M20J windshield replacement - shop recommendations
Jeev replied to BaldEagle's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I would call LASAR up in central Cal for a quote, they are very experienced up there. If you want to come to Vegas I could ask the shop I partner with EGA aviation how many they have done and how many hours it takes. They work on a lot of Mooneys and have maintained mine for 10 years. -
Regarding the buyers agent question it really comes down to how much time you have and how comfortable you are with the make and model you are buying. The process is not hard but it is time consuming. If you are financing regardless if you have an agent or not you will have to do most of the back and forth with finance. Where an agent really helps is finding the aircraft that meets your specs, often times you will have to go see 3 or 4 aircraft before you find the "one". After you locate the plane a competent agent will draft an agreement, set the terms, locate a shop that specializes in or has a lot of experience with the make and model, set up escrow, set up transition training / ferry services and a few other things. Like I said it's not hard just time consuming. I also work as both a broker and buyers agent and charge a flat fee of $2,500 ($500 as a retainer and $2000 at closing) plus travel when I work for the buyer. I personally like the process of buying and selling but some do not, the customers who retain my services are busy or first time buyers who want some help. If you are the type of person who likes to get involved I would recommend you do it yourself but use escrow, it makes it easier and ensures all the proper paperwork gets filed. If you go through Aerospace reports its only $300 or so bucks each for the seller and buyer, money well spent. If you need some help or have questions feel free to reach out, my advise is always free . One more thing, as some have said aircraft broker/buyers agents are unregulated and unfortunately there are some sleazy people out there. Be wary of anyone who wants the whole fee up front and does not ask a lot of questions about your mission, budget, pilot experience and maintenance strategies. Good luck and please remember to have fun, these are airplanes after all!!!!

Well the time has come, with our growing family I really needed something bigger so I jumped off the cliff and bought a Cessna 310R Colemill conversion, man she is sweet but really likes to drink 100LL. I was thinking it was going to take a while to sell 1YG so I would have more time with my Mooney however a local guy @jrothen4 snatched her up real quick. Its a great bird that I have upgraded throughout the years and it will serve him well. Also since he is local we are keeping the plans to do the first TruTrak install on 1YG. I will definitely still be around here frequently and in any if you guys come to Vegas shoot me a line!!!

This is a real nice Bravo with good bones, clean airframe and low time engine. It has not flown a lot recently but its been in a hangar in dry Vegas, I think it would be a great bird for someone who wants to upgrade it to their specs. Its being sold by my hangar neighbor and his Broker is a straight shooter, I have no skin in the game other than I want to see this clean Bravo in the hands of someone who will upgrade her and keep her in the air. Check it out: https://www.controller.com/listings/aircraft/for-sale/28461185/1992-mooney-m20m-bravo

WOW looks like the interior in a Lamborghini!!! Love it!

Real nice work!!! I would think the local machine shop could make them legally as an owner produced part.

I noticed you have the Aspens (obviously ), IFD540 and the GTX-345. Are you able to get the traffic and weather from the 345 on all your displays or did you have to pick either the IFD or aspens since they communicate at different BAUD rates? I am looking at a similar set up with less Aspens and curious, thanks.
-
Yes it will and it will look nice! JPI just told me they are bringing back their instant rebates as of 10/1/18 until 1.31.19, that is $400 off the EDM 900. PM me if you want more info :). Sanjeev

Oh that is pretty! How do you like you IFD?
-
I will work on it as I have been meaning to take a factory tour but I’m at least a 5-6 weeks out before I can make it out there.
-
Correct I was referring to open pins that can take an output from the Aspen or G5 for heading bug and other features. Not needed as you said since the Trutrak can operate as a stand alone but it would be for "nice to have features". We will see what is included when the update comes out.
-
Yes we will have to wait and I am certain there will be a revision on the install manual or appendix to include the Aspen / G5 interface. I do know there are some empty pins in the current wiring harness that would be available for "upgrades" they are PINS 7, 18, 24 & 25 on the diagram.

Just updated my website to include the general install manual with the wiring diagram and the install manuals for the approved kits for Cessna & Piper so you all can get an idea of the install. I will update this page with the Mooney manual when I get it. https://wolfaviationsales.com/trutrak-autopilots

Just got a reply from Corey at Trutrak and he did confirm that the Vision will be compatible with the Aspen AND the G5's! It is still in the works but will be released soon. -

Thank you! I know, I paid an avionics shop $6500 to swap out my 330 to a GTX345. My whole focus with my new venture is to do good work at fair prices. Make money from volume and good honest business rather than gouging to make a quick buck. We have not done an Aspen yet and TT is going to send me the manual. I can't imagine its more than a few wires and you are already back there in the harness so it shouldn't be a big deal. I will report back when I get the wiring diagram.

Come on down to Vegas there is plenty to do while your Mooneys getting upgraded . Yes removal of the autopilot is included in the price, worst case if the wiring is bad it would be 1 hr ($90) more however we have yet to charge anyone for it. We remove the old head unit, servos and use the same A/P breaker as long as it is 5 amp. We add the AP DISCO to the yoke, an AP master switch and a 5 amp breaker if there is not one already there for the AP, all included in the $7,250 price.

TruTrak Autopilot Pre Order's / Status Update
Jeev replied to Jeev's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
We have enough TruTrak installs under our belts now to confidently put some prices out. Since the wiring, controller & servos will basically be the same regardless of the airframe and the only difference will be the mounting kit and control linkages real world numbers for the TruTrak are $5000 for the kit, we cap the labor at 25hrs @ $90/hr and if we do it under 25 hours we only charge you real time. Based on the installs we have done on Pipers & Cessnas the first install was 35 hours (billed for 25), the second install was right around 22 hours (billed for 22 hrs) and after a few more my guys have it down to 25 or under which includes finding and fixing small issues related to the aircraft or wiring. So when the Mooney kit is approved I can guarantee that at our shop (EGA Aviation / Wolf Aviation @ KVGT) the total installed TruTrak Vision system will not cost more than $7,250 and possibly less. That assumes that TruTrak will keep the price of the Mooney kit the same at $5000. I took part in my first flight test of the TruTrak Vision over the weekend in a PA28 and was very impressed with the smoothness of the autopilot in turbulence and smooth air. The GPSS and LPV coupled approach were spot on and very impressive. I put the aircraft in a 60deg bank with 10deg nose up let go, hit the blue auto level button and the aircraft smoothly returned to level flight, really cool! -
I suspect this is about what we see real world. Don't get me wrong 2 G5's & GFC500 is an amazing and capable set up but definitely more than TT. Real world numbers for the TruTrak are $5000 for the kit, we cap the labor at 25hrs @ $90/hr and if we do it under 25 hours we only charge you real time. The estimate from TT of 18 hours is a little optimistic and assumes you run into no surprises which is unlikely on a 30+ year old airframe. Pretty much sums up the market for Trutrak right here.

There are clearly a few sides to this issue and it has been debated at length in this thread and the other one I started in avionics. Basically it comes down two three groups: 1. Those who insist on having the capability to fly an ILS down to minimums and are ok with paying $15k + installed for an autopilot. 2. Those who insist on having the capability to fly an ILS down to minimums, don't want to pay $15K + and will keep their legacy autopilots. 3. Those who want a very good autopilot, don't mind flying the ILS by hand or using heading mode & VS mode on the TT(or just flying the GPS app), don't want to pay 15k+ for an autopilot in their $70k-120k Mooney and are upgrading from units like a Century III to TruTrak to gain a HUGE amount of functionality and less maintenance. If you haven't guessed #3 is me and a large number of others. I am not trying to change the minds of those who are dead set on being able to fly an ILS. I see your point and if you have decided it is the best fit for your aircraft and piloting needs I am with you 100% however the Trutrak is way more advanced than some have described it as. It has built in GPSS, ALT preselect, VS, envelope protection, auto level and flys a beautiful GPS approach with or without LPV and is constructed in a way that an experienced shop should be able to install the whole system in around 25hrs and a mechanically inclined owner can do it for around 40hrs of their own time under the supervision of an A&P. We have done a few at our Vegas shop and have run into very little surprises, very happy. I have also done a few test flights and I am very impressed with how it flys. The GFC500 will be more than double the installed cost of the Trutrak after you purchase the GFC plus two G5's and that is not taking into account the people who will need to upgrade their GPS units, to some this option is ok for me I have a hard time plunking down that money just to fly an ILS and below 700AGL. I would challenge anyone to find a shop that would do an GFC with two G5's for less than $15k. The Trutrak will take GPSS outputs from just about every GPS navigator old and new plus may of the handheld units and should be around $8,000 installed assuming the prices for the kit are the same as the current kits and a shop rate of $90/hr.

I would highly recommend doing the install yourself if you have a friendly A&P to sign it off and guide you, it can really keep the cost down. It is straightforward but you do need a good crimping tool ($600 at spruce or borrow one) and you need to be able to ID the pins on the GPS harness. Other than that its just mounting the servos, the unit in the panel, Pitot / Static to the controller, running about 10 wires including a AP master switch and CWS / AP DISCO buttons. Your 1st time will probably take you 35-40 hrs, my guys in the shop have it down to 25hrs after doing a few. I would recommend that you have an A&P closely double check your work especially when it comes to the control linkages. TruTrak Tech is very good and will help you through any issues you encounter. As soon as I get the install manual for the Mooney I will post it here for everyone to look at. I am a dealer, located in Vegas and would love to earn your business for the hardware purchase or the full install and I will definitely be offering a Mooneyspace discount, I can ship anywhere as soon as it is approved. This autopilot is awesome by the way! I just got done doing a test flight in a Turbo Arrow, it was very bumpy this AM in Vegas and the TruTrak performed flawlessly and flew the GPS LPV with perfect accuracy, I really can't wait to put it in the Mooney!!
