Vibration in Flight. Prop Won't Stay Balanced
Steve Dawson replied to LarryAZ's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
That's what mine did, At one time I put a dial indicator on the spinner and had it dialled in very close to "0" however even after doing that it would start to vibrate after a RPM change. Not sure what model your prop is, so maybe check with shops like Don Maxwell who has a large stock of parts. They had one for my Bravo. -
Vibration in Flight. Prop Won't Stay Balanced
Steve Dawson replied to LarryAZ's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Check with a installing a different spinner. I had a new prop on my Bravo with the old spinner, Could not get rid of the vibration problem similar to yours. -
Thanks for this @Hank, as well as your previous post that contained exactly what I was looking to gain from this post. I have actually visted Guntersville AL right up the road from Huntsville and the people at the airport as well as a few in town at local shops were lovely. I'm not saying I expected otherwise, but of all places in the US that I would expect to feel like a fish out of water, AL is one of them. I take part of what I said before back, I've been to Guntersville a few times and the people at the FBO are great. Beautiful town, lots of high tech jobs (space and DoD industries) and a few of the best golf courses around. Gunters Landing is a challenge.

I've heard nothing but good things about Paul and they must be true because he's always booked up for at least a year. When I bought my Bravo it had been abused and leaked profusely.(The tanks wouldn't hold more than 1/2 tank) Paul couldn't do it for at least a year so I went with Edison in Florida (WetWingologist-East) since he was available in a couple months and I couldn't wait. The funny thing was that Paul phoned me with a cancelation just after I picked up my plane. Don't be surprised if it costs a little more also. I had the fuel drains and the rivets replaced at the lift points at the spar because they had worked loose. I believe these are items that can't be seen until the tank is opened up. I forgot what the costs were but I was happy that he looked after any future tank issues

M20K Encore - Purchase advice & Cockpit feel for tall pilot
Steve Dawson replied to MartinN3's topic in General Mooney Talk
Great information on this post. -
There's a J in the hangar across from me that's going to be available shortly. It doesn't have Garmin glass however it has a low time engine (I believe it has approximately 400-500 hours TSOH) and is in very good condition. The owner doesn't hesitate with maintenance, We use the same mechanic. Tanks have no leaks. Message me if you're interested.

EI CGR-30 C/P or single Garmin 275EIS?
Steve Dawson replied to gmonnig's topic in Engine Monitor Discussion
Personally I've not used a GI 275 in flight and I don't believe using a touch screen is a bonus. I haven't found the the total list of functions for the Garmin and I don't believe it compares to the EI CGR 30C. Either way you still have to go through multiple screen pages to get to your other information. I do like the 275 EIS front page because I could get a the TIT in a bar graph beside the other EGT. On the CGR C you could configure the second screen for more functions compared to the Garmin. For me I do like that I can have annunciator lights showing 6 running functions. I'm using mine for speed brakes, strobe, nav and landing lights, prop ice and pitot activation. Another issue I have is the cost for the Garmin which is approximately $3K more. I've had two aircraft with JPI's and even though I liked them, the form function is OK but their service is very poor. Here's the CGR 30C list: CGR-30P Instrument CGR-30C Instrument EDC-33 Engine Data Converter Primary Replacement RPM Primary Replacement Manifold Pressure Primary Replacement Fuel Level (up to 4 Fuel Tanks) Primary Replacement EGT/CHT Bargraph Primary Replacement Oil Pressure Primary Replacement Oil Temperature Primary Replacement Volts Primary Replacement Amps Primary Replacement OAT Primary Replacement Fuel Flow Fuel Remaining and Fuel Used GPS/Fuel Flow Data Engine Time and Tach Time Flight Timer Local Time and Zulu Time Pilot Programmable Checklists Other Options (No Charge) Primary Replacement Fuel Pressure Primary Replacement Hydraulic Pressure Primary Replacement TIT Primary Replacement Carb Temp or OAT Second Amps Measurement On Screen Annunciators Return Fuel Flow Transducer (Pressure/Carb) G-Meter Horsepower -
EI CGR-30 C/P or single Garmin 275EIS?
Steve Dawson replied to gmonnig's topic in Engine Monitor Discussion
I just sent in my spec sheet to order an EI CGR 30C. They're less money than JPI and definitely Garmin and have more functionality and gives more information. One of the reasons was their ability to show items such as speed brake and pitot activation lights in a choice of colours. -

Aspen MFD with EI CGR engine monitor
Steve Dawson replied to Steve Dawson's topic in Engine Monitor Discussion
You'll also pay more for a Garmin equipped used aircraft where the initial install owner has lost at least 50% of his original investment. I do like Garmin but two GI 275's are close but they haven't the same amount of functionality as an EFD 1000 Pro Max. If you're talking panel EFD's with a full panel Garmin or Dynon Skyview, obviously they have better functions and graphics on a much larger display but you're also committed to the rest of the Garmin/ Dynon/ family at a cost of $40-60K plus the cost of a GPS navigator. (Garmin or Dynon don't work with other autopilots) Plus there's signifigantly fewer fully equipped used aircraft for sale now. Aspen hits a niche -
Aspen MFD with EI CGR engine monitor
Steve Dawson replied to Steve Dawson's topic in Engine Monitor Discussion
Other than one time, just after I installed the MAX, and at that time I'd just landed, I haven't had any issues with my Aspen EFD 1000 pro MAX in three years and I fly quite a bit of IFR. I'd love a larger screen that has more options like a G3X but I'd have to change my great working autopilot (KFC 200) and spend $60K to replace what I have now. -

I understand where you're coming from. If you don't have the panel space and already have an MFD the Aspen/EI option makes sense. -
Aspen MFD with EI CGR engine monitor
Steve Dawson replied to Steve Dawson's topic in Engine Monitor Discussion
Dave the only pricing I have now are the approximate prices I received from Aspen and EI, which were both very helpful. The unlock from Aspen onto an existing MFD is ~$2000,00 and the equipment from EI is ~$4200.00. Note that there's additional costs for any extra sensors needed from EI. as well as the extra cost for an MFD is you haven't one now. I'll need the SV and AOA unlocked on the newly purchased MFD so they're half priced at $495 each. This is going from memory and a month ago so please check with Aspen and EI first on their costs. -
Aspen MFD with EI CGR engine monitor
Steve Dawson replied to Steve Dawson's topic in Engine Monitor Discussion
You'd think I have a finacial interest in these companies and in this system! I just think it's a great idea to have an EIS with some other handy MFD functions in the Aspen form factor. And it's great if you already have Aspen products. Another video -

I like the diversity and range of functions of the EI CGR 30C engine monitors since they seem to cover more information than any other engine monitors. Now they've partnered with Aspen Avionics so you can see all their functions on the screens as well as having some Aspen functions such as maps, AOA, SV ect., on the lower part of the screen. Does anyone other than myself think this is a good idea? https://aspenavionics.com/evolution-engine-instruments#:~:text=Seamless Engine Monitoring with Electronics, engine data converter and sensors.

1980 M20 K 231 with Merlyn and Turbo plus-- $139,900.00
Steve Dawson replied to Steve Dawson's topic in Aircraft Classifieds
This plane just flys great. Smooth engine and when flying without the autopilot connected you hardly need any control inputs. Recently flew 165 Knots true on 10.5 GPH with all CHT's below 350 deg F. Updating the ad to show a new price,- 20 replies

Apology For Stupid Q. about Canada NAV Fees
Steve Dawson replied to RonM's topic in General Mooney Talk
Nav Canada has been great for me, There's a lot you get for $25/quarter. What did you think of the fees at Billy Bishop? lol -
I've replaced my landing and taxi lights with the Whelen G3's that I bought from Jim Gallagher who is a sponsor here and can be contacted through MS. Great improvement, much less current draw (3.8 amps @ 14v) as well as having a very long service life. Not to mention they're less money than the Moon Beam balast alone. https://flywat.com/products/parmetheus™-g3 Contact information. https://mooneyspace.com/profile/13533-osuav8ter/ gallagheraviationllc@gmail.com

1980 M20 K 231 with Merlyn and Turbo plus-- $139,900.00
Steve Dawson replied to Steve Dawson's topic in Aircraft Classifieds
I've had a couple people ask so just thought I'd mention the following. Anyone in the US that's interested and noticed that the plane is located in Ontario, The plane has always been N registered (US and FAA registered and is just a matter of registering it in your name through the FAA. The same as if you bought a plane from within your state. Basically seamless.- 20 replies

Sold-Sidewinder for Mooney, Like New Condition
Steve Dawson replied to Bryce Dennis's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
I had one for my J and they're the best made. The buyer of my J wanted it so badly, he paid close to the full price of a new one. If I didn't have my plane for sale I'd buy it.- 1 reply
