  1. Quote: KSMooniac A single installed Aspen PFD costs no where near that... and in fact less than half of your estimate. While you call it a downgrade, go look at the price history on the used market for the King FD/HSI systems since Aspen and Garmin have entered that market and tell me that they can't fill those shoes... the market speaks loudly and clearly and it is valuing the mechanical King systems less and less with each passing year. I don't have a FD or HSI in my plane, but if I did and either of them shot craps I would not waste any money overhauling them and instead would spring for an Aspen. There is just too much upside for these modern systems IMO.
  2. Installed probably very close to 25-30K !!! I neglected on my previous post, any "upgrade" has to be worthy of the airplane it is going in and also it has to be wothy of what it is replacing. In this case Aspen has some very big shoes to fill in replacing the King equipment. So big that it can't fill them and it shows. This is not bad by the way. Aspen is trying and so is Garmin. This is a good thing. There may come a time when these will be able to be called "upgrades". The time has not come yet.
  3. Quote: peter How do you know they didn't think of that??? They could require an avionics cooling fan that perhaps the shop neglected to install, yet you automatically blame the manufacturer? There are lots of these units in the field performing to spec, and they would not have gotten certified in the first place if there were rampant problems with overheating or other glitches...
  4. Quote: N4352H I know of a gentleman who said for 12 straight years..."I'm not buying one of those Garmin 430 radios...the second I do, they'll just come out with something better". Well, the did...12 years later (a third to half of a flying career for most people). The vexing question is, when does one jump in and realize the benifit? And the fact of the matter is, I have flown aircraft both VFR and IMC and have watched FCS gyros go tits up, so Garmin and Aspen cutting their teeth on new technology is not a fair analysis.
  5. Quote: KSMooniac My point exactly. Quitting in flight like this is unnacceptable! I' sorry. I don't care if they swap it out for a new one or whatever they do after the fact. I don't want it to quit!! Period. Why didn't they think of this during the r&d or quality control? Seems like they are playing catch up and rushing to bring these boxes to the marketplace that they miss things.
  6. Quote: Magnum One Aspen quit in hard IMC due to overheating, they recommend to cool it 0with the radio blower.
  7. Quote: Vref Well I started my career in aviation repairing DC10 avionics. It was state of the art technology 70's 80's ...till it became to expensive to repair all the sophisticated ADI's, HSI's, INS's etc....The airlines went glass... Electronics are also less time consuming in the repairshop...board swap's etc...So I guess we will be all looking at glass in the near future..;-))....but in some countries they will love to see the pricedrop of second hand HSI's and ATT indicators
  8. It seems there are some assumptions made here that are not supported by the facts. One is that the electric King HSI is very expensive to overhaul. This is simply incorrect. I think I was quoted around $1000 for the HSI when Iasked about the AI. I think for both insteruments it was around $2K or a little over. The other assumption that is being made is that the Aspen or G500 is somehow 'better" than the King HSI /AI and those "old" instruments are going to be worthless. This is also not correct in my opinion. Is an older swiss timepiece worthless and is a battery operated digital watch better? I guess one's perception is reality. Personally I wouldn't dismiss these instruments as inferior. In my panel they will be there for many years to come playing happily right next to my brand new GTN 750. This gives me all the situational awareness I need. Also ask anyone who has "upgraded" to the Aspen or the G500 about their experience. Read some posts on the web. I think for most it has not been as simple as just installing it. There have been plenty of malfunctioning issues that frankly are a royal waste of time. For that kind of money I would expect to fly away and be done. Not have to go back and forth to correct things. Just some thoughts.
  9. One thing I neglected to mention, if you really want glass I would wait. Garmin just put out the GTN 750 which is really nice and big. It is a GPS/COMM/MFD. It renders the MFD portion of the G500 and Aspen unecessary. I'm certain Garmin will come up with a PFD only version and slash the cost. I'm getting the GTN 750 with the remote audio panel and transponder installed next week. It really cleans up the panel.
  10. Quote: gsengle Do I really want to do this? My inclination is to repair the AI, and save up for the backup AI and then the GPSS over time.
  11. Quote: Piloto The problem with Mooney doors is that the frame to door gap varies from 1/16" at the hinge to 1/4" at the rear of the door. This variation impose a limitation on how thick the seal can be without straining the hinge. This is why even on new Mooneys there is a hissing leak on the door rear side. Best way to overcome this problem is to have a conformal seal like foam weatherstrip type. For over 20 years I have used the MD 3/8" x 3/4" Marine & Automotive Weatherstrip with excellent results. It last about 5 years before a hissing leak shows. Very easy to install. just peel back the tape to expose the adhesive and apply it on the door frame. You can get it for about $4.00 for a 10' roll at Home Depot or Western Marine Stores. José
  12. Quote: KSMooniac I'd recommend not going overboard with soundproofing... it can add a lot of weight and really eat into your useful load. Thicker windows will do this too. Modern ANR headsets will help much more than a bunch of soundproofing and save weight.
  13. Looks awesome. Hope you really enjoy it!! If you don't mind me asking what did it cost just for the 750 installed?

  16. Quote: flyboy0681 These are all unknowns at this time, but given Garmin's reputation for quality, I wouldn't anticipate any major problems.
  17. Quote: flyboy0681 The thinking here is that should the GTN freeze up or fail (or go back to Garmin for whatever reason), that means all of the other systems are rendered inoperable.

  21. Hey Fantom, pardon me Sir. I don't think I was rubbing anything in. And I sure I don't think I was caustic. I was simply commenting on an observation. I think you'll agree that there is too many of these disgruntled situations. Either with "experts" "selling" airplanes collecting deposits with no intent to sell an airplane, or a paint shop that was paid 10 grand and delivered no airplane with the poor owner having to go to another paint shop, or this instance when this poor fellow got ripped off in a major way or avionics shops performing inferior installs, etc. My comment was that maybe we as buyers of these services are being too naive and not doing our due diligence. Is this rubbing it in and caustic??!! I don't think so fantom! I don't know why you feel the need to apologize. If anyone should apologize it should be me if I offended anyone by my comments. If I did I sincerely wholeheartedly apologize!! Now are you going to apologize about your not so funny dental jokes??!!
