After the first time visual approach load/activation, repeated selection load/activation results in no vertical guidance display (lateral guidance always displays correctly). This is all happening around the same airport. The airplane visual approach icon is displayed the entire time at the lower left. If I did not have a route already input, I'd never see the visual guidance on the first try as system would not know what to do and would not produce any lateral guidance which is functioning correctly EVERY time. I'm doing everything I know to do but still cannot obtain visual guidance time after time. Should work is the operative word!

Visual guidance is not working consistently for me. Here is the equipment: GI275 AI (installed a few months ago) GI275 HSI (installed a few months back) GTN750 GPS (installed years ago) KFC150 Autopilot (original equipement) Here is what is going on: I’m observing that for the first landing of the day, vertical and lateral guidance works as expected by selecting a visual approach in the typical way (today it was Visual 7L at KLVK). Last week, 25R (first landing displayed vertical guidance) However, subsequent landings aren’t displaying vertical guidance (lateral guidance is fine). The GI276 indicates visual approach on display (no change in display). I’ve even tried to select the visual approach in the air, thinking that maybe the requirement is to set it up for every landing and loading/activating to no avail. I’m flying the pattern consistently enough to where this should not be causing this issue. I’ve not tried anything beyond about 4 or 5 landings. If I happen to try 10+ landings, I have no guess what the result would be and whether the vertical guidance would display. I contacted Garmin on this. Their suggestion was to install terrain database. I was skeptical because I observed vertical guidance w/o any terrain data installed many times before and with my King HSI previously. My GI275’s are newly installed as of October and my avionics guy left the terrain data uninstalled. To pacify Garmin, I installed a valIid terrain db to both units. My testing today did not improve anything and confirmed my previous suspicions that the terrain db wasn’t going to improve anything. I need to go back to Garmin but thought I’d ask here as well. I often find/receive better info than from the OEM. I realize they need to ask everyone “is it plugged in and powered up” to start everyone from a known point but they could not explain to my satisfaction why terrain data was needed for vertical guidance. Prior to updating to GI275’s I was able to use the vertical guidance on my King HSI with much more success than now which is another data point. What would lead to inconsistent behavior identified above? My understanding is the the GTN750 does the calculation using airport data and either it will do it providing there are no obstacles with 3NM or it won’t. My next thoughts were to test as follows: Power up, do 1 landing Pull circuit breaker during taxi back, power up and do 1 landing Pull circuit breaker during taxi back, power up and do 1 landing Pull circuit breaker during taxi back, power up and do 3 landings leaving the unit on Will do LNAV approaches later on after this issue is solved Assuming the condition exists after test 3, I’m not sure what to do next. This is looking very much like a software bug. I’ve seen this situation for the last 4 to 5 fly days (it probably existed for longer than that…I just was focused on debuting other items). This is going to be very difficult to reproduce and figure out how to work around it and force the vertical guidance to consistently display. Any help or suggestions on what to try to solve this problem would be helpful. The tech with Garmin was professional, but I’m not sure he had knowledge or access to a good knowledge base. I hope this is something related to configuration or installation because it would make me VERY nervous if indeed this is some sort of software bug. There is nothing unique about my equipment or setup at least I do not think so. Thank you. Freddy

Thanks for replies. I do plan LEDs but need to allow amu's to build after last annual. I appreciate the details. I plan to start researching LEDs soon. I have enjoyed hid for 20 years on autos and most recently leds. I'd like to feel super confident in night landings (it bites getting old along with the typical change in vision). Freddy

Hi everyone, As it turns out, my landing light and taxi lights are not symmetrical and they should be (landing light is inboard on once side but not the other). Does anyone know for sure if the landing lights should be outboard or inboard? Just another minor fix that has be obsessed. They tell me to get used to changing out those lights...at least until I identify a suitable replacement.

Everything I've found points to magnetometer GMU 11. Avionics guy insists that it was installed correctly and ground checked, etc. My plan at this point is to do the basics like check that GI 275 is interfacing with GMU 11, etc. DB update message is plausible. I got a 1 time terrain update from avionics shop but due to the lag in release, its out of date and 275's are rejecting it. Anyone else in the bay area have two of these installed and can recommend a nearby shop? I'm sorta on my own on this until I identify a new shop to finish shaking down this install. Thank you. Freddy

Hi Everyone, The upgrade of the year was removing vacuum system, removing mechanical AI/HSI, and adding two GI275's. GPSS works like a dream. Yay! I need help diagnosing error. GI 275 is showing TRK and not Heading during flight. I wanted to display the error area in the instruments. Please disregard the TRK FAIL portion on HSI (I was upgrading GTN 750 DB's at the time). I never see TRK FAIL during usage. My question is this...if you look carefully, you will see two yellow circles I imposed on the image...I am seeing white triangles with an ! in both of them. Anyone know how to see or troubleshoot? I've tried digging through the menus, downloading usage data to USB, doing searches, looking at youtubes, etc but to no avail. Thanks. Freddy

I think you are correct. I was thinking that either silicone or epoxy (more concerned as this as it would be hard to remove) would do the trick but would like to have a backup in case these do not work. I may just go ahead and order the printed type and give it a try. Freddy

Timing is a real drag! I'm assuming this will support 310HP STC for '97 which is a real drag because I just waited for 3 months for a new replacement for 280HP '97. Wanted the 310HP but the lead time was ridiculous along with the special pricing. Freddy

Excellent!

What material is used for printing these?

How does one identify klixon? I have a '97 Ovation...Also, what material do you use for printing? Thanks Freddy

Hi Everyone, I was hoping someone could recommend a brand/model booster for my daughter. The seat/shoulder belt does not fit well and her legs arent long enough to hang down (can trap her feet when the front seat is pushed back). It would probably be best to have her sit in a booster which will raise her up and place her feet on the seat along with providing a good fitting seat/belt. She is about 44 inches and 45 lbs. She LOVES LOVES LOVES flying. Has anything changed or has anyone learned anything they can pass along? Thank you. Freddy

Anyone have this switch or red cover available? The plastic switch tabs are broken on mine. Thank you Freddy

Anyone need to go to Top Gun in the next week or two? 4JS is in for annual and avionics and I would not mind taking a look while everything is open. I'd swap rides for when you need to go visit or do a pickup/dropoff in the future! Freddy

Curious to know how brave one must be to run a tank dry. I have the Monroys and some say blessing, other people say a curse. At some point, I will start using 4 seats for travel and will HAVE TO HAVE a really good handle on the fuel situation. BTW, my daughter is 45lbs. Up until now, it is just me and one other occupant. Pretty easy from a fuel perspective. I think for me, I'd like to tackle the problem from a flow/usage perspective. In other words, fuel up to a prescribed place such as the bottom of the neck, then fly using that tank for an hour or so and then filling up to that same level. At that point I'll have the gallons used as measured by fuel pump and also what Shadin says i've used and HOPEFULLY the correlation is close. If the accuracy is off, I have a flow meter calibration issue or if gross, a stuck vane. When I fly 4 seats for my intended 2 hour trips, I simply add the fuel that is needed to complete the trip. The only down side is that I will really never know what fuel was already in tanks so there is a risk that I could be 10-20 gallons over max take-off weight and maybe even landing weight at destination. Also, I just cannot resolve the fact that when one cannot see fuel immediately below the neck does not mean there isnt fuel in the lower wing. Anyone want to comment on how much there could be? I really dont think I have the nerve to empty a tank in flight (someone please describe in detail what you've done...maybe I just do not understand the risk enough to consider it low in my mind). To get this info, my idea would be to sump a tank dry by pumping the fuel to the other side or a container, then repeating and doing the same for the other side which would tell me fuel onboard (assuming the sumps are pretty low and would have to account for unusable?). Even if I find equipment to do this and it does not take forever, I still would have to test Shadin totalizer for accuracy. Thoughts? Freddy

Anyone in RHV? I would like to meet buddies and trade/exchange drop off's to those that need to goto Stockton Airport. Anyone?
-
Nobody really knows. I do know this...the area is underserved and within a couple of years, people will hopefully start to vote out those that are threatening to close down RHV. It is impossible to get good space at Palo Alto/San Carlos unless you want to be outside. Plus, the commute is all but impossible (another 12 or so miles from home). From what I gather it isnt a budget issue either! Any other thoughts?

Hi Everyone, First posting here. Wanting to say hello. Wondering who is local, etc. I wave at a few people that go back on Romeo Row at RHV. What are people up to this summer? I have met a few people at RHV (1 Bravo, 2-J's, 1 K passing through), etc. Wishing that things were opening up more quickly but enjoying my most recent freedoms (never thought I'd be saying that). I'm in Romeo 2, stop by and say hello if you can! Freddy

Let me know if you ever need someone to stretch legs out while you are away!

What was the red flag?

Very nice!

Good descriptions! Pretty much have settled on the red switch for 10 seconds of prime for cold starts then upon start turn on the black switch till idle is stable and then turn off.
