  1. Some comments in the EarthX thread made me think it would be worth talking more about those issues separately. Personally, I'm a techie and I figure whenever I do build a hangar, it will have a cell service repeater along with wifi. I don't know if I will ever have a plane with live monitoring onboard, but do think it would be worthwhile to have a hangar internet system in place for security and fire concerns. And the wifi would obviously be helpful for flight planning, weather monitoring and nav database updates. But...... there is a lot of appeal in the idea of being able to (reasonably) go completely offline when working in the hangar and getting away from the daily grind and interrupts. So how do you guys handle this and what do you prefer? I know some go with having at least wifi internet available in their hangar.
  2. Any longer and they could use that for a cupholder bracket.
  3. Hey Friends, After way too long of a process, I finally closed on my first Mooney. Heck, first plane, for that matter! It’s been a life long dream to have my own plane and I’m in awe it actually happened. Thanks to some very kind and helpful people here who answered my countless questions. Yes, I’ve already been making arrangements to get transition training. And won’t ever stop learning and fine tuning. Already got Don’s landing dvd and have been watching it. Looking forward to getting to know the plane better and start plotting out those squawks and upgrades! Thanks Guys! Dan
  4. That sucks about the Cirrus. To be completely fair, that's not an EarthX problem. That's a poor design/engineering choice on the part of Cirrus. Any kind of "connected" system should have a safe guard monitoring it's supply voltage so that it doesn't cripple the host. At the price level we are talking, not having that kind of safety net designed in is inexcusable.
  5. Grats!
  6. @Utah20Gflyer I like that panel! Those 275's have such a great display on them. Nicely done! I really like that fuel readout as well - which one is that?
  7. Was hoping to make this one but the timing didn’t work out. @bcg I’d like one of those silhouettes as well. How big is it?
  8. So you’re saying we shouldn’t go to fly-ins at an all-you-can-eat buffet?
  9. Thanks! I was wondering if they could help make up for not having speed brakes, but obviously you wouldn’t want to shock cool the engine.
  10. Do the cowl flaps make a significant difference in drag?
  11. As a J shopper, I find this thread fascinating but can’t help wondering why no one has mentioned three blade props. Seems to me that would be a de facto recommendation if someone is based at a short field and expecting mostly mgtow operations.
  12. @Marc_B Thank you for taking the time to share all that. Very cool and informative.
  13. @1980Mooney I’m just gonna quote the X-Files. “I want to believe.”
  14. Gann are in Lafayette(30 miles away) and might be able to help you out.
  15. I bet you could request the gen one exit pipe if you wanted, and there's nothing to say it couldn't be shortened as needed to better suit the individual installation needs and cut down on that drag. I think it would be good to get a used example of the gen2 system and get a good welder/speed shop to go through it. I'm sure there is "repair" work that could be done that would improve their flow.
  16. I really wish we had more options in that department. A good header system tuned for our cruising/peak rpm bands would make a nice difference in performance and fuel burns.
  17. Thank you for pointing that out. Where I live, it is often gusty and very windy. Mine will have to unfortunately sit outside while I find/build a hangar. It would suck to mess up the paint with a loose cover flapping away at it.
  18. While we're on subject - I wonder if the 390 would be a different answer for this exhaust on the J.
  19. If it had been a Cirrus, would they have taken out even more of the crop?
  20. Thank you Sir. This is probably what I will end up doing. I was just thinking it would be a good idea to have a kind of limiter or reminder in place when the plane is new to me and I'm wanting to take it out all the time. It would suck to wake up one morning to find out it's time to write a check for the overhaul and not have the money for it.
  21. No apologies needed. That’s the reason I made this thread - to find out how others plan for those events. I appreciate the info and candor!
  22. Just curious how you guys are handling long term budgeting for known big stuff like engine overhauls and prop replacements. I’m hoping to pick up a mid time J soon. I plan to put a lot of hours on it in a relatively short amount of time. So I’m thinking about putting $50 per flight hour into a seperate account as I go. Does that make sense or is there a better way to do it?
  23. I’ve done some custom logod stuff in the past for other hobbies and it sounds like that’s what will end up happening here. As an example, if you can find a good source image, shutterfly can produce an awesome coffee mug.
  24. It would be worth your while to hunt down the closest EAA chapter. They will know the scoop.
  25. Hey folks, I'm looking to buy some quality gear. I see a few things on that big river site but figured there has to be a better option out there. I checked the mothership site, but don't see anything there. Anyone know of a good shop they can recommend?
