  1. I just got mine yesterday from AircraftSpruce. I ordered it 2 months ago to make sure I had it before Annual later this month :-)
  2. I can't think of a time when I haven't been asked to ident at first call to Memphis Departure.
  3. I do not have any extra cards. Is it possible to use a normal SDI card and just put it in the "carrier" (the thing that you grab to pull it out of the 430? ) I have the latest and greatest Garmin USB reader/writer but I don't know anything about these. This is the first one I've had and since I got the Avidyne 550 I've left the databases as they were. I'm working on my IR but to date the old database was just fine for backup or VFR purposes. I pulled them out while I was updating the 275s and labeled them Left and Right but I really didn't look at them.
  4. Thanks, Pete. I updated my GI-275s this morning with (I think) no issues. It took a total of 10 minutes to load all 5 databases, Terrain was 9:40 of that. Syncing the second 275 and downloading from the first one was astonishingly fast, less than 5 minutes in total to load everything. I said I think no issues because I still don't show that Terrain is correct but I believe it's because it couldn't lock on enough GPS satellites. From my position at the front of the hangar the Garmin GNS 430W was locked on 4 but that was it. I'm not sure how many the Avidyne IFD550 was locked on to. I plan on flying on Friday so we will see what shows up. The battery tender showed fully charged battery at the end of the update but I did pull a few CBs that come on when the Master is on, the 275s are wired in to the Master Buss. Exceedingly easy. Next month when I have to purchase the databases I'll get a OnePak that will include both the 275s and the 430W. I haven't touched the cards in the 430W since I bought the plane four years ago. I hope they still are Writable...
  5. If this is in here already, my apologies but I couldn't find it... I got my plane out of the Avionics shop last week, flew it home then to Florida and back without the databases. I downloaded the first time "free" database bundle and would like to install them from the USB. How long will this take? Should I load them all at once or should I load the "Terrain" separate? Will this be finished before my battery dies with the trickle charger connected? Thanks for your guidance. I'm absolutely in love with the 2 GI-275s already. They tie in great with the Avidyne IFD-550.
  6. I'm in the same boat as you are. I've had the plane for four years and I've never updated the GNS 430W. I'm currently having two GI-275s installed and will be purchasing the OnePak for the 275's and the 430W, I hope my 430 cards will update. I guess I'll know within the next week... Hopefully pick the plane up Friday.
  7. Wow! How disappointing but informative. I get my annuals done in Holly Springs where the other Jewell is located and would not hesitate to have that one look at something on m engine.
  8. You did GREAT! As a fellow IR Student, that would have been just one less thing on the landing checklist. No worries with Prop full forward, mixture rich... never mind.
  9. I'm hoping it all gets sorted out when they have put all the wires in the right sockets... They weren't from the original install of the Avidyne. So the current shop will be looking in to it. It's not a KFC it's a KAP 150 so I don't know if the solution would cross over...
  10. Getting close... I was hoping to have this completed by today (my home airport closes for probably 2 weeks at 0700 tomorrow). I think it will be done a day or two late :-(
  11. Did it kill the driver? He was going way too fast for my comfort but it don't look good.
  12. Good luck with your update it sounds great! My plane was broken in to in the early '90's and all the avionics were stolen from what I can tell in the log books. I bet there was an ADF in there and they just didn't replace it. I'm keeping my Nav 2 OBS and moving it up to one of the top blanks as a backup, it's tied to a GNS 430W but the second GI 275 will have both Nav radio feeds so we could have gone with just the 2 GI-275's. Since I have the plane in the shop during OSH, I was sure hoping that the Avidyne software would have been approved at AirVenture but no such luck. You can bet it will be updated ASAP after the install is done! I think we will both love our new panels.
  13. Dan, KOLV is a great airport with a nice runway. It will be closed for about a month starting the 17th of August 2022 for a repaving. The fuel is kind of expensive but there are a couple of options. Olive Branch Aviation (Used to be Metro Aviation) only has truck fuel with no self serve, the newish FBO Jet Center has self serve but I have no idea what the price is. There may or may not be courtesy car but I don't know. Lunch can be in Olive Branch or Memphis with my favorite BBQ at The Commissary which is close(ish) in Germantown and another location in Collierville.
  14. Mark, you may have the wrong post. You may be replying to someone other than me, but I don't have a digital tach and have never had one.
  15. I've got a Serious/XM radio that I've yet to install for that. I'm not really interested in the monthly cost of S/XM weather but I definitely enjoy music on my long XC's.
  16. I've actually heard both ways with the 275s, one camp says you have to have a backup the other says not necessary. One of them is obviously wrong but I've never flown with anything like a panel so I'm unfamiliar with what the 275 is going to show. I elected to keep the TC so that if I ever do lose the 275 or heaven forbid both of them (I've heard one story where a guy actually did lose the AHARS that drives them) I will still know when I'm wings level. Even though I have the 550 AND ForeFlight as redundant systems.
  17. Ease of mind.
  18. Not my fault! I try to wear them out...
  19. The radio stack kind of surprised me... but I wasn't receiving weather nor traffic on my Avidyne IFD 550 from the Lynx 9000 so I'm sure they are checking cabling. The main thing is removing the Vacuum system and four instruments being replaced with 2 GI 275s. I'm keeping the turn coordinator and airspeed as is. I hope with them taking the Autopilot out they can trouble shoot why NAV and APP weren't working. Heading and Altitude hold were working great. The avionics stack has Avidyne Audio panel and IFD 550 as well as the Lynx 9000 at the bottome of that stack is a KAP 150 and to the right is a Garmin GNS 430W. I will keep the CDI and move it up into one of the top blanks.
  20. The cases are only 6 quarts so it makes sense to buy 2 cases for the free shipping.
  21. Another one for AviationOutlet... now the interesting thing that you didn't ask is; Where can I get an oil filter?
  22. It depends on your mission. I went from a 1/4 share in a 180C to a Mooney J, I was right at 300 hours. The J is perfect for me. I've on Basic Med so I don't care that my J wont fly in the FL's, I can't. My mission is my wife and a German Shepherd to either the Panhandle of Florida (for family) or the middle of North Carolina (for Grandkids) from Memphis. The only thing I've found more difficult in the Mooney than the Piper is building time. I just get there too fast... I'm currently working on my IR and the J is perfect for this as well. This is my last airplane I will ever own, that's something else for you to think about, and why my decision was much easier. I forgot.... Welcome.
  23. I'm in the just send a note camp. BUT BE SURE TO INCLUDE THESE PICTURES with it. See where it goes from there. Maybe at least a partial refund but you never know.
  24. That was done two years ago during my first avionics upgrade. !
  25. My 1985 J's interior plastics have yellowed. I don't know if former owners smoked or if this is a natural process for these plastics, but... Is there a cleaner that will take the yellow out and return them to tan(ish) without just replacing them. I have one piece that was lost and replaced by an avionics shop a couple of years ago but my wife says we can't afford to replace the interior. I'm kidding, I don't think we can replace them at this time either. The plane's interior is brown cloth and the interior doesn't look terrible but anywhere it shows what it used to look like and what it looks like now is ... remarkable. Have any of you found anything that applied with liberal amounts of elbow grease brings them closer to original?
