentioning which is to look at the end of the runway past the spinner to gauge sink rate in the flare. This will get you down reasonably well This took care of the problem of when to start the flare. For your home field you can even put a little strip of tape where the edge of the runway shows up in the side window provided you are on center line. It will tell you about the angle and height above runway for the field and runway where you originally set the tape
  10. Excellent ! Thanks! Please let us know
  11. Where are you based? if you are looking for owner assisted annuals to learn about maintenance and also save some money - i did mine at autumn air in fitchburg KFIT. You have to book in advance because he is usually booked for 3 months or so. Not sure if the major MSC in norwood will let you do that. I had a pre-buy there too and was very impressed with their work too actually. Didnt end up upgrading to a 252 because of all the stuff they found. Have you also considered www.savvymx.com? Take a look at what they have to offer..They can recommend the good shops across the country and negotiate prices for you. I am not a member yet, becuase i am a new owner and i heard of them only recently, but i plan on becoming a member
  12. wow! thanks for the link. Hard to imagine maneuvering a heavy jet in there !
  13. Guys this exists - in Bedford, MA which is a 20 minute drive from my place and the prices are real. Here is the link: http://executiveflyers.com/piper-meridian/ I have flown aerbatic aircraft with them and basically for the expensive rentals they have very few customers - (think Extra 300 aircraft at 370 per hour - doesnt get rented much at all). So if thats true for this turboprop - I think scheduling a flight on this may not be too big an issue. However, the big thorn in the side is what is their minimum charge per day for the aircraft. Normally they charge 3 hour rental per day minimum - now that would be a real killer and I am sure thats how it is ... Otherwise its tempting to fly it maybe once every two weeks for currency and then occasional long distance trips. And also rent a small aerobatic plane for fun ... All my flying is recreational only - so it is tempting to me. If I had to fly 3 days a week for business or something - this would not come close to owning my own aircraft ofcourse. Previously I had never looked at rentals because nothing matches the Mooney's performance. This one now does - but at a high price.
  14. 1200 feet takeoff - 50 ft obstacle 1000 feet landing - 50 ft obstacle source: http://www.jetprop.com/content/specification-and-performance-comparisons
  15. 3 hour transition flight training - 25 hour ground training. Currency requirement 1 hour per month (I am making the currency requirement up - rest is true).
  16. First time trying to run a poll - hopefully it comes out okay. I am guessing this makes close to any sense mostly for Turbo-drivers (Bravo, K or Ovation guys)
  17. haha - both of us should pay attention to our jobs in order to make the payments I think too much time spent loitering on the forums - lots of interesting bits to see. To the OP - my annual operating expenses run about 15k for the J model for about 100 hours - including annual and everything (and no loans) Here is a thread with some break down of the operating costs different people have: http://www.mooneyspace.com/index.php?/topic/4392-annual-operating-budget/page__hl__+operating%20+cost#entry56093
  18. dang this thread is depressing - I am going to sell my J and get a race car. I do agree with what you guys are saying though You are indeed buying a 300K airplane - whose parent company is bankrupt and not producing regular parts.
  19. maybe there is leak between the windshield and airframe interface - sorry dont know what I am talking about - but maybe water is leaking in there ..?
  20. I always like harping on the LM designation of the 201 when not talking to ATC... M201-LM because its the Lean Machine which sounds very cool !! (to me at least ) - I guess its technically a 205.
  21. Worked for me on my PC and ipad too
  22. thats good news !
  23. No you are right - there is no FIKI for the rocket.
  24. I fly a J model (non-turbo). If you are running LOP - you can oversquare all you want too - use it in the descent to get RPM down to 2000 or less if the engine permits and keep a high MP and the cylinders toasty and save on gas.
  25. Moderators: can we pin this to the top of the forum listing? The posts here have great links for LOP operations !! Thanks
