  1. Oh yeah, as tragic as this was, I'm just waiting for the first liberal media reporter, promoting their agenda will, bring up that the GOP forced Sequester was a possible reason the ILS was inoperative. Don
  2. The folks on this forum, especially with a lot of high time pilots, certainly are a lot better at discussing this than the talking heads on TV. I wish the media could just move on as they've beat this horse to death. They just love to sensationalize any aircraft accident. Had there been a train derailment or a bus crash with two fatalities, I doubt there would have barely a mention in the local paper. To give an idea how clueless some of these people are, I heard one explain that the "black box" would be able to tell them what the "altitude" was when they crashed. I'm fairly certain that it might tell them it was almost zero when their tail hit the sea wall at the end of the runway, but I'm just speculating. Don
  3. Thanks, I've not even thought about the side by side setup but it looks good in your panel. Don
  4. I love the night sky for boring holes, and up until a couple of medicals ago, my color blindness was not a huge issue. But now, the doctors have said that my feet have to be on the ground 30 minutes after sundown until I take the time to get a waiver from the FAA by doing a light gun test as well as read a sectional chart for them. Anyway, I didn't like the crazy sounds my brain thinks the plane makes at night so i've not really pursued the waiver. Don
  5. Thanks, I have a 64 C and the panel is a bit smaller and was concerned that i would not have enough room to center the HSI and AI over the yoke.
  6. Does anyone have a picture of their panel with a B/K HSI mounted in it. I was also curious if there is going to be space issues with the AI just above it? Thanks, Don
  7. When I'm at home, in the hangar, it stays where it stopped. Usually 10:00/4:00. I commute to work in my plane and store it in a community hangar with a bunch of "high-wingers" so I rotate it to a horizontal position so that there's no chance of them hitting my prop with a wing. Hopefully, they're not that close to me, but you never know. Don
  8. Okay, this poll isn't nearly as much fun as the "pottie in the sky" poll, but a good subject for me none the less as I've started working on my IR last year. I went with the old fashion method of starting with my CFII and flying when I had the time to devote to it. Well with business booming and little time to devote to classes and flying, I gave up on that approach. I'm now scheduled for a 10 day course in October where I've blocked out my days to devote to 100% getting it done. With 14 hours of hood time already, it may go quicker than the 10 days, but not counting on it. Don
  9. Thanks guys, if someone locates one, PM me please. Here is a picture of the opposite (green) lens and housing.
  10. Gatorade bottle with big enough hole? Speak for yourself. Okay, I couldn't resist, but this has to be the most fun I've had following a thread on an aviation forum, ever. Beech guys have nothing on us. I've always wondered what Charles Lindburg did on that long flight (and without an A/P). Makes it that much more of an accomplishment!
  11. I learned on my very first solo cross country, as a student pilot, that drinking a 16 oz Coke during my first stop would require an unscheduled landing at a crop duster's private grass strip one hour later. Flying my C150 into a 25 knot headwind, I was not covering a lot of country, so my options were pretty limited and making the next scheduled airport, without a pitstop, just wasn't going to happen. That said, I learned my lesson and have always try to limit sodas or tea to a minimum and take a bottle of water in the plane to hydrate with well into the flight. I've not given the #2 aspect a lot of thought, but now gives me one more thing to worry about as I reach my golden years. Don
  12. i've owned both, and the Mooney is hands down the better airplane with my only exception being the ergonomics between my 64C and the 68 Arrow that I had a partnership in. I've always felt the Arrow was just a bit more comfortable. Of course you need the additional comfort as is takes longer to get there than the Mooney. Don
  13. I'm in need of a red lens and the small metal wingtip housing for a 64 M20C if someone has one to sell. Thanks, Don
  14. Looks like a new side business for you. I have an extra set of yokes that I was looking to do the same thing to. What is the shipping address and price??? Also, 3M spray is good for sticking leather to anything.
  15. Can't wait to order my 6-8 seat Mooney Jet. Can't you just see a backwards tail on a business jet. I'll use it to fly to the nearest Mooney Restraunt and have a Mooney Burger.
  16. Don't want to de-rail the thread, but I think there are several Mooney drivers in and around San Antonio so if anyone wants to have an impromtu Mooney Pilot breakfast/lunch/diner one weekend, would be fine with me. I live in N. Texas, but commute to SAT area and keep my Mooney in PEZ south of SAT and stay here for two weeks at a time.
  17. You won't go wrong with either SAT or SSF. SSF is further from everything, but not that bad and not quite the hassle as the much busier SAT. Ditto previous comments on Landmark at SAT, just don't expecto to find cheap gas. SSF's tower was scheduled for closure, but not now. If you end up at SSF and hungry, there is a nice little Cajun Restraunt in the teminal.
  18. I'm scheduled to do the accelerated IFR course with PIC (Professional Instrument Courses) in October. I think it is a good plan although I've had concerns about the amount of information and flying done in a short time and the retention of that information and experience. I've got a lot of cross country time and have about 15 hours under the hood when I started my IFR training. With my busy schedule, this just seemed to fit what my plans were. PIC says that they have a high first time pass rate percentage (I think 90%) so I think its going to be a good fit for me. I hope it works out for you. Don
  19. All, I presently fly with my yoke mounted 495 on all my flights with my 1st generation iPad in my lap running Xwing. I also have a panel mounted KLN90B that will soon be replaced with a new 430W. I was looking to sell the 495 and purchase a new iPad Mini and yoke mount it. I will probably still hang on to the old iPad for its larger display, but may even keep it in the bag unless it is needed for backup. Has anyone ditched their 495/496's and done this without any regrets? Thanks, Don
  20. I've got an extra pair of vintage Mooney yokes that I was planning to upgrade and re-cover to swap out with my present set. The plan was to incorporate new PTT and A/P buttons along with fitting an aftermarket clock in the center. Since the old yokes are typical "skinny" yokes, I was planning to build up the the yokes somehow before leather covering to accept the clock and buttons to give a more modern appearance while not altering the yoke's base structure itself. Is this a "legal" alteration? Thanks, Don
  21. The price is certainly fair, but I'm one of the guys KSMooniac described that will continue to deal with the nuisance of the ECI on my 64C as I am saving up my pennies for my panal upgrade. Fortunately, I live 20 minutes by air from Bynum Props in Fort Worth. They charged me 180.00 last May for the ECI and let me take the shop pickup to lunch while they performed it. I would love to do away with the AD, but right now, if its not broke, don't fix it. I bet someone will come through with the cash, it just might take some time.
  22. My Instuctor told me once that if you leave the rotating beacon switched on after shutdown that you would never leave the master on after putting plane up for the night.
  23. Wow, talk about a thread that got off from the original topic!
  24. Small Business Owner - Yes Watch Fox News - Yes Able to manage my business and cut 2% without any fuss - Hell Yes Small business owners have always sacrificed to keep their businesses going INCLUDING working for months without pulling a salary from the till. I don't see any of our leaders, both Republicans and Dems as well the "Campaigner and Chief" volunteering their own wages. Keep Air Force One in the hangar and go to work. I agree that the manufactured "sky is falling" scare tactics are just that, scare tactics. Tomorrow, the sun will come up and life will go on just as it did January 1, 2000 when the world would come to an end. Don
