  1. I don't know if it's possible/practical to remove the "glass", dry out, and replace, but the gauge itself is cheap (under $50, IIRC) and easy to replace--just pop it out, put in a new one, and secure it with silicone sealant.
  2. Dflybldr, that's pretty much what I've been doing, though with Parallels instead of VMWare and a different USB/serial converter. It definitely works, but it's a bit cumbersome. I understand that VirtualBox works about as well as Parallels/VMWare, and it's free. I'll have to try it out. I have my software to what seems to be a working state now. It will download the data to a microSD card in exactly the same format as the DRS-1 software, and is limited only by the capacity of your card. I'm having an EE friend of mine take a look at PCB layout, and I'll have a few made.
  3. I'm wondering if Oscar is talking about the MAPA Safety Foundation's PPP textbook. If so, it's quite informative, but even more so in the context of one of their weekend classes. It's also probably copyrighted...
  4. On my plane, the four (factory) panel lights are for low/high vac, and gear up/down. No stall light.
  5. Quote: jerry-N5911Q Have you figured out why they proudly advertise that their unit does less than any other 406 ELT on the market? It's a mystery to me.
  6. CloudAhoy seems to handle measuring the takeoff and landing rolls pretty well.
  7. Before you get too crazy, have you checked to make sure the ball is reading correctly? That is, is it in the center when the plane is level? Simple things first...
  8. I don't know where you'd go to replace them. However, I've heard good things about Air Parts of Lock Haven as a repair station--they're said to be able to repair just about anything in the way of instruments.
  9. Quote: Cruiser Your POH does not list a max engine speed (RPM)? Cylinder Head temp? Oil temp? Oil pressure? Fuel pressure? My POH does in fact require an artificial horizon. [snip] Apples to Organes. Tires come is all sizes and specs but are approved to the same TSO just like AIs come in different sizes and specs but are approved to the same TSO. You are citing replacement of the same size and spec. not just to the TSO.
  10. Quote: Cruiser This section makes the ACFM part of the certification. For your M20F, manuals are listed by serial number. Look in your manual under the Limitations section. Everything listed there is required to maintain the aircraft airworthness. IF there is no attitude indicator listed you are good to go without one. My bet is you will find it listed.
  11. Quote: KSMooniac Why do you say "There certainly have been failures of cylinders running LOP?" That is an assertion I sure wouldn't make.
  12. Quote: Cruiser Yes, the AI is required equipment and cannot be replaced with anything other than an approved make and model per the OEM certification.
  13. Quote: Cruiser You are aware of the insulator cracking problem with Fine Wires?
  14. Quote: Cruiser You must get an STC approval for the electric AI you want to install. Be sure it is available.
  15. Quote: DonMuncy Why doesn't some computer genius make a deal with Jimmy Garrison to use his evaluations and create a program to value Mooneys.
  16. Quote: allsmiles What is he referring to when he says overleaning, can someone please explain?
  17. I don't see that the LoPresti style should inherently cost any more to make than the stock J style, but it apparently gives some decent improvements in performance (over the stock J, and yet more so over the stock C-F cowl). If this is correct, I'd be more inclined to prefer that style. Besides, it looks cool. It would also be good, if feasible, to improve cowl access--large, easy-opening hatches for preflight, etc. I'm sure there's a trade-off between that, cost, stiffness, etc., but something to consider.
  18. Yikes! $200 for a USB drive? It must be some sort of installed module that will save to a USB drive (which would make a bit more sense). If that's the case, there would be some installation cost, but perhaps not too much. With current technology, saving to a USB drive (or SD/microSD card) is probably about the best we can do, convenienc-wise, to download engine monitor data, and it seems that the current crop of monitors has that capability built-in. Looks like JPI's come up with a way to add that capability to their older units--good for them. Edit: I dug around a bit more on their site and was able to find out a little more here: http://buyjpi.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=USBDWNBOX&Category_Code=UAPC. Sounds like, rather than being an installed gadget, it's a portable module like I'm working on. They use a USB drive; I use a microSD card. Their unit costs more than mine would, but it's available today (apparently), fully assembled and ready to go. And, of course, it works with the JPI monitors, while mine works with EI (I don't doubt mine could be made to work with JPI, but the software would be completely different).
  19. I have a PS 7000B in '48Q. It's been there for the last 4+ years, and I've been very happy with it. Audio quality is good, the VOX works perfectly, and it handles everything I need it to do (and then some).
  20. Does the 209A have the GPS/VOR annunciator built into it? You may not need it in your installation, but the 106 has this. Might explain part of the cost difference, anyway.

  22. I keep my 337s in my adLog binder, with scanned copies on my computer.
  23. For the private, I rented, and that worked well for me. I don't know that I'd want to own a trainer (152/172/Warrior/etc.) long term, and I probably wasn't too kind to the planes I trained in. For the instrument, I already had my Mooney, and trained in it. For me, at least, the IR was for traveling, so it made sense to do it in the plane I'd be traveling in.
  24. Quote: carusoam DanB, It's like using a VOR and DME only easier. If you drive the AP with it, it's nice and smooth. It loads complete IFR procedures and plots the waypoints on the screen. It can memorize several flight plans, do nearest, full database.
  25. Count me in!
