  2. From what I've seen, most of the midairs around airports, often with a CFI on board, are due to all the glass and other, sometimes confusng, gizmos we've come to depend on. Since there are more (many) targets around airports, traffic monitors help little and only encourage you to keep your eyeballs on the panel rather than outside, where they should be. Also, if that guy aiming at you in MVFR, either doesn"t have a transponder or it's turned off......you're screwed. Do yourself, and your family a favor by keeping your head on a swivel, and your eyes outside.
  3. WOW Craig, did you hit the lotto? That sounds like at least a 50 AMU investment. What a wonderful set-up!
  4. It's an minor annoyance, and FAR from a "serious issue" IMO. Thanks to Craig for both developing and hosting this site, asking nothing in return.
  5. Quote: kallend Powerflow for IO-360 = $4500, Dawley said my overhaul would be $300 to $550 depending on what they had to do to it. My buddy, with whom I share a hangar, is a Powerflow dealer. A Powerflow exhaust is WAY down my list of desired upgrades. IMHO, the tradeoff of $$$ for HP isn't worth it, but he has a C-172 with powerflow and I can definitely see the difference on it.
  6. ......and will do it in less time without mucking things up.
  7. Quote: jonnyjetprop I'm not quite sure my wife likes GA. My full time job is driving a MD-11 for a charter airline. Welcome! Your wife will like FL much more than GA
  8. Sweet, very sweet!
  9. Quote: eldeano I budget about one aviation maintenance unit ($1000.00) a month.
  10. Be careful guys...here's a centerline landing on a narrow runway with flaps down, and prop looks good, but a bit too close to the ground:
  11. Let's not forget KHWO, North Perry Airport, which is a lot closer than KPMP or KFXE, and KTMB, Tamiami-Kendall which is probably the most convenient of all of them. Be certain to verify costs in advance, and in writing!
  12. For whatever it's worth, $550 for a worst case senario is very unrealistic, but that doesn't help you. This is why I like to deal with locals whenever possible. Dawley does excellent work. Good luck!
  13. I've heard good reports about Central Florida over the years, also.
  14. Thanks...it is X60. Note the wrong identifier was published in the MAPA Log, so always check twice, which I know everyone does. Who would ever just punch an identifier in their GPS and go, without cross checking ;-)
  15. Sorry I missed posting about last weekends fly-in at KSEF. Reports are that it was well attended, with about 14 Mooneys on the line. The February fly-in will be to Williston (X62) on Saturday, February 12th, at the Pyper Kub Cafe, with details to follow. Come out and meet abunch of friendly Mooniacs!!
  16. Quote: JimR Is that Norm "the Mooney Miser" Smith's old bird you've got there? Paint scheme looks similar and I know that he was from South Florida. Norm's plane didn't look that good when it came out of the paint shop, and after flying through some rain, it looked even worse. After Norm passed away several years ago, his family was attempting to sell it for some unrealistic price. The plane had issues, a recent gear up, and I don't know where it is now, nor do I recall his name for it. Norm sleeping at airshow exhibits with that prop topped hat is missed. He was one-of-a-kind. RIP, Norm.
  17. Bill Snead at Sarasota Avionics (in Venice) will take very good care of you, Mike. Give him a call for the latest deals. http://www.sarasotaavionics.com/catalog.aspx?cid=130 Their installed prices are as good as any I've found in FL, and they do a first rate job.
  18. Sun-n-Fun for sure, and Vidalia sounds very interesting....
  19. Give Don Maxwell in Longview Texas (KGGG) a call. He knows more about Mooneys than anyone you'll find locally.
  20. Quote: jlunseth .....it seems to me that it is time for aviation teaching to catch up to what pilots are actually flying...
  21. Quote: vasco Yup, $90K is much too expensive for WAAS.
  22. Thanks, Scott. Me too! I'm almost sputtering lean on the ground, and rarely get the opportunity to lean on TO. It probably not ALL good that I've been flying the same plane for 16 years and know just where "the knobs should be" without checking exactly what the readings are. Fly safe out there!
  23. Scott...any reason not to lean before TO roll, other than not being at full throttle yet?
  24. Quote: mooneygirl .....military flying might lead you to be more confident that you should be. Perhaps some of our ex-military can give their thoughts. Would flying the latest and greatest for a living, give us too much confidence in our little Mooneys? Actually, I suspect it's just the opposite. It was for me, because my little Mooney has much less capability than my BIG Fantom, the training, checks, and medicals were much more intense in the Air Force, if we ran into trouble there was lots of help from the ground, and the regs precluded us from getting into the kind of trouble these poor souls found themselves in, may they RIP. To everyone here, have a wonderful Christmas.
