Best Combination of Speed and Efficiency
231Pilot replied to GaryP1007's topic in General Mooney Talk
The above post is not ProprAire, but me (201Pilot). Sorry ProprAire, I didn't realize MS had logged me in as you until I posted. Hope I didn't misrepresent your opinions :-) -

Quote: petterrjx Just received an e-mail out of my Mum. Her plus my dad want a new your kitchen and are following having a loan. I am just 26 and simply started a good IVA together with live conversant in them. My very own parents are typically in there Fifties and have white in color than vivid white credit data. They have do not ever missed installments, havent obtained any pre-existing debt (help you save for home loan), few a credit card with nil balances that are used however cleared in pay day. They've got never long been refused credit until now! These people applied through Santander who waived. Then employed with Sainsburys exactly who accepted but with a higher rate. The mum thought i would see if she could add on to the home loan but said these people couldnt understanding that there was some text with a 'bankruptcy warning' placed on their file. I have not doubt that this is just as a direct connection between me accepting an Individual voluntary arrangement. When I signed the Individual voluntary arrangement I had no idea it would affect persons in my family to be able to obtain http://paydayloanin1h.com'>quick payday loan? Halon Compass from Aircraft Spruce, 1.2 lbs of chemical (they offer a smaller one at .9 lb). I think halon is the kindest to avionics if you have an electrical fire and have to shoot under and behind the panel. Much better to put out the fire without trashing adjacent electronics. The smaller one is listed around $130, the 1.3 lb is around $180. -
In 2000 I ordered the kit and got the entire package. It was not worth the price, but I did learn a few things about Mooneys. I spent over 6 months finding the plane I wanted (a C), made it mine with paint and avionics upgrades. Flew it for 6 years before I got a J, flew it 5 years before I got a K. I still wish I could have manual gear and flaps again. Other than that, the K is just what I wanted. Mooney Mart's web site was fun to look at, called them once about a plane and they tried to convince me to buy a plane priced at twice the price ceiling I gave them. Ticked me off....always does when a sales person doesn't listen. I called All American and they helpd me find what I wanted and stay within budget. I have bought all 3 from them and never regretted a single transaction. Take your time and find someone who listens to what you want and what you can spend. You won't have any buyer's remorse.

Centerlines are nice....I try to hit them every time....but I don't. On a windy day you landed smoothly, no jolts, bounces, porpoises, or other exhibitions of poor form. I would take that on a windy day. Nice camera. I've been thinking about getting one of those for about a year. Now you've gone and made it tougher for me to not do it. Thanks. Quote: maropers It is also an unforgiving critic when it comes to ones performance review. I've uploaded one of my (ahem) good (ahem) landings (I was positive I was on center) but to my defense it was pretty windy yesterday.

2 months on the current one (1985 231), 4 years 11 months on the previous one (1982 201), and 6 years 2 months on the first one (1967 M20C), for a total ownership of 11 years 3 months (September 2000 - now).

I use WSI displayed on a MX20, and a Stormscope. The subscription for North America is roughly $50/month. Not a bad investment.

If you need or want the capability to go high, whether to deal with mountains, high DA, or low weather, get the 231. I have woned both, and the 201 is less expensive and complex. The 231 however, gives you more options to get there safely, if more expensively. If you aren't going high, don't bother with the 231, at low altitudes you won't be impressed compared to the 201.
-
The transition to complex isn't too difficult, it's the transiton to a fast, slick airplane that doesn't slow down like the C and P brands do that is a bit tricky. Most of us learn to fly in planes that slow down and sink with throttle reduction and Mooneys still like to fly fast. Planning ahead and learnig how to safely slow the aircraft is the key. If you don't get behind the aircraft you can manage your speed, and speed control is critical for safe operation of the aircraft. Mooneys have a reputation for being hard to land....not so if you control your airspeed. As for landing gear, the manual Johnson Bar is, IMHO, the simplest and safest system out there and will probably be in the planes you will be looking at. I wish I had been able to have the manual gear and hydraulic flaps in my J or in my K, but it isn't an option for the later models, which is a shame. If you can learn to fly an airplane, you can learn to fly a Mooney. I've owned three, and I haven't seen another single engine aircraft that I would rather fly.

Ditto to KSMooniac and fantom's posts. I just got my working drawings from the same designer they are talking about. He is good, and he is a class act! We spent about a month getting the design I wanted...he is a patient man. I am attaching a copy of the final scheme. My bird goes to the paint shop in January, I'll post pictures when she is done. -
I worked with the paint designer Fantom recommended, and he is excellent. I was torn between ArtCraft and Straube when choosing a shop, but went with Straube because of the costs involved in getting to and from ArtCraft (a couple of AMUs between air fare for me and fuel costs for the Mooney) along with the per day fee after completion until the plane is picked up. I do admire ArtCraft's work, but have seen Straube's work locally and it is good too. Straube has a good reputation and is close enough to make transportation costs insignificant and warranty work very close by. The plane goes in for paint in early January. I'll post pictures when I have them.

Pre-buy inspection...absolutely necessary?
231Pilot replied to jeckford's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Pre-buy is a must. My plane had just had an annual, but pre-buy at Maxwell turned up some items that needed immediate attention. A few other minor squawks also. The owner paid for items that affected airworthiness, I paid for the minor items I would have corrected after purchase. Maxwell is 1st class. The money was well spent. -
Beautiful.
-
Stick with the C. It would take many AMUs to upgrade the panel and do the OH on the J. If you are looking for more speed and reasonably modern avionics, there are affordable J models out there, but if you are going to upgrade, find a plane equipped the way you want it, don't buy a fixer-upper, fixer-uppers get to be very expensive.

Once again great weather during the work week, ugly forecast for the weekend. Winter storm watch with snow Friday and Saturday....might get to fly Sunday, might not. -
It would have to be the M22 Mustang.

I would ask Maxwell or Lasar. They would probably be able to steer you in the right direction.

Prospective Mooney buyer in need of advice
231Pilot replied to NotarPilot's topic in General Mooney Talk
The condition of the landing gear biscuits alone is indicative of the maintenance /lack of maintenance that this aircraft has received. I would expect to have to invest at least as much as the asking price to thoroughly inspect and then repair the visible and hidden discrepancies, cosmetic issues and possible avionics upgrades to make this plane acceptable. It might cost a lot more than that once you find all the squawks. -

So far I have purchased three Mooneys: a 1967 M20C, a 1982 M20J, and a 1985 M20K, none has been without it's maintenence costs, none has been a nightmare, all have been a joy to fly. On the first two, there were never any major maintenence issues, but I did spend money on avionics upgrades that were not cheap. Tthe third I have owned a little over a week, and incurred a few costs when I had some extra work done at pre-buy. I did buy through a dealer...all three times and I was treated fairly. Yes they are in business to make a profit, just like the rest of us, and these guys have made their living on repeat customers like me because they have never misrepresented anything (to me) and they have stood behind the aircraft (replaced or repaired equipment shortly after purchase...paid for repair of transponders on the 67 and the 82, and repaired autopilot on the 82). Allsmiles, I know you and Greg Watts don't like them, but Jimmy and David at All American have treated me well over the last eleven years and I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a Mooney. I like them as dealers, I like them as people, and I consider them to be friends. The planes (even when they were new) won't be perfict, but they won't be misrepresented either. -
