Sounds goofy. Not what I would do!

Rising oil temp + falling oil press = uh oh....
PTK replied to M016576's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
If you recall your POH states that for extended flights you need 8 quarts of oil. Certainly a four hour flight qualifies as an extended flight. Also you may want to consider heavier oil in the heat. I really like the performance Aeroshell 15W50. Some people say it's pricey but I disagree. Oil is not an item I'd want to cut cost in! -
Wait after Oshkosh and go with kfd 840 and ksn770 if you need gps nav comm. Forget the G500. IMO it's not worth it. It's merely a stripped down g600 and it's Garmin's way of attacking the Aspen. I don't like the Aspen because I think it's too small. Size does matter in a PFD. The KFD 840 is perfecr t and it does what a PFD is meant to do without all the extra junk and clutter.

One bad experience with brand new Skytec 149NL. I've had the starter for 1 week. I started the airplane three times in this 1 week. The 4th time dead starter. YES DEAD STARTER! Thank God my AP did not charge me again to remove due to the fact HE guaranteed the labor if it failed within the two years that Skytec warrants the starter.! He wasn't happy and neither was I. But Skytec overnighted another one out. It does not make me feel warm and fuzzy for a brand new starter but I must accept it as another paragraph in Murphy's Law or just a fluke of nature.

Hello all. Does anyone know hoe to revise the weight and balance after installing a skytec starter? I just installed a brand new Skytec startet and I was not sure how to recalculate the new weight and balance. The POH has one arm and moment for the entitre engine including starter and alternator, but my AP is giving me a different set of numbers for the starter. I don't want to make a mistake but also I don't want to tell him he is making a mistake unless I am certain of what I'm talking about. He wouldn't mind but I don't want him to think I'm second guessing him with wromg info at that! Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks. P.S. What a difference from the old bendix. I am taxiing with this thing! Just kidding!

For what its worth I am researching different EFBs. I called Anywhere Map three times. The telephone operator came across as very unprofessional and bothered by my calls. She had no concept as to what they were selling. I asked if someone could go over the sustem with me on the telephone just to see how it performs certain functions. NOPE! I asked if I could connect with them remotely on the computer and go over it. NOPE! The lady gave me two options to see their system: Fly to Kansas or fly to Osh Kosh! And this is after she put me on hold for 18 minutes by my watch and I am not exagerating. 18 minutes so she could brief herself on the system. I guess she had to read up on it with me on the phone! Needless to say I am not considering their system anymore. If this is how they treat a potential customer how are they going to treat a real customer after they got the money? Very unprofessional. On a refreshing note I called True Fkight and had the most pleasant experience. All my questions were answered, a technical support person actually offered to connect remotely with me and show me the system which I did. He even gave his cell number to call him if I had further questions. Very professional and very willing to educate me on the details. I have not ecided yet but i wanted to share these very different experiences with anyone interested.

No offense taken. No problem. I was making the point that for pure situational awareness, which is ALL these things will provide, we do not need to spend thousands of dollars! It is very easy to jump on bandwagons and then be dissappointed! In fact I use my iphone running a nice little very powerfull, free ( I think it was .99 cents actually) app called Goodreader. I download the approach plates to it FOR FREE. The whole country if I want. I keep the iphone in front of me on my yoke and I can pull up any plate instantly. It sits neatly on the yoke and you know the iphone, it's a tad bigger than the mooney emblem on the yoke! Very unobtrusive BUT VERY POWERFULL AND FUNCTIONAL! Now you or someone mentioned the ipAD. I think it's too big. Where do you mount the iPAD? Is it sitting on the copilot seat? I am not referring to the 530. Personally I don't like the 530. I feel it's dated and therefore overpriced. It does the job though for its certified status of a GPS. I'm waiting for the KSN 770 if they ever bring it out. I know it's a big if but I'm willing to wait. I feel Garmin has some sort of monopoly and it's the reason why they have not changed the 530 in 13 years!

To Jeff S who is asking if I'm on the Piper forums the answer is no I am not. I'm a Mooney driver and not Piper. But if you are going to call me cantankerous you need to explain to me and to the rest of the forum participants why you are calling me that and what it is exactly that is irritating you. The forum is yours. I'm listening.

Exactly. This is why paper is primary in my airplane. And let's not forget that they are coming out with backup gadgets to backup the present gadgets. When hardware is able to be "primary" as defined by the FAA then I would consider something. This is just my opinion and it is worth as much as you paid for it!
-
What do you mean FAA legal ? I hope you don't mean you fly around with no paper backup ! What do you do when your FAA legal hardware fails ? Are you kidding me?? FAA legal !?

I forgot to mention I also have my handheld Garmin moving map interfaced to communicate with my fuel flow. It gives me all the fuel info I can imagine for my flight plan. Down to mpg. What else do we need? These older discontinued Garmin handhelds are a bargain on ebay these days!
-
Let's be sensible people. It's nice to have the glass panels, fancy gps's georeferenced charts, plates, synthetic vision etc etc. BUT WE STILL NEED THE PAPER folks ! Now IMO, if I'm going to carry the paper with me I might as well use it! Such a novell idea?! I see no sensible reason to spend thousands of dollars for fancy gadgetry when it cannot be primary and it's just going to be in the way! What I use at unfamiliar airports is an old Garmin handheld which has approaches for situational awareness while I follow along on the paper plate. Everyone talks about situational awareness because this is ALL these gadgets do! They cannot be primary. Just use the paper it's not that hard!! The synthetic vision is a funny one. It supposedly shows us tree tops. We are not supposed to be flying over treetops to begin with folks!!

I have difficulty starting a warm engine some times after shut down. The first start of the day is perfect and quick. But if I shut down and then try to restart again later it gives a little trouble. You mentioned vapor locked. I aleays thought it was flooded. How do you tell the difference between vapor locked and flooded?? Also you put solar panels and a fan where? Thanks!

Would you post a photo??

I still can't believe you paid 20K $ for leather seats and glass. Are you sure you didn't have an engine overhaul?
-
When I get around to it I'll post some photos of my interior. New leather outsourced and new carpet and refinished plastics done by yours truly. Every time I approach my airplane and open the door I feel so proud!! If anyone is interested in refinishing plastics I'll tell you what I did. It's better than brand new and cost very little. You have to not be scared to put in some elbow grease.

For 2-3 knots? No way!! I bet if we paid some attention to the rigging and spent a few dollars to have our airframes properly rigged we would gain a few knots from that alone with no increase in fuel consumption. In actuality we'd come out ahead because we gain speed with no increase in fuel flow. I am refering to the J but it applies to anything. Proper rigging is paramount IMO before we jump and spend many thousands for an engine!

You know they invented wheelbarrows to teach FAA inspectors to walk on their hind legs.

I think before you jump on the bandwagon you should really do the math forward and backward to see what you are gaining over the IO 360. What are you really gaining? IMO it's not worth the extra cost and increased fuel flow. As the laws of thermodynamics say "there is no free lunch" !!

20K ????!!!!???? Are you out of your mind??!! I did mine: 4 seats all FAA certified leather with new memory foam for $1650 !!! I know glass foesn't cost 18K!! Seriously man ! Are you sure??

Where do these mount in a J?

DUGOSH

How exactly did you remove the old windlace? Is it a lot of work?? Thanks!
