Seriously approaching buying a new plane
glbtrottr replied to mkerian10's topic in General Mooney Talk
I’ve bought and sold a few mooneys over the years. I own a K model and an E model as I type this. I bought my first airplane at 19. I just got done typing something similar in another thread. - don’t be scared. Find the most paranoid mechanic to help with inspecting an airplane near where you are, and do an annual as a pre-purchase. If nothing catastrophic shows, you have a fresh and thorough annual to enjoy for a year. If not, you’re out the inspection cost- cheaper than owning a paper weight. - Mooneys aren’t as common or as easy to work on due to space and tolerance, but they’re not that unusual. Smaller clearances behind the engine, a tight space behind the avionics panel. The horn needs a good looking at. Check out the donuts. Elevator weights have an AD. Make sure the wet wings don’t leak. A mooney specific mechanic knows all the things to look for - specially if they fly. - don’t limit yourself to your geography. Many fine birds in sunny dry places, though mooneys seem to be in demand more than usual thanks to inflated gas prices - avionics are overrated. I’m of the opinion that most if not all mooneys came well equipped for IFR flight out of the factory. Yes, avionics shops are printing money thanks to Garmin and the Obama administration’s wonderful panic creation and mandating ADSB, but you don’t need to blow $100k to keep up with the joneses and tell everyone how many monopoly Garmin properties you have. A handheld and a nice portable work fine in a pinch, including foreflight or any recent Garmin EFB. Don’t feed the beast. This comes from someone that installs avionics and paints airplanes for a living Your budget is important also. I will have a J model for sale on the flight line next week, and a C model coming up. No need to wait to finish your training to buy one. Most aren’t that scary -
SWAPPING VACUUM-DRIVEN SPEED BRAKES FOR ELECTRIC ONES IN M20K
glbtrottr replied to 231LV's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
A friend here in California with a G model needed the clutch in his speed brakes replaced. - he’s an aerospace engineer and IA. Precise doesn’t sell parts anymore, opting only for $4000 as a flat overhaul fee. Need the little spring? $4000. For that much cash, it’s better spent learning alternate methods of speed management. I am all about supporting vendors, but seriously? No. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Looking for source of '80's M20J panel covering

Vinyl comes in multiple qualities. “Ultra leather” or other higher quality shaped material that has a better quality backing There are materials made with “repurposed leather” Then leather , full grain and top grain. Use 1/2 inch foam to give it some of its shape back. If you can’t get upholstery glue then use headliner glue or 3M 90. Lindsay + Hall Im SoCal has some great choice and are huge on inventory. I’ve been trying to get the rear seat cushions for split seats for a while. I don’t need them covered - they’re getting redone. I only need the aluminum piece which is oddly called a “headrest” since I have gotten bottom cushions. Hector wants $1100 for ratty old cushions with the insert… Are the inserts the same on a J and K model as they are in a bravo or ovation? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

How about capital punishment or life in prison without parole for government officials who embezzle or hurt the collective taxpayer through deception by greater than a certain dollar amount? Term limits? The idea of lifelong politicians making tens or hundreds of millions when they’ve never held a job besides government doesn’t pass my smell test or many others for that matter. I wonder if selfish interests contributed to the current situation…hmmmm Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Help! Avionics $***show - how to proceed
glbtrottr replied to goalstop's topic in General Mooney Talk
Ummmmmmgunnaguess this is DLK aviation - Cole doesn’t brag about their deep avionics bench. If I get stuck in GA or someone asks for a recommendation, this just sounds like waaaaaaay too much skeeze to avoid. Given the cost of installs and alleged size of the shop, I doubt the principals are hurting for money…and it looks like the owners did things on principle time and again and again. It takes a long time to build a good reputation…and a second to just toss it. This kind of crappy press I’d pay a bit more than the cost of a garmin unit to avoid…but who knows how they grow them folk in Georgia. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

You’re kidding, right? I worked for a multibillion dollar company for nearly 2 decades as employee # under 1000 to 70,000 upon acquisition- that did gobs of business with SVB, appreciated 90,000 percent, and then I went on to work at several startups propped up by SVB. Have a couple of IPO’s, a much larger number of acquisitions and failures under my belt. One particular group has been programmed to measure one a other by the virtue they show. Save the puppies, save the children, cure world hunger, let transgender people have special privileges in religious schools, save the homeless, criminal reform, give everyone “free healthcare, education and basic income”, basically right every wrong in the world by forcibly taking taxpayer money - and charging a handling fee as a politician overtly or covertly for making people feel good about being virtuous. Bankruptcy trustees have nothing on some local city councilmen. The big scam which was limited to a few geographies went national and global in the last dozen or so years. It’s always been there but it is now institutionalized and protected by courts. Dodd / frank created the big collapse but now people are saying it didn’t- if only we kept worshipping those two, all would be rosy. The gall… Japan? Try more like China. There is a difference between where we should go and where we are headed …Kids are being wholesale indoctrinated on the benefits of socialism, Marxism and communism. Plenty of social media pride by “educators” who’ve never set foot in Soviet Russia, haven’t lived in North Korea, who allege criticizing the CCP is racist, and dismiss Venezuela as a tiny country they can’t find on a map. But don’t get their pronouns wrong…. Priorities. Can you explain to them what a bank is? Short of how it works with Venmo to spend the money their parents give them, or how they got financial aid on time, they don’t care. A balanced budget? Great thinking, but California realized that providing free healthcare was even too big a scam to not be noticed since it was estimated at $400bn to give free healthcare to undocumented people, knowing full well the real cost would be in the trillions. And even in light of a budget shortfall, Gavin is considering reparations in a state that never supported slavery. Over $100bn will have been spent on the “bullet train” and California won’t own a train station, track or train…but progress is good and fast trains are sexy. People don’t want to accept that government money comes from the people…and every corrupt construction project that kicks back money to the approving politician benefits only the lawmakers and hurts the public. SVB has for a long time been a ponzi scheme along with Vc and PE pump and dump raiders who make money in creative ways all while raising the cost of all. We saw $7 and $8 dollar gas in California and things will never normalize now that the cat is out of the bag or the camels nose is in the tent. You like paying $8 due q carton of eggs at the store? But some people say we are living under the greatest administration in history. As others have said, it’s just the start. Makes me feel good to see more multi trillion dollar bills pass while China demands their balloon back that our government says isn’t theirs Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

And this is the key. “Any” entity. Entities that are specifically against our best interests. Entities that are foreign governments that despise our way of life. I’ve spent a few recent years in various college systems; if you’re in your 50’s and 60’s or later, the information people are demanded to learn and believe would make you enraged. Want to get a straight 4.0 in college? Piece of cake- sign up with Quizlet, studyblue, Chegg, and the answers to every test are all listed. The value of an A obtained through hard work is virtually nil. Proctoring? That Can be defeated too- teachers cheat everywhere and so do students- so patriotism and doing the right thing is relabeled as racism and hatred…hard work to buy our Mooneys has been overtaken by our children staying in our homes well into their 30’s and beyond. Understanding basic micro and macroeconomics? Nope - we have other priorities. And please, don’t look at the Fed, our government budget being balanced, the value of currency, supply and demand, or even ask how government pays for things - government has unlimited money and certain groups of people simply just make too much. We need to make sure everyone has free healthcare, free college and a regular government- supplied income. Cloward Piven, anyone? -

Having spent a couple of decades at a technology company that sold to a lot of startups, automakers, airlines and the like? I don’t buy “bailouts”. It’s just a scam to relieve you of your hard earned money. I’ll use a simple well known example- Solyndra. I mean, who couldn’t possibly want green energy, right? You’d be a Scrooge not to! Your wife of course knows you don’t want pollution for your grandkids, right? Let me send some guilt your way while I pinch your wallet. Feel familiar? I bet you could even hear my pitch and timbre sound like you’ve heard me before. After the big government cash infusion, the golden parachute and bonuses, the early outs, the earn outs and so on, the executive compensation package buyouts, the resulting pump and dump antics, the predictable bankruptcy, the “too big to fail” neurolinguistic programming to keep everyone on board till the last second as the moving trucks roll up, you shutter it. Then Elon Musk comes in to buy it for Pennies on the dollar with…government favors and subsidies- hello, Solar City! Did that feel good, Mister Taxpayer? Do you feel relief about the dividend your government paid you on such a brilliant bailout? Oh wait - no dividend? No payout? What happened to your wallet? Awwwww…you mean you weren’t in on the deal? Sooo sorry but Im not sorry… But they neeeded a bailout! Look at your own company! You didn’t build thaaat… -
Electronic logs including date of overhaul will help if pictures with whatever info redacted as needed. Pictures showing first logbook date also help. I don’t know that either TAP or Controller are as good a source as the forum. People on Barnstormers are certainly most often looking for a discount. I have found some really great deals on Craigslist. Most people shopping for mooneys don’t often know what a rocket, missile or mustang are- so be very specific about the rarity of your bird. Discourage brokers from contacting you. The most information you could provide visually about- *Paint type and date *Complete radio stack, seen and unseen *Engine overhauler, type and date along with most recent compressions *Pictures of the wingspar for corrosion visual inspection *Donut change dates *A whole interior picture with dates if possible and material *average amount flown in a year *Salient AD’s listed Tire kickers are a reality and a nuisance. If you list everything in the ad and refer them to it, your time will be saved. Good selling! I have a dollar for your bird if you’re interested Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

New to Mooneys, maybe looking to buy?
glbtrottr replied to concussion962's topic in West Coast Mooney Club
My first Mooney flight was on the ferry home of the 252 I bought 25 or so years ago. I was living in Manhattan Beach then. My ex at the time said the plane or me- I still have the plane I was based at Hawthorne for a long time- the plane just left Long Beach. I spend a lot of time in Chino, Compton and Brackett. I also have an M20E I’m bringing back from out of state. You can come along for a ride in my M20K one of these days. If I’m not mistaken one of the flight schools in Long Beach has a mooney though I forget the type. Some carriers want time in type, others want model specific - it all depends. Amusingly I just went through this when trying to insure the m20e - I’ve only got about 1500 hours in my m20k. I know an outstanding Mooney CFI -I/ A&P/ IA and former US Marine that owns a G model and doesn’t post on Mooneyspace. He’s based in Long Beach and May let you fly his G model for instruction or familiarization also. He’s been good ballast for me on occasion, and did a very thorough annual on my K model as well. PM me for contact info. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Doesn’t surprise me. Nicksons and diccionario are quoting 3-6 months out for case inspections - really? Speaking to then they don’t have enough staff to line bore cases fast enough. And we aren’t even talking about crankshaft inspections. Have you tried to buy cylinders lately ? Buying a runout plane and you immediately have to wait 6 months to a year to fly it ? Hmmmm not so much Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Lol you’d be surprised I still have some green white and gold labeled cans of original Imron that I’m saving to spray …come on down and we will shoot them. I’ve got 5 of my own airplanes to shoot in between customer jobs and fun project company is always welcome. We can grill some meat and have fun. Some of the ancient equipment from way back yonder is still used today. I have some Binks 2 and 2.6 gallon pressure pots that still use Binks 2100 guns along with some premier Iwata and Devilbiss guns. The single stage Imron is still pretty great today. I showed the price of a gallon of base coat to illustrate price to your point. Prices have skyrocketed. Retail white single stage Imron is still north of $400/500, and besides a pressure pot, you can still shoot it with 1.2-1.6 needles. I recently handed one of my painters a fresh Sata 5500 RP 1.4 gun (versus the pressure pot guns he usually uses for trim) and he was pretty stoked - but paint is paint and viscosity is still the same - you want something that lays down 1 coat east west with a north south cross coat that looks like glass Come on down…SoCal is sunny Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

An airplane is worth what someone will pay for it given the available viewers. I keep seeing E, F and G models constantly for as much as $180k or more. Is it my place to ask who pays that much? Frankly a $100k panel on a 60 year old airplane seems a bit much to me, but if it’s someone’s forever airplane, why not? I’ll gladly install it. SVB and others tanking may have an overall effect on prices - but i don’t think it will mean much on 172’s and 150’s and Cherokee’s - perhaps even 4 banger mooneys. I recently sighed in frustration when a local skeezy flipper got a j model fir $30k. Yesterday I spoke to the owner of an A model asking $25. I’ve bought other models cheap and sold them slightly below market. A Texas highway patrol offered this widow $8k for a flying late model 150; the widow was happy when I flew it away for $13k last month…all compressions were at 80 last week with a pretty thorough annual. An airplane is worth what someone is willing to pay for it given the available viewing purchasing market. When people willingly pay for $100k radio stacks and support inflated avionics installation and hardware costs, we have no one to blame but ourselves. The plane should fetch between a low $85-90k to $125k in my opinion. I have a 1966 m20e with a fresh coat of Imron, 2000 hrs ttaf, 5 spoh, 645 Sfrm w mud prop strike inspection which I’m debating on overhauling on principle, a gns430/pma7000, mx20, ADSB in and out- what should it fetch?

Just configured the HDX system I referred to with spruce at todays prices - $19k and change. Retail pricing 7 grand matters….not factoring any other discounts.

Like Baker Avionics stated, Garmin is getting waaaaay Disney proprietary and pricing. Decent product, but ugh. I despise their business practices. Avidyne is a fine product- I installed another one today. I also installed a 650 last week… The cost of the dynon is *dramatically* less. I genuinely can’t say the functionality is dramatically less by a mile. The install is certainly pretty intuitive and thorough. I may install one in my K model. I still cringe these days when I hear someone mention spending $100k on a GA panel. . Dual dynon HDX, EMS, comm, IFD550, backup AI, pma8000bt (he should have done 450), ADSB, transponder, autopilot, all under 40k… But with so many Garmin fan boys eager to give them and avionics shops money…
-
That’s awesome. I’m installing a dual dynon in a Lance with the backup AI/adahrs, Avidyne 550, pma8000bt, the dynon EMS, and a Trio autopilot since the dynon wasn’t certified for the lance. The shop that had this wasted a year on it originally and had no clue how to get it done (really???) Dynon is interesting since they create a network / hub and daisy chain a lot of their devices which include auto detection and pretty quick configuration. Each display gets a battery. The transponder is a rebadged TT22. Quiet as quiet could be. The noisiest thing is the Avidyne…lol. What happened to all the racket from all the gyros in the panel? Where is that heartwarming sound of the turn and ball indicator, combined with the flight director spin up humm, not to mention my trusty backup electric AI dance prior to caging? The harness for the 550 only took a couple of hours since it connects into the dynon via arinc429 instead of a million inputs and outputs. Absent the install of the trio servos and engine thermocouples, it should take me about a week total to complete all the harness work and config of the unit. Who knows? I May install one of these Dynons in my 252. I know…Don would say sacrilege. Now I understand why shops love to charge flat fees for installs instead of hourly rates…
