Looks like Ross is very passionate about shock cooling! Maybe you need to be shock cooled Ross!! You said it yourself. Your engine has not been touched by Lycoming since the 1960's. I don't know how true that is but why would they need to touch it. It's a bulletproof engine!! Your wannabes you so very passionatly carry water for, have they come up with a better engine?? What do they do? they talk about lop rop etc etc as if it's a new concept! Lindbergh did this when he crossed the Atlantic Ross!! Lycoming does this all day long in a CONTROLLED well instrumented environment. I know I've seen it! The issue is that not every pilot out there is capable of operating their engine in this narrow performance envelope. I will listen to Lycoming each and every day before I listen to any talking head out there who claims he knows best! Chill out Ross!!

It's a similar frenzy when it comes to lop vs rop. Lycoming never said we can't run our engines lop. They clearly recommend running AT PEAK, at the beginning of the best economy range. They attempt to safeguard us from destroying our perfectly good engines! Mixture control is the key which is not understood by most of us. I'm still learning this myself. Sure lop will save some gas but do we really care? What is this difference in our little engine, half a gallon an hour? Not only does Lycoming try to help us but it is the margins they engineered into our engines that saves a lot of us!

I don't mean to be barking I'm only saying that it is frustrating to see how people will complicate something very simple. Just follow these simple instructions from Lycoming recommendations: Descent Plan ahead to make a smooth temperature transition between cruise and descent. Start descent early and allow airspeed to increase within aircraft limits. Maintain power asrequired and mixture setting. Cylinder head temperature change rate should not exceed 50°F per minute to avoid rapid shock cooling. Spoilers may be used if so equipped. Whenever the mixture is adjusted, rich or lean, it should be done slowly. At all times, caution must be taken not to shock cool the cylinders. The maximum recommended temperature change should not exceed 50°F per minute. Does'mt this sound LOGICAL? What's the problem? Why do some people want to do something different? Is it because Lycoming recommends it and they want to go against it? I don't get it!
-
What do you want Lycoming to come up with? They developed and gave us a bulletproof engine for our Mooneys!! If we follow some of their simple directions and give it half a chance it will go well beyond TBO!! What did the other talking heads and "engine experts" come up with? Did they come up with something that I missed?

Quote: Shadrach Uhh... guys, Lycoming manufactures the engine and Lycoming honors the warranty. I would listen to Lycoming!! Anyone can say whtever they want but they are not responsible or liable. Use common sense and LISTEN to Lycoming. Do not discount the voice of experience over some "wannabes" out there who talk without any substance.

The Gtn 750 is an awsome box. Big and hi res that it serves as an MFD as well. It makes the G500 redundant. I for one am glad I waited. It is true magic in my opinion. If the plane has an HSI already there is no need that I see t be buying "glass" My Mooney, as many others, have the KCS 55A with HSI. The HSI is electric so I do not see any need for a PFD! Install the GTN 750 and MAYBE an electric AI and I'm done! I say maybe on the AI because with some proactive maintenance the vaccuum pump can be replaced on a set schedule. Say every two or three years because an AI is cheap compared to a PFD. I think people who jumped on the "glass' bandwagon paid too much!! The GTN 750 is cheap in comparison. It is a WASS GPS Nav com and MFD and the latest technlogy at that. A 530W with an MFD cost more!

Some years ago I was in the process of purchasing a Mooney from a "reputable" broker in San Antonio. I did my due diligence and decided to proceed to buy. I gave a deposit to the broker and the airplane was scheduled for pre-purchase inspection at Maxwell. The inspection was good and decided to go forward. I'm in NJ and planned to catch a flight to San Antonio to close and pickup the airplane and fly it back to NJ. Also I had arranged for a Mooney pilot to fly with me back to NJ and I would pay for his flight back. I confirmed everything with the "reputable" broker a few days before I bought the airline tickets. All was a go and I had airline tickets and was ready to fly to San Antonio. My flight was for a Sat early morning departure from PHL. I receive a phone call late Friday evening informing me that the airplane was not available!!! NOT AVAILABLE!! To make a long story short they took my deposit and God only knows what they did with the airplane. If they even had controll of the sale of the airplane. It took me almost an entire year and legal action to get my deposit back!! I did receive my deposit less Maxwell's bill which was not that much thankfully, with a letter crying that it costs them money to inventory airplanes, etc etc. Fact is they tried to pull a fast one. They collected my deposit with no intent to sell me the airplane!! Lesson: DO NOT TRUST such used car salesmen!! ALWAYS use an escrow service.

Finally Garmin comes out with a TRUE IFR box. This is exactly what I've been waiting for. I didn't want the x30 because it pretends to be IFR when it is really a VFR box. Now all I need is a little discount to pull the trigger on the 750. Awsome!!

I take this as a sale to China is coming up.

I have been hearing alot of these various glitches with Aspen. It is disturbing. It makes me hold off on installing. I'm not sure if Garmin G500 has similar issues. It would be disappointing and a hassle to have it installed and then have to go back and forth to get it to work right. I know Aspen stands behind it and all but frankly it shouls work the first time. Is it Aspen or is it the installers. Maybe both. They aren't ready for prime time it seems.

My plane was annualed and serviced by Dugosh for 14 years straight before I bought it. The previous owner had always used Avblend with each oil change. Dugosh highly recommended it also. I continue to use Avblend with Aeroshell 15W50 with excellent success. My current MSC also likes it.

Does anyone care to share power/configuration settings for the 201?

Well, in China labor costs are way lower than they are here. Allso they don't have our FAA to regulate things nor a legal and insurance system to deal with lawsiuts. So it is conceivable they can produce an aircraft at a fraction of its cost here. They will then proceed and sell it to us here! So, effectively, they have purchased a certified aircraft design and bypassed our entire regulatory and liability mechanisms! Now, if we are smart about it, we will say to them "not so fast!!" and bar them from selling an aircraft here that they have manufactured over there! Or place a flat 50% or whatever % is deemed appropriate tax on the cost of any aircraft they try to bring over here and sell. But will it happen? I will not hold my breath. Especially when I see our trade deficit with China. I did say IF we are smart about it!

There is something wrong when our American companies are sold to foreigners so easily. There is just something majorly wrong about that. Is Mooney also being sold to the Chinese?

Does anyone know what this is going to be?

I know I am in the minority. Even if you are a minority of one the truth is the truth! Everything great and intelligent is in the minority! Lets say you have 100 damaged airplanes flying and one poor soul drops out of the sky. What do we say, 99 are OK!? Its like the man who drowned crossing a river with an average depth of 6 inches! The problem with statistics is that they only apply to the population not the poor individual. We are all proud of our airplanes. If we wern't we would own a boat or something! But we need to stay in touch with reality. An airplane's value is not directly linked of how proud we are as owners! It is linked on how well we take care of it over time so it can retain its inherent value.
-
It never ceases to amaze me how some of us have been so brainwashed by Mooney "pseudo-experts" to accept and believe that damage history is somehow OK. This is of epidemic proportions. HISTORY is all the buyer has when considering an airplane purchase! The plane's HISTORY. That's all! Maintenance history and damage history. How was the airplane maintained and has it ever been majirly damaged. Look at these historical records and don't be blinded by some "expert" who will say anything as long as he makes the sale! The best expert is the pilot owner of the airplane. We all know how well we maintain our Mooneys and if we cut corners or not. IMO reputable MSC's are worth their weight in gold when it comes to value retention through proper maintenance.
