  1. mooney does not make the switch , find a switch that has the same electrical specs and fits and any (reasonable) IA will sign it off ... Also , this probably will fall under user manufactured parts... That is how all the other defunct aircraft companys aircraft are still flying under standard category certificates.... If not, get to know your local FAA , and familiarize yourself with the terminology... IE "Field approval"
  2. Thanks for the input , that was the nest step , tried a rheostat but it didnt work , and radio shack stinks for semis any more .....Will let u know thanks Alan
  3. My ammeter barely reads a charge or discharge , I bead blasted the shunt and all the fasteners and wire ends attached to it... When I load the shunt electrically the microvolts for the estimated load are in line with the specs on the shunt..(60 amps 50 millivolt) I checked the resistance of the wires to the guage and it is negligable .. Has any one had the instrument rebuilt with good results , any suggestions I like the strip guage and would like to keep if possible...
  4. You can cheat the compression tools by putting the weight of the airplane on the gear , just remember to put the collar of the nosewheel on with the hole for the bolt closer to the top ... If not the steering will be impossible..... Also you definitely have to grind off the corners of the castings as outlined in the bulletin... Also if you dont want to kill yourself putting in the retract springs , you can expand them by putting a roll of quarters in between the spring coils , just make sure you get all the quarters out of the wing when you extend the gaer and they all fall out....
  5. Hey Scott , I generally run about 25 rich of peak just to be on the safe side , (I am not injected)
  6. I spent a huge amount of time on my b model with the same problem... Here is what we found.... After disassembling and cleaning and and lubing the jack screws in the tail and the wheel , we still had the same problem ... It ending up being a stiff universal joint in the tube up near the trim wheel assy , when we lubed up and freed the u joint the trim was fine ...Wasted a lot of time on that one , hope this helps!!
  7. Take the prop off ( you have to anyway to replace it) Dial out the flange , The runout spec is huge most strikes do not bend the crank beyond specs ) Than you remove the mags , Vacuum pump and filter block... Remove the accy case , check the accy gears with dye penetrant , Replace the bolt and lock plate on the drive gear , replace the accy case gasket and the front third of the oil pan gasket , and reassemble .. All this can be done with the engine installed ... Total parts are about 120 $ ..Labor is about 12 hours ... This the procedure as spelled out in the lycoming service bulletin... Thats it!!
  8. I bleed as follows , Bleed the air from the calipers at the bleeders , than I remove the calipers and pads and leave them hanging from the lines , (do this one caliper at a time) , Have some one in the plane pump the brake until the caliper piston moves out almost to the O ring , Than with a clamp or pliers push the piston all the way back in and repeat about 5 or 6 times.... This will force all the air in the system back out the masters.... Works every time ... Even on pipers!!!
  9. Below 5000 feet I go with 23 inches and 2400 rpm , and this nets me about 10.4 GPH , People that are running 24 24 are burning about 11.5 gph , ( I used to run at 24 24 until I put a JPI in my airplane ) The difference in cruise speed is about 2 knots , definitely not worth the extra 6 dollars an hour for fuel... Above 7000 I run wide open and 2400 with gps ground track about 150 to 155 knots (the best econ is at 12000 feet )
  10. Whenever I see Mooney (early) with a three blade , It screams THIS PLANE WAS ON ITS BELLY !!!!!!
  11. On my B I replaced the cowl flap cable with a push button type locking cable , the wind was opening up the flaps at speed and the 50 year old cable did not have enough resistance to keep them closed.. Also , there is not 30 inches of pressure at 10 K feet ,,, You have a bad manifold pressure guage (or a turbo) ...
  12. Apology accepted , Good job Chief Sanchez
  13. Unfortunately in this society the police can and do whatever they want to do with little or no consequence...I am astounded by the monumental arrogance of the police , as to not even acknowledge that they were overzealous in this incident .. And god forbid they should appologise... If they would apologise , in my opinion , this would be acceptable , But they won't .... And they definitely ow an apology here.....

  15. Unfortunately the biggest cost in aviation manufacture is the LIABILITY .... When someone gets killed in an airplane crash , the first to get sued is the manufacturer..If you notice there is a common theme in High performance aircraft , they are all about 400 to 500 K ... About a third of that is a liability policy , Thanks to all the lawyers out there....
  16. On my B it was there too , when I converted my panel I had an extra hole so I put it in the panel , (it is actually a panel mount buzzer they hang on the frame w/adel clamps) when it comes it really wakes you up , A lot louder in the panel..
  17. I switched to a strip guage when I did the SWTA panel mod on my B , and the senders were all the same , I know for a fact that all mooney fuel senders are the same , and the engine senders are lycoming parts , I have a spare strip guage for a 78 201 if any one wants it...
  18. Sven If your Radio is a KX170B it is legal , 170B and 175B radios are still legal ,
  19. I looked at the mitchells about 4 years ago , they do make a certified version that fits , but it was a modular setup and the total cost was over three K , so definitely cost efficient considering the cost of glass..
  20. It truly amazes me how cheap people can be , for 1000 1200 dollars you can have an alternator that will out perform your old one , weighs ten lbs less , have a solid state regulator , and have fifty years of technology and manufacturing enhancements over the crappy generator that is in there now .. I think if the difference in price is that important , you truly CAN NOT AFFORD to fly , If you take passengers or fly at night , or especially if you fly IFR , the difference can be life or death....
  21. The aftermarket tools are fine , also there is a service bulletin that changes the preload tourque on earlier models..
